第四单元中译英

电影艺术专家说，动画艺术的发展要归功于沃尔特·迪士尼。迪士尼的画家们努力将生命注入图画。也就是说，他们必须感受卡通生物的全部情感：喜、哀、怒、惧。画家们对着镜子看自己表达各种情感：微笑、流泪、脸红、睁大眼睛、然后把那些表情画到每一个卡通生物的脸上。

Movie experts say Walt Disney was responsible for the development of the art of animation. Disney’s artists tried to put life into ever drawing. That meant they had to feel all the emotions of the cartoon creatures: happiness, sadness, anger, fear. The artists looked at themselves in a mirror and expressed each emotion: a smile, tears, a red face , wide-opened eyes. Then they drew that look on the face of each cartoon creature.

Disney’s art of animation reached its highest point in 1940 with the movie Pinocchio. The story is about a wooden toy that comes to life as a little boy. Disney’s artists drew two-and-a-half-million pictures to make Pinocchio. The artists drew flat pictures. Yet they created a look of space

and solid objects. Pinocchio was an imaginary world, get it looked very real.

In the 20th century, the American Dream had its challenges. The Depression caused widespread hardship during the Twenties and Thirties, and was almost a reverse of the dream for those directly affected. Racial instability did not disappear, and in some parts of the country racial violence was almost commonplace.

Since the end of World War II, young Amerasian families have sought to live in relative comfort and stability in the suburbs that were built up around major cities. This led to the rise of the relatively conservative 1950s, when many pursued the "perfect family" as a part or consequence of the American Dream. This period was shattered by a new generation of young people who embraced the hippie values of the 1960s, denying traditional values such as the American Dream. Though the drive for it waned during those years, the Dream itself has never fully died out. 20世纪，美国梦遇到了挑战。大萧条使得二、三十年代的生活到处都很艰难，对那些直接受到影响的人们来说，现实与美国梦几乎正好相反。种族间的不安依然存在，在国内的一些地方，种族暴力时有发生。

Many interns do not earn money at their summer jobs. Some college students get an internship to gain experience in the kind of job they want to get after graduation. Others do not yet know what kind of permanent job they want. So they may get internships in several different companies or organizations. In this way, they can find out what kind of job they like best. Why are internships so popular? Students can learn about different kinds of jobs. They can do interesting work. They can learn skills and gain valuable experience. And they can meet important people. Students often describe internships as a chance that happens once in a lifetime.

Superstition is a part of British culture today. Although superstition was more alive a hundred years ago, there are still many superstitious people around now, both young and old.

All superstition has grown from something, since there is no smoke without fire. Who was the first one to decide that opening an umbrella in a house is bad luck? Who was the first to walk under a ladder and suffer the consequences? Who hung a horseshoe the wrong way up, smashed a

mirror and spilled the salt? Who first branded Friday 13th as a day on which luck would run out?

Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth century life was hazardous, and the central feature of day-to-day existence was a preoccupation with finding explanations for fortune and misfortune. Religion, diseases and fire might have been the most essential elements in the background of the beliefs of superstition. Even though we are not searching for the same answers today superstition is still with us as a tradition.

The National Geographic Society produces maps, books, and magazines that are popular around the world. It produces films and television shows. It makes computer programs and video for schools. The society’s Committee for Research and Exploration gives money to scientists working in subjects from archaeology to zoology.

The National Geographic Society supports the teaching of geography —the study of the Earth. It helps train teachers in geography. It offers computer users the latest information about the activities of researchers and explorers on its Internet website.

Whenever women's liberation is mentioned, there are often two reaction. One is that this is just a bunch of frustrated women. The other is that this is something that is a white thing, which doesn't concern black women.

The truth is that the exploitation of black women goes deeper than that of white women. Unity of all black women is needed to push for such demands as self-determination, equal pay, free abortion and child-care centers. We should realize the need for the women of the black nation to have a liberation movement of women as part of our movement for total liberation of our people.

The black man has been led to believe that office and skilled jobs are given to the black woman by the white capitalists to make the black man feel inferior. In reality, there aren't enough jobs for everyone, and the black woman suffers the most from low pay and unemployment.

当人们提到女权运动时，通常有两种反应：一种认为，女权运动者不过是一群日子过得不顺心的女人；另一种则认为，女权运动纯粹是白人女性的事，与黑人女性无关。

Many American colleges have health centers where doctors and nurses treat students’medical problems. This service may be included in the cost of attending college. Health insurance is usually needed for extra services.

Students may already be protected under their parents’health insurance policies. If not , many colleges offer their own insurance plans. Students also can buy independent insurance policies from insurance companies. The details of such policies differ, depending on where the student lives. Usually, these policies pay for doctor visits, treatment of injuries and hospital costs.

All in all, people in the United States are responsible for their own medical costs. These can be extremely high in cases of serious illness or accidents. The purpose of health insurance is to make sure that these costs will be paid for.

I have heard her say that all my life. Now, lying in bed, coming awake in the dark, I feel the fury of her energy fighting the good-for-nothing idler within me who wants to go back to sleep instead

of tackling the brand new day.

Silently I protest: I am not a child anymore. I have made something of myself. I am entitled to sleep late.

"Russell, you've got no more gumption than a bump on a log."

She has hounded me with these battle cries since I was a boy in short pants."

"Make something of yourself!"

"Don't be a quitter!"

"Have a little ambition, Buddy. "

我母亲早已不在人世，但她仍时时浮现在我心中，有时早晨天还未亮就把我唤醒。“我最最不能容忍的，就是半途而废的人。”
