A

Opportunity knocked on my door last January when I was given a chance to work in another country. At first, it seemed really scary for me to live on my own. But I had to overcome the true challenge!

Luckily, I met seven new friends, six boys and one girl. They were really nice and I loved their company. We hung out most weekends. We cooked, watched movies, chatted and shared jokes! It was amazing — until something unexpected happened !

One of my friends was diagnosed with kidney (肾) stones which needed to be removed as soon as possible. But our friend could not afford the surgery. He tried to get help from our other friends but they refused him. My heart cried for him! Our friends abandoned him just when he needed them most.

I didn't know how to help him because I didn't have any money either. But I never lost hope. Instead I tried to think of other options. I told him not to worry because he might find a way somehow and everything would be all right.

So I went to the hospital with him. I talked to the surgeon, asking him to do the surgery for him and promising to pay the expenses the next day (As if I had that money). I must have been convincing because the surgeon agreed to do it! Now, how was I going to get that much money?

All I knew was that I needed to help my friend! I tried to borrow money from other friends but I failed. I tried selling my things but no one wanted them. Then I had to talk to my boss. I asked him if I could have my next two months salary in advance — without even thinking on how I would survive for two months without money.

He was surprised and asked me why. I told him that I had a friend who was really in need. Luckily, he gave my two months salary without hesitation! As soon as I had the money I ran to the

hospital and paid all the bills.

Friendship may not only be found in happy moments. Sometimes you can find it on the toughest time in your life!

Shopping is not as simple as you may think! There are all sorts of tricks at play each time we reach out for that particular brand of product on the shelf.

Colouring, for example, varies according to what the producers are trying to sell. Health foods are packaged (包装) in greens, yellows or browns because we think of these as healthy colours. Ice cream packets are often blue and expensive goods, like chocolates, are gold or silver.

When some kind of pain killer was brought out recently, researchers found that the colors turned the customers off because they made the product look weak and ineffective. Eventually, it came on the market in a dark blue and white package--blue because we think of it as safe, and white as calm.

The size of a product can attract a shopper. But quite often a bottle doesn't contain as much as it appears to.

It is believed that the better-known companies spend, on average, 70 percent of the total cost of the product itself on packaging!

The most successful producers know that it's not enough to have a good product. The founder of Pears soap, who for 25 years has used pretty little girls to promote their goods, came to the conclusion: "Any fool can make soap, but it takes a genius to sell it. "

Some students get so nervous before a test, they do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock has studied these highly anxious test-takers.

Sian Beilock: "They start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. I talk about it as your cognitive (认知的) horsepower that you could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.

Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test — takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.

Sian Beilock: "What we think happens is when students put it down on paper, they think about the worst that could happen and they reappraise the situation. They might realize it's not as bad as they might think it was before and, in essence, it prevents these thoughts from popping up when they're actually taking a test. "

The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.

The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort.

Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of twelve percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of five percent.

Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test.

Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B– for those who did not.

Sian Beilock: " What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who'd done our writing intervention (干预,介入), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most prone to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don' t normally get nervous in these testing situations. "

But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library

and still improve their performance.

39. What may happen if students have the problem of test anxiety?

A. Test anxiety can improve students' performance to some degree.

B. Students' attention and memory resources run out when worried.

C. Students may not be admitted into their favorite college if worried.

D. Test anxiety is sure to cause students to fail the test.

40. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. In the first math test, students who sat quietly performed better.

B. In the second math test, students who wrote about their feelings did worse.

C. Some college students are highly anxious test-takers while others are not in the tests.

D. The result in the math test agrees with that in the biology test.

41. What does the underlined phrase "popping up" mean?

A. Appearing suddenly.

B. Fading away.

C. Becoming clearly.

D. Giving out.

42. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. It is a common practice for students being worried before a test.

B. Being worried before tests does harm to students' performance.

C. Anxious students overcome test anxiety by writing down fears.

D. It is important for students to overcome test anxiety.

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments—mostly for entertainment purposes — is fair and respectful?

Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain "collections" of interesting "things" rather than protective habitats (栖息地). Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.

Zoos claim(声称) to educate people and save endangered species(物种), but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals' natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species' name, diet, and natural range (分布区). The animals' normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don't usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.

The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.

Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding (圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven't we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?

Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect

animals' natural habitats.

43. In the state of zoochosis, animals .

A. remain in cages

B. behave strangely

C. attack other animals

D. enjoy moving around

44. What does the author try to argue in the passage?

A. Zoos are not worth the public support.

B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.

C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings.

D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.

45. The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by .

A. pointing out the faults in what zoos do

B. using evidence he has collected at zoos

C. questioning the way animals are protected

D. discussing the advantages of natural habitats

46. Although he argues against zoos, the author would still agree that .

A. zoos have to keep animals in small cages

B. most animals in zoos are endangered species

C. some endangered animals are reproduced in zoos

D. it's acceptable to keep animals away from their habitats

The Best of Friends

The evidence for harmony (和谐) may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels.

An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past. "We were surprised by just how positive today's young people seem to be about their families, "said one member of the research team. "They're expected to be rebellious (叛逆的) and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds: they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There's more negotiation (商议) and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don't want to rock the boat. "

So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. "My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me," says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. "I always tell them when I'm going out clubbing. As long as they know what I'm doing, they're fine with it. "Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. "Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I'd done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that. "

Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A researcher comments, "Our surprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their

parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to taking it over. "

47. What is the popular image of teenagers today?

A. They worry about school.

B. They dislike living with their parents.

C. They have to be locked in to avoid troubles.

D. They quarrel a lot with other family members.

48. The study shows that teenagers don't want to .

A. share family responsibility.

B. cause trouble in their families.

C. go boating with their family.

D. make family decisions.

49. Compared with parents of 30 years ago, today's parents .

A. go to clubs more often with their children

B. are much stricter with their children

C. care less about their children's life

D. give their children more freedom

50. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Negotiation in family.

B. Education in family.

C. Harmony in family.

D. Teenage trouble in family.

Rented Boyfriends

Taobao. com, China's largest online marketplace, is never short of bizarre offers.

And here is the latest one: boyfriends for rent.

A rented boyfriend can do the following: accompanying the girl to visit friends and families, go shopping, having meals and even getting a kiss out of courtesy. The charge is by the hour.

The services become hot with the approach of the Spring Festival, the most important festival for family reunions.

In China, parents especially worry about unmarried daughters.

Single women will have to face the same old question at the family dinner table: have you got a boyfriend?

And for those who haven't found their Mr. Rights, renting a boyfriend emerges as a solution.

So, which men are willing to offer that service?

“I offer such a service only because I'm bored and know fewer female friends at work," said Ding Hui, 27, a salesman in the plastic industry in Shanghai, with a monthly salary of more than 10,000 yuan.

He charged 3,000 yuan each, and the customer had to cover his round-trip tickets, accommodations and bought him clothes to make him look smart.

More than 260 rent-a-boyfriend services can be found on the https://www.360docs.net/doc/f5970662.html,, with the number climbing.

范文:

With the popularity of the Internet, many high school students open their own microblogs or begin to use Wechat. For one thing, it can provide a colorful platform to showcase their talent. For another, it is a useful way to release their pressure. And all these make it more and more popular with high school students. But on the other hand, managing one' s microblog or use Wechat will take a lot of time and energy, while this should be used to study, which is students’ main task.

In my opinion, I am greatly in favor of this activity. Nowadays the Internet is playing an important and essential role in our life. Therefore as high school students of the so-called Information Age, we need to learn and make use of this meaningful tool to communicate and display ourselves. More importantly, organizing microblogs or using Wechat needs various abilities such as writing, designing and so on. As a result, we improve ourselves during the procedures .

Microblog or Wechat itself is of little harm. It is your attitude towards that matters. We should take the advantages and avoid some bad effects.
