Listening for an Anecdote An anecdote is a short story based on someone’s personal experience. It is often used to support an idea in a discussion. When you hear an anecdote, pay attention to how it explains, supports or proves the speaker’s point. Anecdotes often begin with phrases like Once, I remember, or One time, etc. Example: It’s easy to miss opportunities to bargain if you don’t know the local culture. Once I went to a flea market. Someone was selling wonderful old advertisement signs. I had to have one! I paid the asking price without bargaining, but then I noticed the woman next me. She and the seller were discussing the price. Finally, the woman and the seller agreed on a price. That woman got her sign for half the price that I paid!
