Doctor, I am worried about James because he has a high fever and he’s vomited a lot (he’s been vomiting) since yesterday. He’s very restless and he’s been crying all the time. Could you tell me a little bit more about the vomiting?

Yes, he’s vomited five times, and while he is vomiting, he holds his head as if it’s hurting him and I think he’s probably got a very bad headache.

Well, Mrs Smith, I think that I need to establish whether or not James has got meningitis, and I suggest this because of his history of temperature and vomiting and also because he’s finding it uncomfortable when I try to flex his neck. Now it’s quite straightforward to establish wheth er he’s got meningitis, and we’ll do this with a lumbar puncture. It’s very quickly undertaken and it shouldn’t be too upsetting for him. It will tell us very quickly whether what we’re dealing with is meningitis. And if it is, than we’ll be able to start appropriate antibiotic therapy straight away.
