TBL Lesson Plan

Who Will Be the Survivor?

Instructor: Dory

Course/Level: Speaking/intermediate

Description of students:

1.16 adult students.

2.Immigrants

Objectives:

1.Ss gain confidence with speaking.

2.Ss can collaborate to complete an assigned task.

3.Ss practice how to negotiate with others by offering opinions or support, making

suggestion or expressing different points of view.

Materials: handout

Procedures:

1. T divides Ss into group of 4 evenly. They can cooperate with the ones they like.

(5 minutes)

2. Ss make an items-to-bring list within group. (15 minutes)

3. Each group presents the list and explains the reasons orally. (20 minutes)

4. T gives feedback to Ss’ presentation. (5 minutes)

5. Ss are required to write an e-mail as the homework. (5 minutes)

Pre-task:

1.T teaches Ss how to finish the task;

2.T gives clear instructions;

3.T teaches vocabularies if necessary

Task:

1.T divides Ss into group of 4. Ss can cooperate with the people they like.

2.Each group will be given 15 minutes to make the items-to-bring list and

explain the reasons.

3.Each group is required to prepare for an oral report including:

--What are the items they need to bring to the island?

--Why did they choose these items?

4. T walks around the classroom and takes notes on the common sentences they

use or the errors they make.

Planning:

Each group prepares for an oral report including the following issues:

1.Items they want to bring to the island.

2.Reasons why they need these items.

Report:

Each group has one student to present the report orally.

Analysis:

T will analyze the phrases or sentences of how to negotiate with others by

--offering opinions or support (I think/I don’t think…We can/could…)

--making suggestions (Why don’t we…? Why not…? We’d better…We’d better not…)

--expressing different points of view (I don’t think…)

Practice:

Ss are required to write an e-mail following the instruction below as the homework.

Instructions: Now you have made up your decision to take part in the Reality TV show and you want to write an e-mail to one of your team member to suggest what to bring to the island. You can refer to the negotiation strategies to make your suggestion more convincible.

Learner Feedback:

T gives feedback to Ss’ presentation focusing on the use of negotiation in class.
