感恩节(Thanksgiving Day)
in1620,aboatfilledwithmorethanonehundredpeoplesailedacrosstheatlantic oceantosettleinthenewworld(新大陆).thisreligiousgrouphadbeguntoquestionthebeliefsofthechurchofengland andtheywantedtoseparatefromit.thepilgrimssettledinwhatisnowthestateof massachusetts.theirfirstwinterinthenewworldwasdifficult.theyhadarrivedt oolatetogrowmanycrops,andwithoutfreshfood,halfthecolonydiedfromdise ase.thefollowingspringtheiroquoisindians(美国纽约州东北部易洛魁族印第安人)taughtthemhowtogrowcorn,anewfoodforthecolonists.theyshowedthem othercropstogrowintheunfamiliarsoilandhowtohuntandfish. intheautumnof1621,bountifulcropsofcorn,barley(大麦),beansandpumpkinswereharvested.thecolonistshadmuchtobethankfulf or,soafeastwasplanned.theyinvitedthelocalindianchiefand90indians.theindi ansbroughtdeertoroastwiththeturkeysandotherwildgameofferedbythecolo nists.thecolonistshadlearnedhowtocookcranberriesanddifferentkindsofcor nandsquashdishesfromtheindians.tothisfirstthanksgiving,theindianshadeve nbroughtpopcorn.
infollowingyears,manyoftheoriginalcolonistscelebratedtheautumnharvest withafeastofthanks. aftertheunitedstatesbecameanindependentcountry,congressrecommende
doneyearlydayofthanksgivingforthewholenationtocelebrate.georgewashin gtonsuggestedthedatenovember26asthanksgivingday.thenin1863,attheen dofalongandbloodycivilwar,abrahamlincolnaskedallamericanstosetasidethe lastthursdayinnovemberasadayofthanksgiving. thanksgivingfallsonthefourththursdayofnovember,adifferentdateeveryyear. thepresidentmustproclaimthatdateastheofficialcelebration. thanksgivingisatimefortraditionandsharing.eveniftheylivefaraway,familyme mbersgatherforareunionatthehouseofanolderrelative.allgivethankstogethe rforthegoodthingsthattheyhave.

turkey,corn,pumpkinsandcranberrysauce(酸果曼沙司)aresymbolswhichrepresentthefirstthanksgiving.nowallofthesesymbolsa redrawnonholidaydecorationsandgreetingcards.theuseofcornmeantthesur vivalofthecolonies.indiancornasatableordoordecorationrepresentstheharv estandthefallseason.

usedthefruittotreatinfections.theyusedthejuicetodyetheirrugsandblankets. theytaughtthecolonistshowtocooktheberrieswithsweetener(甜味佐料)andwatertomakeasauce.theindianscalleditibimiwhichmeansbitterberry. whenthecolonistssawit,theynameditcrane-berrybecausetheflowersofthebe rrybentthestalkover,anditresembledthelong-neckedbirdcalledacrane.thebe rriesarestillgrowninnewengland.
in1988,athanksgivingceremonyofadifferentkindtookplaceatthecathedralofs t.johnthedivine.morethanfourthousandpeoplegatheredonthanksgivingnigh t.amongthemwerenativeamericansrepresentingtribesfromalloverthecount ryanddescendantsofpeoplewhoseancestorshadmigratedtothenewworld. theceremonywasapublicacknowledgmentoftheindians'roleinthefirstthanks giving350yearsago.untilrecentlymostschoolchildrenbelievedthatthepilgrim scookedtheentirethanksgivingfeast,andofferedittotheindians.infact,thefeas twasplannedtothanktheindiansforteachingthemhowtocookthosefoods.wit houttheindians,thefirstsettlerswouldnothavesurvived.
