The Bard*: A Brief Biography
• William Shakespeare* seems to have been born April 23, 1564 • He died April 23, 1616 • What happened in between those dates? • The quote guarding Shakespeare‟s tomb:
– “Good friend for Jesvs sake forebeare, To digge the dvst enclosed here. Bleste be the man that spares these stones, And cvrst be he that moves my bones.”

The Dash Years
• Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon to John and Mary (Arden) Shakespeare. • John was an important man in town; he held the rank of what we would now call the mayor and he was a successful merchant. • William had seven siblings. • In 1582, 18-year-old William married 26-yearold Anne Hathaway. Five months later, their daughter Susanna was born. • Twins Hamnet and Judith followed in 1585.

• We do not have much information about the Elizabethan theater … no blogs, no websites, no digital photographs … it is only through occasional sketches and tidbits of information that we piece together what the theater was like. • For example, a Swiss traveler wrote in 1599 about having seen Julius Caesar at the Globe theater during his trip to England, so we have a way to establish a date for it
