4. Two students are interviewing a famous doctor. They ask about her interests. The doctor likes reading and dancing but the students do not.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” is a popular saying in English. There is much truth to this old saying. It means that in order to keep ourselves in good health, we must take sufficient recreation. Hobbies can provide us with interest, enjoyment, friendship, knowledge, and recreation.

A hobby is a leisure-time interest or activity taken up primarily for pleasure. It is the oasis in a desert of routine for people who are engaged in working day after day. A hobby can be anything a person likes to do in his spare time. Everyone may have his own favorite hobby. Hobbyists swim, ski, skate play all kinds of ball games, grow flowers, climb mountains, and hunt animals. Hobbyists also draw pictures, play music, watch movies, and make collections.

Hobbies can be classified into two categories: mental hobbies and physical hobbies. The former mainly benefits one’s mental quality and the latter helps improve one’s physical health. Hobbies like reading, painting, chess, and music belong to the first group and hobbies that involve one’s physical activities such as gardening, traveling, and taking part in sports belong to the second group.
A hobby can be something from which we learn more about ourselves or about the world. It may introduce s to friends who share our enthusiasm or from whom we can also learn. It helps both manual and mental workers to relax after periods of hard work and provides a balance between work and play. It can help build or restore one’s mental and physical health.
2. One of your classmates works very hard and has no hobbies. You offer some advice about finding a hobby but your classmate finds it hard to follow.
3. Three friends are talking about the best way to relax. The first likes keeping pets. The second likes seeing movies. The third likes collecting stamps and going on the internet.
