Korla’s Public Signs

Abstract

The tourism development leave of Xinjiang Bayin'gholin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture is later and backward than the developed area.In recent years,the tourism of Bayin'gholin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture developed very fast,it made gratifying achievements and positive effect.The tourism development also made some economic benefits.Tourists from all over the world come to Korla and neighboring areas.Korla is a city as"pear city”,and also“the heart of central Bayin'gholin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture”,for its famous scenic areas such as Ancient City of Loulan,Bosten Lake,Bayanbulak Grassland,Lop Nur,Takla Makan Desert and Iron Gate Pass and so on.Public sign,as a business card of the city,and an important window for foreigners to know China,has directing,prompting,restricting and compelling functions. However,the recent translation of Korla and neighboring areas tourism literature is relatively rare and unsatisfying.This paper notices that the common problems about Korla public signs.

来，巴州旅游业发展势头强劲，取得了可喜可贺的成绩，并产生了良好的社会经济效应，对巴州地区的经济影响日益增大。有着``梨城”之称,被誉为“巴音郭楞蒙古自治州心脏”的库尔勒市以及其周边地区,因其有着楼兰古城，博斯腾湖，巴音布鲁克草原，罗布人村寨，塔克拉玛干沙漠和铁门关等著名旅游景区而著名。公示语,作为城市的一张名片,具有指示性、提示性、限制性、强制性等功能,是外国友人了解中国的重要窗口。对于不懂中文的外国游客来说,公示语的英译质量至关重要,然而,库尔勒及周围的旅游景区,公示语的译文却不那么令人满意。

Common Problem of the Linguistic Translation

of Korla’s Public Signs

The fast development of the global economy has brought along the tourism globalization. More and more people come out of their own countries and travel around the world. Tourism not only broadens their horizon,but also makes them know more about each other, which is beneficial to the development of the world peace.Korla,(Kurla or Kuerle)is a mid-sized city in central Xinjiang,and is,administratively,a county-level city and the seat of the Bayin'gholin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture,which is larger than Great Britain and is the largest Chinese prefecture.

With its long and rich history and the specific physical features,Korla is among the first group of National Excellent Tourist Destinations boasting many places worth seeing, such as Ancient City of Loulan,Bosten Lake,Bayanbulak Grassland,Lop Nur,Takla Makan Desert,Iron Gate Pass and Yadan Spectacle.

The phrase,“public signs”is an English equivalent to the Chinese“公示语”which is also called“标示语”,“标识语”and“标志语”.(Fang,2003)“Public signs refer to the signs that are shown publicly,offering a kind of warning,direction,notification and other closely related literal or graphical information.”(Dai,2005)Public signs are open to the public,official notice,reminder,display,warning,mark and relevant words or graphical information that is related to daily life,production,lives,ecology and means of livelihood.

With the development of Korla’s tourism,people can see public signs everywhere.In this thesis,the author makes an attempt to analyze common problem of the C-E translation of public signs,with Scenic Area in Korla as a case study,hoping to make some contributions to the translation of public signs.

1.Spelling and Grammatical Mistakes

Spelling mistakes are the most common and obvious problems in translation of public sign in Scenic Area of Korla.And they would be considered as the evidence of poor proficiency of the translator and then ruin the image of the language environment.Though,
