省译法定义
Omissi on
(省译法)
I. Defin iti on
By omission we mean we properly omit some words or expressions in order to
make the translated version brief, concise, clear. Proper omission in English-Chinese tran slati on often in volves the omitt ing of some words (such as prepositi ons, articles, certa in pronouns, conj un cti ons, etc.) that are in dispe nsable in the SL text but not in the TL text.
II. Motivatio n
Omissi on is based on the differe nces betwee n En glish and Chin ese. For example,
Chinese has no articles or infinitive markers. And pronouns, conjunctions, and prepositi ons are not used as freque ntly as those of En glish. So whe n we tran slate
En glish sentences with articles and infin itive markers in to Chin ese, we ofte n omit
them.
III. Prin ciples
Omissi on does not go aga in st 'faithfu In ess'. It does not mean subtract ing meanings
from the original work.
Omissi on should be aimed at smooth ness and con cise ness or succi nctn ess.
What is omitted may n ot be n ecessarily confined to certa in parts of speech. Any
parts of speech may be liable to be omitted accord ing to the con text and the tran slator's tran slati on tech niq ues.
