由一道选择题浅析though和 although的异同

《优化设计》上有一道选择题，内容如下：

， he is looked down upon.

A. Talented though the artist is

B. As the artist is talented

C. Talented although the artist is

D. Are talented as the artist

此题答案为A，许多学生不清楚为什么不选C，这里就考查了though和although的区别。笔者现将两者的异同点总结如下。

用作连词时，though和although同义，表示“虽然”，在一般情况下可以互换使用，只是although比though更为正式。例如：

They are generous though/although they are poor.

他们尽管穷，却十分慷慨。

Though/Although it is hard work， I enjoy it.

尽管这是一件苦活，我倒很乐意干。

但although比though语气较重，常用以强调让步概念。例如：

Jim insisted on doing it although I warned him not to.

尽管我告诫Jim不要做那件事，但他却坚持要做。

而在一些情况下，although不能与though互换使用，只能用though。

（1）though能接受even的强调，但although则不能。例如：

I forgot to do my homework even though my mother reminded me.

尽管妈妈提醒了我，我还是忘了要做我的家庭作业。

（2）though可与as连用，意义为“好像”、“仿佛”，相当于as if，而although则不能。例如：

Jane closed her eyes as though she were very tired.

Jane闭上眼睛，仿佛很累似的。

（3）当让步分句采用虚拟语气，是一种臆想的非真实的情况时，通常用though而不用although。例如：

Though all the world were against me， I should still hold to my opinion.

尽管全世界反对我，我们仍然会坚持我的观点。

（4）though可将让步状语从句中的表语提前而倒装（此时相当于as，注意表语如果是可数名词单数，要省略a/an），而although则不可以。例如：

Child though/as he is， he can do many great things.

尽管他是个小孩，但他能做许多大事。

Clever though he was， he failed the exam.

尽管他很聪明，但他考试却失败了。

而本文开关的选择题选A而不选C的原因就在于此。

（5）though可作副词用，在非正式语体中作连接性状语，而although则不能。例如：

It is hard work； I enjoy it though.

这是件苦活，不过我倒乐意干。

He is a bad manager. There is no reason， though， to dismiss him.

他是个差劲的经理，然而没有理由（就此）把他免职。
