AThe Best Theatres of the Year“A Streetcar Named Desire”Maxine Peake, following outstanding performances in “Hamlet” and “The Skriker”, now plays Blanche DuBois. But new technology could see the end of tat (粗⿇布) with the clothes themselves reminding the owners of their existence.“Smart clothes” could help us clear out our wardrobes by sending messages or tweeting (推⽂) to us if they haven’t been worn for a good while. If these messages are ignored, the clothes will get in touch with a clothing charity and ask to be reused, with an organization automatically sending out donation in order. They could also be programmed for a public sale where they are sold to whoever offers the highest price on eBay.Experts at Birmingham, City University are developing the “connected wardrobe”to encourage more suitable clothes consumption (消费). The new kind of wardrobe sees clothes tagged, using washable contactless technology.Mark Brill, senior lecturer at the university, said, “Think of the surprise when an owner suddenly receives bids (出价) for items that they didn’t know in their wardrobe. The ‘connected wardrobe’is a practical pleasant idea to encourage people to think about their clothing consumption. Finally, I hope it will encourage more proper fashion consumption. Perhaps we can even move away from the idea of the ownership of clothing. When we’ve worn them enough, the items will pass themselves on to their next keeper.”It follows in the footsteps of the “Internet of things”—an idea that sees ordinary household items connecting to the Internet in order to share information. Now, the “Internet of Clothes” will make sure that neglected clothes will tweet and text the owners,“asking” to be worn depending on the weather and frequency of wear. Clothes will keep track of other information, such as who owned them before, as well as how much they originally cost, who made them and how much the worker was paid for them.5. What does the author say about the “smart clothes”?A. They may be recycled if long forgotten.B. They have gotten popularity.C. They give warnings if worn out.D. They may be donated on eBay.6. What is suggested in the last paragraph?A. The Internet is a place to share items.B. Weather affects the connected wardrobe.C. Household items can be a source of information.D. Clothes are sold online at a low price.7. The underlined word “neglected”in the last paragraph means “_____”.A. changeableB. unforgettableC. recycledD. unnoticed8. What’s the passage mainly about?A. The future of clothes consumption.B. The new technology about clothes.C. Common things sold on the Internet.D. Recycled wardrobes on the market.CCold weather during winter months may keep many people from running in the open air. However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. Researchers say running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many people say running in winter can be difficult. Two reasons are the low temperatures and cold winds. Yet many runners might find it easier than running in hot weather. That could be because lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate and the body’s dehydration (脱⽔) levels are lower than those in warmer conditions. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. This information comes from sports scientist John Brewer at St Mary’s University in London. He and other researchers put a group of people into a room they called an “environmental Chamber”. They then recreated summer and winter weather conditions in the room. The test subjects were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions. The team recorded biological measurements of the runners.Brewer says every movement runners make produces heat. One way in which people lose heat is by sweating (流汗). The body also loses heat by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin, which puts more pressure on the heart in summer because it’s much harder to lose heat in the warm environment. However, the body doesn’t have to work as hard to transport blood to the skin’s surface in cold conditions. That means running in cooler temperatures requires less energy.Several websites note that the most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Wear shoes that will keep you from falling. Keeping as dry as possibleis most important when exercising in low temperatures. And wear more than one layer (层) of clothing to keep sweat away from your skin. So don’t let winter keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.9. What were the test subjects required to do in the “environmental chamber”?A. Stay in the room in the hot and cold conditions.B. Run more than 10,000 meters in the warm environment.C. Run 10,000 meters under summer and winter weather conditions.D. Stay in the room for a long time in the cold environment.10. Running in cooler temperatures requires less energy because _____.A. it prevents runners producing sweatB. it’s much harder for the body to lose heatC. it’s easier for the runners to breathe fresh airD. it’s easier for the body to send blood to the skin’s surface11. Which of the following are proper ways to run in cold conditions?①Wearing as dryly as possible.②Wearing only one layer of clothing.③Wearing shoes that will prevent falling.A.①②B.②③C.①③D.①②③12. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To show his love of running in cold weather.B. To persuade people to stay indoors in winter.C. To give some advice on running in cold weather.D. To encourage people to run in cold weather.DWe had about half an hour until the bus would arrive to take us to the airport. I wasn’t worried about my daughter. At ten years old, she could easily entertain herself. But what was my four-year-old son going to do for the next 30 minutes?Half an hour could seem like a long time for a pre-school child. He began playing with his toy car. Then he noticed a boy similar in age. Actually, they noticed each other. Slowly, theybegan to interact (互动). At first, they shared smiles, which soon led to sharing toys. And before I knew it, they were running and playing in the hotel lobby.I realized that the scene described above was not uncommon. However, there was one thing that I have to mention: The boys did not share a common language. However, this little thing didn’t seem to stop them from their fun in the least. They were two little boys who had just met, and they were having more fun than anyone else in the lobby. In fact, I believed they would have played together all day if we had let them.Classrooms around the world are becoming more and more diverse (多种多样的). And that’s a good thing. But with this diversity comes a responsibility to our students. We must provide ways in which they can interact and feel comfortable, despite the language that they do or don’t speak. We must allow students who share the same interests to spend time together—even when they don’t share the same language. By doing this, we immediately place them in their comfort zone. When they work within their strengths, students’ confidence grows.Furthermore, as walls come down, students are more likely to welcome and work together with those whom they may not have noticed before.13. From the first paragraph, we can infer that_____.A. the author arrived at the airport half an hour earlier.B. the author was worried about his son.C. the author’s son could easily entertain himself.D. the author’s daughter was worried about her little brother.14. What happened to the two boys without sharing the same language?A. They played together happily.B. They learned from each other.C. They had difficulty in communicating.D. They made noises in the hotel lobby.15. According to the passage, students who_____.A. share the same language would be friends.B. come from the same place can communicate well.C. have the same interests should spend time together.D. come from different families have different habits.第⼆节 (共5⼩题;每⼩题2分,满分10分)根据短⽂内容,从短⽂后的选项中选出能填⼊空⽩处的最佳选项。

Though he was pretty bad at school, he had a gift for understanding mechanical objects. As a teenager, he bought a movie camera, took it apart to understand how it worked and then put it back together again. He used it to create home movies. In 1930, Jacques joined the French Naval Academy and planned to become a pilot, but three years later he had a car accident and got injured. To regain his power, doctors suggested that he swim, and during his travels with the French Navy in 1936 a friend gave him some goggles (护目镜) to help him see underwater. His plans to take to the sky might have been killed but luckily his eyes were opened to a magical world under the sea.In 1950, Jacques got hold of an old British warship and turned it into a research vessel (船) that he named the RV Calypso. He used it to sail around the world and as a base for exploring underwater habitats and shipwrecks (遇难船) — from the Antarctic to the Amazon. But he soon realized that to collect money for his research he needed to get the public interested, so he began writing books and making TV series about his adventures. He finally won three Oscars for his films. In the 1960s, Jacques joined in three futuristic projects to build underwater labs, nicknamed Conshelf Ⅰ, Ⅱand Ⅲ. And in 1963 he and five other researchers spent 30 days living under the sea! During his many explorations, Jacques began to notice the harm humans were doing to the sea, so in 1973 he set up the Cousteau Society for the Protection of Ocean Life.Jacques spent the rest of his life supporting environmental causes such as banning whale hunting. This text is mainly developed by ______.A. following the time orderB. making comparisonsC. examining differencesD. giving examplesCWe’re often told “laughter is the best medicine”. Laughter is ancient and instinctual, and a fundamental part of everyday life - something most of us enjoy naturally. There are comedy channels on TV, comedy festivals and our favorite funny friend wh o’s sure to get our giggle on.So why do we need laughter experts? Surely they’re for people who can’t laugh for whatever reason. However, while the ability to laugh is innate, the decision to activate and use it to its full ability is a choice. When life gets stressful; illness creeps in; relationships are put to the test or we’re struggling financially, there’s rarely much to laugh about. So, we don’t. Yet tuning into the lighter, more humorous side of life, and activating one’s “laughter self” is critica l to mental health. Rather than waiting for something funny to happen or for life to be a bed of roses, we can transform our emotional state by tapping into our laughter and humor resources. This helps create distance between us and our pain and improve our moods and resilience (恢复力) to stress. It provides relief and release from some of the stress that has embedded in our bodies and minds, freeing ourselves to power forward, even a little.Ironically, because laughter is an innate and largely unconscious b ehavior, it’s rarely given much thought. As it’s seldom thought about, it can’t be that important.Wrong. If laughing was a more complex behavior, my belief is people would pay greater honor to it, rather than something to laugh off. It’s actually one of t he most complicated things our bodies process. It is a vocal means of communication before language forms and the brain has fully developed. The vast majority of us maintain the ability to laugh until our final curtain call, even amid declining cognitive function.Turning toward the healing power of humor and laughter assists with personal and professional resilience, performance and overall well-being. No joke.28. The underlined word “innate” in the second paragraph means ______.A. from birthB. from learningC. from daily lifeD. from achievements29. According to the author, what should we do when there is little to laugh about?A. Wait for something funny to happen.B. Accept what life has presented to us.C. Exercise to get rid of the stress.D. Make the most of our own sense of humor.30. What does the author argue in paragraph 5?A. Laughing could improve our cognitive abilities.B. Laughing deserves our more attention.C. The ability to laugh forms after the brain is fully developed.D. Laughing is a complicated means of communication.31. What could be the best title for the text?A. How laughter worksB. How laughter brings us togetherC. The health benefits of laughter are no jokeD. Laughter experts are in great demandDIf you were to rate the most walkable cities in the world, what would you look for? Would it be how shaded the sidewalks are? How many benches there are along the way to your destination? Or maybe how close you are to shops or local attractions?Well, the researchers at the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), located in New York, US, wanted to know which of the world’s cities were the best for pedestrians. So, they did just that.To determine which cities were the most walkable, they rated cities based on factors such as how close citizens were to car-free areas like public parks, how close citizens lived in relation to schools and hospitals, and how short their journeys were overall.According to the study, they found that the most walkable cities in the world are London, Paris, Bogota and Hong Kong. Overall, London was at the top of the list, outranking nearly 1,000 cities around the world on these key factors.“In order to provide safety and inviting walking conditions for all city residents, it is essenti al to shift the balance of space in our cities away from cars, providing more travel options for people,” CEO of ITDP Heather Thompson told the magazine Cities Today. She continued, “We have so much to gain - from cleaner air to better health to stronger local economies and deeper bonds within communities, and we all need that now more than ever.”Unfortunately, it seems that very few cities make pedestrians a priority, though.“Our city streets across the planet are already full of cars. If you really want to see the worst for walkability, it is the really disordered cities of the US,” commented Taylor Reich, a research associate at ITDP and the primary author of the guide to making cities more walkable. So, what can cities do to make their streets friendlier for pedestrians?“There’s no one secret sauce; there’s no one thing you can do to make a city walkable,” Reich said. “It’s many decisions that are made at all levels from individual streets all the way up to the city design.”32. What’s the purpose of t he study?A. To explore factors impacting the walkability of cities.B. To investigate pedestrians’ satisfaction with city life.C. To find out the most walkable cities around the world.D. To call on cities to make streets more walkable.33. On what basis do researchers measure a city’s walkability?A. The amount of green space on sidewalks.B. Traffic and road conditions for pedestrians.C. The number of public services for pedestrians.D. Accessibility of certain destinations to pedestrians.34. What does Heather Thompson suggest to improve walking conditions?A. Increasing travel choices.B. Developing local economies.C. Limiting the number of cars.D. Connecting local communities.35. What does Taylor Reich point out?A. US cities are designed to give priority to pedestrians.B. It is everyone’s responsibility to make a city walkable.C. Cars are major contributors to reduced walkability.D. Both small- and large-scale measures are required to improve walkability.第二节(共5小题;5小题2.5,满分12.5)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可填入空白处的最佳选项。

Modern technology, in the form of miniature cameras, smart phones and the internet, means stealing and sharing answers has never been easier. Indeed, the problem has got so __41__ that on March 1st the Japanese government asked universities to __42__ mobile phones from the rooms they use to conduct their entrance exams. Nor are students the only cheats. Teachers, whose salaries often depend on the success of their __43__, are not above dropping the odd hint about what is the right answer before or during a test—or even correcting test papers after the event. And the invigilators(监考人) who police the actual exam are not always immune to bribery, either. At the same time, technology can detect cheats more easily than before.Software developed by exam-setting firms detects cheating by __44__ the probability of particular patterns of answers being honest. A correct answer is a correct answer, of course, but unless a candidate answers all questions correctly the pattern of right and wrong answers can point to collaboration. If two candidates’ patterns of answers are __45__ or identical, warning flags go up. If more than two, hanky-panky is a racing certainty. In tests where the candidate is allowed to change his mind about an answer, the pattern of changes also provides information. Several candidates making the same change is suspicious. So is a case where all changes are from wrong to right and __46__ improvements in scores by an individual candidate, compared with previous attempts, also raise an electronic eyebrow.A company called Kryterion examines matters even more closely. Kryterion administers its tests online, and the invigilators sit at its headquarters, watching test-takers around the world through webcams and never meeting them in person. The opportunities for envelopes __47__ with banknotes to change hands are thus minimized. Remote computers are “locked down〞 with security software to prevent unauthorized windows from being opened. Invigilators warn or disqualify test-takers whose eyes or hands __48__ in suspicious ways. The software also alerts them if difficult questions are being answered suspiciously __49__, or if two test-takers’ answers match too closely.III. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices markedA, B, C, and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information givenin the passage you have just read.(A)Amy Chun’s book The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, which advocates a strict Chinese parenting style, has aroused a heated online debate. So should a parent crackthe whip or take too much care to produce a successful, happy child? An article in the Wall Street Journal lists the things Amy Chua’s daughtersSophia and Lousia were not allowed to do, including attending a sleepover; havinga play-date; being in a school play; watching TV or playing a computer game; choosingtheir own extracurricular activities; getting any grade less than an A; not being the number one student in every subject except piano and violin; not playing the piano or violin. In defense of Western parenting, Mike Vilensky says in a New York magazine that the cost of a strict timetable of activities decided by parents is a loss of creativity. And creativity is what is behind the big successes such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. While no one seems to argue that children of Chinese tradition do continually better than their peers, there are suggestions from the Chinese community that the old type of the strict Chinese parent is outdated.A columnist from China Daily says that the context of this strict form of parenting is based on parts of Chinese culture which glorify suffering, and tells mothers they are only as good as their children. However, she says that the general feeling is that Chinese parents in China do not act like this anymore. “It’s ironic that as young Chinese mothers in Beijing and Shanghai are accepting Western ideas about child raising, mothers from Connecticut are sinking deeper into China’s darker past in child r aising.〞Je Wang from a website says that as a second generation Chinese immigrant she finds it difficult to justify a strict education. She argues that the parenting style is now irrelevant as the consequences of failure in a middle class family aren’t as terrible as it would be for their parents. This, she wonders, might make it harder for her daughters to understand why Amy Chua is so strict.65. Amy Chua’s book The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother has aroused a heated online debate because it ____.A. lists the things a successful child should not doB. deals with the negative aspect of American educationC. is directed to the public concern for widespread home-schoolingD. challenges the western idea of less strict parenting66. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. Modern parents are justifiably doubtful about the truth of Amy Chua’s parenting.B. In Chinese culture parents are considered successful when their children are successful.C. American middle class parents c onsider their children’s success or failure vital to them.D. A child’s creativity results from less strict parenting and a loose schedule.67. Which of the following best summarize the passage?A. Is lack of creativity a major problem in Asian schooling?B. Is strict Chinese parent the best?C. Is suffering necessary to a successful child?D. Is parenting style irrelevant to a child’s success?(B)Internet has gone into nearly every family. Our planet has shrunk. It’s nowa “global village〞 where countries are only seconds away by fax or phone or satellite link. But much water runs by the mill that the miller knows not of. Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being, according to the research at Carnegie Mellon University.Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net appeared to cause the bad feelings.Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being, researchers supposed. Faceless, bodiless “virtual〞communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology itself; it’s about how it is used,〞 says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors. “It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.〞68. What does the writer mean by saying “much water runs by the mill that the miller knows not of〞?A. People often surf the Internet and have bad feelings.B. Internet is widely used but we are unconscious of its bad effect.C. Surfing the Internet is better than watching TV.D. Too much time spent on the Internet usually cause bad feelings.69. Why some people are not psychologically healthy? The possible reason may be that ____.A. they are too busy to communicate with their family and friendsB. the Internet communication can’t meet their psychological needC. the Internet communication is facelessD. the Internet is too slow70. What does the last paragraph tell us?A. Social factors are the base of technology.B. The use of new technology contributes to people’s illness.C. The use technology is more important than technology itself.D. The development and application of technology can’t be separated from social factors.71. What’s the main idea of this passage?A. Internet use may do harm to our psychological health.B. Too much internet use will cause bad feelings.C. It’s important to talk face to face with your friends.D. Technology is not always good for people’s health.(C)Do you want a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way the various networks of people about patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being developed to deliver medicine to the patient — no matter where he or she may be.Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis will be based on real physiological data from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone, it is perfectly practical to send a patient’s important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past.Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural 〔countryside〕care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need — especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and experts’ opinions. But there is one problem. Bandwidth is the limiting factor for sending complex medical pictures around the world,—CU photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users. Communication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both thesecond-generation Internet and third generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical service.Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts’ opinions and diagnosi s are common.72. The writer chiefly talks about ____.A. the use of telemedicineB. the on-line doctorsC. medical care and treatmentD. communication improvement73. The basis of remote diagnosis will be ____.A. personal data assistanceB. some words of a patientC. real physiological informationD. medical pictures from the Internet74. Which of the following statements is true according to the text?A. Patients don’t need doctors in hospitals any more.B. It is impossible to send a patient’s signs over the telephone.C. Many teams use telemedicine dealing with disasters now.D. Broadband communications will become cheaper in the future.75. The “problem〞 in the fourth paragraph refers to the fact that ____.A. bandwidth isn’t bi g enough to send complex medical picturesB. the second-generation of Internet has not become popular yetC. communication satellites can only deal with short-term needsD. there is not enough equipment for spreading the medical care(D)Picture a typical MBA lecture theatre twenty years ago. In it the majority of students will have conformed(使一致;遵从) to the standard model of the time: male, middle class and Western. Walk into a class today, however, and you'll get a completely different impression. For a start, you will now see plenty more women—the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, for example, boasts that 40% of its new enrolment is female, you will also see a wide range of ethnic groups and nationals of practically every country. It might be tempting, therefore, to think that the old barriers have been broken down and equal opportunity achieved. But, increasingly, this apparent diversity is becoming a mask for a new type of conformity. Behind the differences in sex, skin tones and mother tongues, there are common attitudes, expectations and ambitions which risk creating a set of clones among the business leaders of the future.Diversity, it seems, has not helped to address basic weaknesses in business leadership. So, what can be done to create more effective managers of the commercial world? According to Valerie Gauthier, associate dean at HEC Paris, the key lies in the process by which MBA programs recruit(招募) their students. At the moment candidates are selected on a fairly narrow set of criteria such as prior academic and career performance, and analytical and problem solving abilities. This is then coupled to a school's mixture of what a diverse class should look like, with the result that passport, ethnic origin and sex can all become influencing factors. Butschools rarely dig down to attitude and approach—arguably the only diversity that, in a business context really matters.Professor Gauthier believes schools should not just be selecting candidates from traditional sectors such as banking, consultancy and industry. They should also be seeking individuals who have backgrounds in areas such as political science, the creative arts, history or philosophy, which will allow them to put business decisions into a wider context.Indeed, there does seem to be a demand for the more rounded leaders such diversity might create. A study by Mannaz, a leadership development company, suggests that, while the bully-boy chief executive of old may not have been eliminated completely, there is a definite shift in emphasis towards less tough styles of management—at least in America and Europe. Perhaps most significant, according to Mannaz, is the increasing interest large companies have in management models, such as those popular in Scandinavia, which seek to combine the hard and soft aspects of leadership and encourage delegated responsibility.76. What characterizes the business school student population of today?A. Greater diversity.B. Intellectual maturity.C. Exceptional diligence.D. Higher ambition.77. What is the author's concern about current business school education?A. It will arouse students' unrealistic expectation.B. It will produce business leaders of a uniform style.C. It focuses on theory rather than on practical skills.D. It stresses competition rather than cooperation.78. What aspect of diversity does Valerie Gauthier think is most important?A. Age and educational background.B. Social and professional experience.C. Attitude and approach to business.D. Ethnic origin and gender.79. What applicants does the author think MBA programs should consider recruiting?A. Applicants with prior experience in business companies.B. Applicants with sound knowledge in math and statistics.C. Applicants from outside the traditional sectors.D. Applicants from less developed regions and areas.80. What does Mannaz say about the current management style?A. It is eliminating the tough aspects of management.B. It encourages male and female executives to work side by side.C. It adopts the bully-boy chief executive model.D. It is shifting towards models.(E)81.________The British Treasury informed us that the plastic pound was introduced in the Isle of Man because the pound coin, which had been introduced there in 1982 by the Isle of Man Treasury, had been very slow to catch on and was still not proving popular there by 1983.82. ________The British Treasury introduced the pound coin in the rest of Britain a whole year later than in the Isle of Man, in April 1983, and their information office reports that in Britain the pound coin caught on very quickly. The ordinary person however seemed to hold the opposite opinion and you can still find a great many British people who do not like pound coins, although of course they are now so common you have to use them.83. ________Will the plastic pound be used in Britain? The Treasury Information Office thought not. The Bank of England has experimented with different types of plastic and still found no way to prevent counterfeiting. And since the British public has now accepted the pound coin, there is no need to look any further.84. ________And in the Isle of Man? The Isle of Man Treasury reported that the plastic pound found immediate success. Within six weeks of its introduction, they said, there was 99% penetration. This means that after six weeks, there was only one person in a hundred who had not handled a plastic note. And by early 1985, there were very fewpaper notes still left in circulation.85. ________They felt they had solved the counterfeit problem by using a very secret manufacturing process--- which they quite understandably refused to divulge to us. But they did say that their plastic pound could be “check-weighed〞 by the banks in the same way as coins, and this of course helps to identify counterfeit currency very speedily. They also intend only to issue low denomination currency made of plastic; with higher denomination, i.e. over a pound, the risks of forgery would be far higher.IV.
