War of the Currents
• During the late 1880s Edison began a negative media campaign to discredit the alternating current system of electricity being developed by Westinghouse and Tesla.
• Early on,Tesla began to demonstrate an extraordinary imagination.
• “In my boyhood I suffered from a pecullar affllction due to the appearance of images often accompanied by strong flashes of light.I was quiet unable to distinguish whether what I saw was tanglble or not.To give an example,I was fascinated by a description of Niagara and I pictured in my imagination a big wheel run by the falls.”
Early Life
• His father,Mllutin,was an Orthdox prlest who expected his son to follow him in the clergy.
• His mother descended from one of the oldest Serblan families in the country.She invended and constructed all kinds of tools and devices.
In 1877,Tesla travelled to Graz,Austria to begin his college education.Here he quickly became obsessed with the science of electricity. He remarked to my professor that the design of generators and motors could be greatly improved by using currents that alternated.But his professor embarrassed Tesla,greatly.
The New Land
• Tesla arrived in New York on June 6th,1884.
• In his pocket he carried a letter of recommendation from Charles Batchelor,one of the Edison's associates in Europe.

• With help from a group of investors,he began to assemble a protype of the motor he had envisioned seven years earller.
• It became known as The War of the Currents.
• In The Columbian Exposltion in Chicago,Tesla put on remarkable demonstrations.The Chicago exposition left an indelible impression on the Ameriacan imagination.
• “My dear Edison,I know two great men and you are one of them.The other is this young man.”
• Edison hired Tesla to imrprove the performance of his DC generators.Tesla said he was promised $50000 if he was successful.
• At the age of 17,while preparing for the seminary,Tesla contracted cholera and a brush with death changed his life forever.
