Far From the Madding Crowed is a novel that makes Hardy famous. It is a symbol that Hardy’s early novels reach a climax in mind and arts. Most importantly, Hardy created his works as a regional writer all his life(Liu Maosheng.148:36-38). In this novel, there are four main characters: Gabriel Oak, Boldwood, Troy, and Bathsheba. The three men hold three completely different attitudes to love.

1. Gabriel Oak: to love is to make the person you love happy.

Gabriel, accompanying her for all her life, is traditional, versatile and upright and has a good character. To a degree, all of Gabriel’s good qualities can be summarized in his serene acceptance of his limitations, as well as of his talents (R. Nelson Elizabeth, 119:15-16). His devotion to Bathsheba is marked by a patient acceptance, both of her faults and her process to mature.

Though he loved Bathsheba deeply all the time, he never entangled her after her refusal to his proposal. Rebuffed, he just made up his mind to work on his enterprise—a very small farm. Unfortunately, he bankrupted finally. Since then, he became an employee in Bathsheba’s farm. He could see her every day, but he never showed his love to her again. What he did was to help her run the farm silently.

He loved her deeply, but he never lost his dignity and principles. He respected himself as a man and as an individual. As a female, Bathsheba was vain and was eager to be praised by others. However, Gabriel never flattered her to gain her heart. No matter when and where he met Bathsheba, he was to be himself. Once upon a time, hearing some rumors, Bathsheba asked him for some details. He told her the truth. At that time, Bathsheba asked him to calm down the rumor, but he refused her request, which made her very angry and said that he must leave the farm before the weekend. Gabriel left. Unluckily, the lambs in Bathsheba’s farm were sick and there were no skilled person to cure them except Gabriel.
