It is good to live in Hangzhou, to eat in Guangzhou, and to die in Liuzhou.(意合美,译文无审美价值,无基本的“有效性”及“合适性”)
There are three best choices in China-living in Hangzhou, eating in Guangzhou and buying a wooden coffin in Liuzhou.(p. 23)
●As a youngster I was effervescent, outgoing, and I talked too much. I had a talent for saying
the wrong things at the wrong time. I tortured myself because of the foolish things I had said.

(23-24)
●The dress set off to perfection the seventeen-inch waist, the smallest in three counties, and
tightly fitting basque showed breasts well matured for her sixteen years.(Gone with the Wind)

(28)
●Change is part of life and the making of character, hon. When things happen that you do not
like, you have two choices: You get bitter or better.

(31)
●Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and
supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

(31-32) Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, of the craving for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

(32)
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

(32)Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being‟s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what‟s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

(32)
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with sorrow of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 30, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.

(32)
●During the war he was sent on dangerous secret missions abroad. Very exciting! He was a
sort of James Bond.

(34)
●To many parents, the three Gs---gays, guys and gangs---have replaced the three Rs as
benchmarks of school life.

(36)
●More recently he introduced himself into the debate on welfare reform by insisting that
unwed motherhood, not joblessness, was the problem.

(37-38)●The rocks presented a high impenetrable wall, over which the torrent came tumbling in a
sheet of feathery foam, and fell into a broad, deep basin, black from the shadows of the surrounding forest.

(42)●Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the
end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being.

(43)
●(物称)The horrible sense of his view of her so deadened her that she staggered.

The effectiveness of the electronic computer lies in its great speed and accuracy in calculation. (The effectiveness of the electronic computer is achieved because it has great speed and accuracy in calculation.)
Even the dissolution in water cannot enable common salt to change its chemical properties.
(Even though we dissolve it in water, we cannot enable common salt to change its chemical properties.)
●Illness brought her a strange restlessness and made her all the more eager to cling to life and
squeeze from it the last drop of happiness. It made her envy health, but it also made sentimental over a leaf that the wind had blow into her room.

(46)
●It begins when a feeling of stillness creeps into my consciousness. Everything has suddenly
gone quiet. Birds do not chirp. Leaves do not rustle. Insects do not sing.

●For the rest, after the first six months, she grew quickly, and could soon walk and talk. She
was a real beauty, with the Earnshaws‟ handsome dark eyes, but the Linton‟s fair skin, and small features with blonde, curly hair. She was sensitive and affectionate. She did not look a great deal like her mother, as she could be sweet and gentle; her anger was never furious, and her love was deep and tender.

(69)●If any one would make me the greatest king that ever lived, with palaces and gardens and fine
dinners, and wines and coaches, and beautiful clothes, and hundreds of servants, on condition that I should not read books, I would not be a king. I would rather be a poor man in garret with plenty of books than a king who did not love reading.

●We can nowhere find a better type of a perfectly free creature than in the common house fly.
Not free only, but brave. There is no courtesy in him; he does not care whether it is king or clown whom he tastes; and in every step of his swift, mechanical march, and in every pause of his resolute observation, there is one and the same expression of perfect egotism, perfect independence and self-confidence, and conviction of the world‟s having been made for flies.
Strike at him with your hand; and to him, the aspect of the matter is, what to you it would be, if an acre of red clay, ten feet thick, tore itself up from the ground and came crashing down with an aim. He steps out of the way of your hand, and alights on the back of it. You cannot terrify him, nor govern him, nor persuade him, nor convince him.
He has his won positive opinion on all matters; not an unwise one, usually, for his own ends;
and will ask no advice of yours. He has no work to do---no tyrannical insects to obey. The earthworm has his digging; the bee her gathering and building; the spider her cunning network; the ant her treasury and accounts. All these are comparative slaves, or people of business. But your fly, free in the air, free in the chamber---a black incarnation of caprice---wondering, investigating, flitting, flirting, feasting at his will, with rich variety of choice in feast, from the heaped sweets in the grocer‟s window to chose of the butcher‟s back yard---what freedom is like this? (John Ruskin: The Freedom of the Fly)

1.I lack confidence since childhood, which was the root of the problem. I would feel
embarrassed while receiving the slightest praise. I found it hard to say “no”. I even dared not to ask for one more cent from my parent. Besides, this lack of confidence also influenced my love for the piano.
2.At the root of it is my diffidence by which I have been enslaved since childhood. It embarrasses me at the mildest flattery, crushes me utmost efforts to say “no”, and prevents me from asking my parent for one cent more than necessary. Among other things, diffidence has wormed its way into my love of the piano.(140)
A young lady home from school was explaining. “Take an egg,”she said, “and make a
perforation in the base and a corresponding one in the apex. Then apply the lips to the aperture, and by forcibly inhaling the breath the shell is entirely discharged of its contents.”
And old lady, who was listening exclaimed, “It beats all how folks do things nowadays.
When I was a gal they made a hole in each end a nd sucked.”

On Big Words:
It looks so learned and knowing that it calls attention to the absurdity like a college cap on a donkey‟s ear.
We do not make a thing more impressive by clothing it in grand words any more than we crack a nut more neatly by using a sledgehammer. We only distract attention from the thought to the clothes it wears. If we are wise our wisdom will gain from the simplicity of our speech, and if we are foolish our folly will only shout the louder through big words.

●The first fall of snow is not only an event but is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of
world and make up to find yourself in another quite deferent, and if this is not enchantment, then where is it to be found? The very stealth, the eerie quietness of the thing makes it more magical. If all the snow fell at once in one shattering crash, awakening us in the middle of the night, the event would be robbed of its wonder. But it flutters down, soundless, hour after hour while we are sleep. Outside the closed curtains of the bedroom a vast transformation scene is taking place, just as if a myriad of elves and brownies were at work, and we turn and yawn and stretch and know nothing about it. And then what an extraordinary change it is! It is as if the house you are in had been dropped down in another continent. Even the inside, which has not been touched, seems different, every room appearing smaller and cozier, just as if some power were trying to turn it into a woodcutter‟s hut or a snug log cabin.

What has become of a woman at forty? The answer comes from the mirror, which shows up vaguely discernible wrinkle on the formerly smooth forehead and the thick black hair with its gloss gone. A touch of frustration and helplessness comes over me as I realize how time flies. Before I have sufficiently admired the scenery and enjoyed the beauties of life, it‟s already autumn. However, a second thought brings me relieved calm.(170)

Others travel leisurely like tourists. They would take time off now and then for a look at blooming flowers or fallen petals. They would stop to admire clouds gathering and dispersing.

She is very charming when singing “Hand in Hand” in a duet with her lifelong companion. White-haired and wrinkled, she may be one of our grannies, a perfect image of kindness as she is often described. The furrows ploughed by time deny replenishment with cosmetics, for they are fertile soil radiating the fragrance of history.(171)

Day in and day out my room is cleaned with meticulous care to keep it always dust-free, so that it greets me with a pleasant look whenever I return. No matter how far into the night, there is always a light at that window shining through darkness like a beacon to the one bound for home late. The sight of it, even in the distance, brings warmth from the window all the way to the heart.(172)

Thus the gathering dark often finds me hastening home in a hurrying crowd. Whether it rains or snows, windy or foggy, it is the longing to be home that quickens my steps. To be home means to end a day‟s fatigue and enjoy myself in a world of my own. With a nice cup of tea and a burning sandalwood incense by my side, I can either resume my suspended reading, or listen leisurely to a soft melody and let myself be carried away to a fairyland… All the urban noises and disturbances are shut out, thrown to the winds and rain, for I am saf4e at home.(172)

Months later, rings appeared glistening on their fingers but chatting was gradually replaced by reading, one with a book the other a newspaper.(173)

It may be that I‟m venting some pen-up feelings long denied expression, or trying to compose a little poem not yet presentable for the time being, or attempting to sketch out something visualized from my childhood memories which glows in my mind like a rainbow. When I am in such a mood, please leave me alone and let me write as the pen dictates me.(173)
