1. The author’s mother is a very strong and capable woman. Being a single black mother with several kids and without a regular job, she r eceives life from the government. But she doesn’t lose her hopes. Instead, she is always optimistic in facing difficulties in life and teaches the kids to face life courageously. When there is no money to pay the rent and the family is evicted by the landlord, she tries to persuade the landlord to let them stay on credit: when her children need money to buy medicine, she spends the rent money on it. Then she works in a white family, doing all sorts of household chores and earning little money to cover the family’s daily expenses. Yet she pays great attention to the education of the children and hopes that they will have a better life when they
grow up.
2. The answers may vary, depending on different understanding of mother’s love. Mostly we can say that it is selfless devotion, care and concern, and spiritual guidance.

They would like to bring their expertise to help, but were faced with suspicion, distain, and frustration. Because of the long separation of 300 years, because of the different environments in which they grow up, they find it difficult to embrace their homeland.

1. He was a shy, kind and generous person. As a writer, he didn’t see that anyone who had a gift in writing should be able to teach. Yet, as a teacher, he was respected by his students. He felt that criticism was an act of empathy, and encouraged his students to achieve their own success. He was kind and generous in helping his students and friends to overcome difficulties.
