Summary A New York City hobo（流浪汉） named Soapy, who sets out to get arrested so he can avoid sleeping in the cold winter as a guest of the city jail. Despite efforts at petty theft（小偷小摸）, vandalism（破坏行为）, disorderly conduct（扰乱治安 行为）, and “mashing” with a young prostitute（妓 女）, Soapy fails to draw the attention of the police. Disconsolately（愁闷地）, he pauses in front of a church, where an anthem inspires him to clean up his life — and is ironically（讽刺地） charged for loitering（流浪罪） and sentenced to three months in prison.
