一、综述本课题国内外研究动态，说明选题的依据和意义：
With the integration of China and the world，more and more foreigner want to know much more about China and come to here. In the process of cross-cultural communication, English has become the most convenient communication tools. Under the circumstances, the use of public signs translation is not only represent the opening degree of a city, but also is an examination about the internationalization degree. Therefore, the translation of public signs is becoming necessary.
Since the 1990s, the translation of public signs has drawn domestic scho lars’attention. Entering21s t century, much more researchers pay attention to the translation of public signs.
Beijing Foreign Studies University set up public signs translation research center in 2002 and a project about the public signs translation research. In a word, the translation of public signs has become the most attractive topic of Chinese experts, researchers and the whole society.
According to their usages and the places they appear, public signs can be divides into the following types: signs in public places, traffic signs, road signs, visiting signs and names and services of institutions and shops.
Clive Granger, the owner of 2003 Nobel Prize scholarship in economics, attended Nobel Laureates Beijing Forum 2003. His keynote, Economic Forecasting and the Beijing Olympics, had talked about service in tourism, prices of tickets. When he got to the setting up and usage of Beijing p ublic signs, he said” Foreigners always do not understand the meaning of public signs, which makes them nervous.”
Through the surveys, we can find many issues about the translation of public signs, including mistranslation or inaccurate translation, chinglish machinery translation, different names of same place and pragmatic misconduct mainly.
With the development of the globalization, more and more foreign companies come to China. Besides, the quantity of people who are attracted by Chinese culture is grow ing quickly. So the study of public translation is necessary for our country’s development and has a positive effect on using public signs properly. It is very important for the internationalization of our cities. The thesis consists of 4 chapters.
二、研究的基本内容，拟解决的主要问题：
The thesis consists of 4 chapters.
Chapter I introduces the definition of public signs. Some core journals could provide searching access for us to find something useful, including Chinese Translators Journal, Shanghai Journal Of Translators, Chinese Science & Technology Translators Journal and Shanghai Journal of Translators for Science and Technology. According to information retrieval from those core journals,
public signs are used frequently and widely. Then they become a new fashion. Yang Tonghong, a famous scholar in public signs translation, supposes that the translated name has some different ideas, including public signs, labels, reveals language, warning sticker inferential markers and so on. Public signs are special styles which are common in public places. The contents of the signs are some concise and easy to understand pictures, several words or groups of words and pictures. The purpose of them is drawing the attention of people and getting information from them.
Chapter 2 is an analysis of language characteristics and translation methods of public signs. Lu Hefa points out that four application functions are indicative, suggestive gesture, restrictive and mandatory. Concise，consistent，conspicuous，conventional and convenient are five language characteristics of public signs, supposed by Ding Hengqi. His view about the way of public signs trans lation is the “Adapt—Borrow—Create”.
Chapter 3 is an analysis of translation principles of public signs translation. J. L. Austin comes up with the theory of doing things with words. Chen Jianhua puts forward the theory of accuracy, standard and concise. Wang Yinquan and Chen Xinren are supporters of the theory of established by usage.
Chapter 4 is an analysis of translation errors in public signs translation. Although experts have called for more attention on public signs translation, the present situation is far from being satisfactory. This chapter will introduce some common errors The last part is the conclusion.
三、研究步骤、方法及措施：
First step: look for public signs from streets, buildings and
tourist attractions and note them down.
Second step: take a questionnaire survey about the acceptability of signs. Then analyze the differences and similarities about those signs.
Last step: sum up some regularities of the genre.
