Austen --- Neoclassicism
• literary period. Her works show clearly her firm belief in the predominance of reason over passion, the Austen’s themes, structure and style best fit the Neoclassical sense of responsibility, good manners and clear judgment over the romantic tendencies of emotion and individuality. • Much of Austen’s fiction is in direct response to the excesses of popular literature of her day --sentimentalism (感情主义), melodrama(戏剧性事件) and the gothic(哥特式) novel.

First published in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has consistently been Jane Austen‘s most popular novel. It portrays life in the genteel(上流社会 的) rural society of the day, and tells of the initial misunderstandings and later mutual enlightenment between Elizabeth Bennet (whose liveliness and quick wit have often attracted readers) and the haughty Darcy. The title Pride and Prejudice refers (among other things) to the ways in which Elizabeth and Darcy first view each other. The original version of the novel was written in 1796-1797 under the title First Impressions, and was probably in the form of an exchange of letters.
Style of Jane Austen
Her fictional world: She called her work “small square two inches of ivory”. In her little world there are country gentlem en and ladies together with snobs, bores and social “clim bers”, “three or four fam ilies in a village”. She wrote about parish life with calls, walks, picnics, conversations, parties, balls, m arriages (no great events: Napoleonic war and Industrial Revolution left no trace).
