Personalized Medicine Coalition Applauds New Health Care Reform Law

A Victory for Personalized Medicine and Patients

Washington, D.C. (March 24, 2010) – The Personalized Medicine Coalition (PMC) praised the landmark health care reform legislation signed into law this week, noting that it represents the first time the principles of personalized medicine were formally voted on and passed by both houses of Congress and signed into law by a president. Also significant is t he bill’s alignment of personalized medicine with the conduct and use of comparative effectiveness research (CER).

"PMC has been working over the past year in support of policy solutions that listen to the science and advance the interest of patients by incorporating personalized medicine into comparative effectivene ss research,” said Amy Miller, policy d irector of the Personalized Medicine Coalition. “This new legislation is a major step forward as it ensures that future comparative effectiveness research will be personalized to benefit patients."

The new health care reform bill enacted into law (H.R. 3590) incorporates the tenets of

personalized medicine throughout the structure of its CER provisions. Therefore, health care

reform will:

Include primary research on molecularly-informed trials in the research agenda;

Ensure research recognizes potential differences, including genetic and molecular sub-

typing;

Improve the quality of the science generated by CER, incorporating new information and technological innovations into its studies, reviewing and updating evidence as

necessary, and outlining what future research will be necessary to address perceived

gaps;

Incorporate research on patient preferences in the scope of work, including patient

quality of life and physician choice; and

Create an independent research methods committee that includes experts in molecular diagnostics. "With the passage of this watershed bill, policymakers can now turn their attention to the issues surrounding medical innovation, improved patient care, and reduced systemic costs,” said Edward Abrahams, president of the Personalized Medicine Co alition. “P ersonalized medicine and targeted therapeutics will help us get there.”
