First stage started after the First World War and ended before the Second World War. Jazz originated in the southern America. It's a product combined black African music and European music, which is a component of black culture.
The representative is Elvis. And in this period, the British band Beatles influenced American rock music profoundly.

In the third phase that is after the 1970s, the type of pop music is more diverse. The most famous super star is Michael Jackson. He combined music and dance so perfectly that pushed pop music to the peak. New generation such as Backstreet Boys and Beyonce then Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber today owned million of fans all over the world. They have large influence and become cultural icons.

In the mid-18th century, pop music was born under the influence of the industrial revolution in Europe, then it spread to North America quickly and lifted the pop music current in Europe and the United States for two hundred years.
Pop music is close to our life, easy to understand and sing aloud, so it is widely circulated quickly.

In China, pop music originated in some culture-prosperous and open-minded places such as Shanghai. And it developed fast after the Reform and Opening-up. During this period, lyric song was the mainstream which got popular appreciation.
In the 1990s, the mainland pop music was flourishing with youth and love theme. Campus folk was popular such as My Deskmate by Laolang. And rock became a fashion style effected by DouWei, CuiJian and so on.

Then at the beginning of the 21st century, the popularity of television, computers and phones made a new generation pop stars. Civilian singers stood out. Li Yuchun and XuSong are the representative figures.
