Unit 1 book 1 1. 听力原文 ( Active Listening andSpeaking 1) Hi, I 'm Donna Bones, life and relationship coach here in New York City, and the author of It 'Asll About You. In this program, we' ltlalk about how to make a good first impression in college. And the first thing is really just the basics. Make sure that you dress nice. You know, just because you can doesn 'mt ean you should wear sweat pants, and be really casual when you go to class. Be on time. Being on time just shows respect and it 's a good habit to get into for your whole life. If you can sit near the front where you can participate and ask questions, then that 'a sgood way to make a good impression. And, really study. I know it tempting ,but you are in college to learn. So, if you can, really make your studies a priorityand do that first. So the best way to make a good impression is to make school your top priority, dress nice, ask questions in class, show up on time, and really dedicate yourself to learning. I promise you as you get older and go through life, yes, you ' ll lookat the great times you had in college. But the most important thing is the education that you got at college. And as far as to the other students, if you want to make a good impression, maybe, you know, go join a fraternity or sorority or something. And join a club, orsomething else to get you involved with other people, because then you can get to meet other people and make new friends. So I think, as long as you 're true to yourself, andconfident in yourself, and proud of yourself, you' ll always make a good first impression no matter where you go. 2.words bank Some examples for yourreference: Words Sentences I had no idea what Sunday lunch meant in French terms, whether it was casual formal or casual. priority His first prioritywas to find someone who could aid him in his search. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957. The Pentagon set up a research team in 1958 to create a computer network to operate during disasterslike a nuclear war. The resulting network linked U.S. scientific and academic researchers. It grew into the World Wide Web or the Internet that became the network system of the Information Age. In1985, the National Science Foundation created anetwork which provided a free national service toany U.S. research and education institution. Later, large corporations began to build their ownnetworks. All those networks finally joined the Pentagon’s network to form the Internet. By the 1990s, anyone with a computer, a modern, and Internet software could link up to the Internet. In thefuture, the Internet will probably grow more complex and become part of a larger network called theinformation highway. With that people could bank, shop, watch TV, and perform many other activities online.Task2: The Internet—A Small TownThe Internet is a global network, but in many ways it’s like a small town with similar services to offer. There are electronic post offices to send and receive e-mail, functioning somewhat more efficiently than the Post Office we know. Thereare libraries of information that stay open 24 hours a day with millions of books and documents to browse or search through on the World Wide Web or WWW. You can also enjoy real-time text-based communication, using written or printed material to communicate with others immediately and almost “face to face”. Local coffee shops are seen in the guise of chat room, with people dropping by at all hours of the day and night to socialize. Online education and training is available just as it is in a “bricks and mortar” university or school. Online banking offers you all the services available at your local bank, without fearing to be mugged at an ATM. You can buy almost anything, listen to your local radio station or do your grocery shopping. Indeed, the Internet is your town in a box!Task3: If only life could be like a computer! To get your daily exercise, just click on “run”!If you need a break from life, click on “suspend”. Hit “any key” to co ntinue life when ready. To “add/remove” someone in your life, click settings. To improve your appearance, just adjust the display settings. When you lose your car keys, click on “find”. You could click on “send” and the kids would go to bed immediately. To feel like a person, click on “refresh”.Click on “close” to shut up the noises. To undo a mistake, click on “back”.Is your furniture getting old? Click “update”.If you messed up your life, you could press “Alt, Ctrl, Delete” and start all over!Speaking1. F2. T3.T4.F5.TUnit10II. Speaking1.The biggest decision I ever made in my life was deciding which high school should I went to. Ihad a choice of two high schools. One is an international high school; the other is a general high school. It was a big choice, because it is not only a decision of school, but also a decision of my future. If I choice to go to the international school, I will study in a totally different way and must go abroad in the future. After thinking over for a long period of time, I decided to go to thatinternational high school. It has influenced me a lot. First, because of this choice, I met some wonderful people who became my good friends. Second, I studied with some excellent teachers from different countries and places, and learned many interesting knowledge. If I hadn’t gone to this school, my life would have been different.2.One of the challenging experiencesthat I have overcome was in my junior high school. at thattime, I must get 100score in the PE test so that I can went to my dream high school.Unfortunately, my score in the practice test never got 100. To achieve the goal, I made a detailed “sprint plan”. Every day after school, I would practice my solid ball and basketball skills with my PE teacher and run about 2000 meters to improve my physique. For two month, no matter what the weather, I always keep exercising and practicing. During this time I sometimes wanted to give up because I didn’t see any improvement. But I told to myself that “you must hang in there! If you give up, all you efforts was failed”In order to push myself, I sometimes would take my best friends Lily to supervise me and she really heled me a lot. Finally, I got 100score in the formal test and went to my dream high school.。

SSBI Teaching Plan---Speaking Strategies (1)Gao Peng (20/07/2006)Course DescriptionCourse: Integrated course (College English)Students: Non-English majors, Band 3Purpose:✧To raise the students’ awareness of diff erent kinds of strategies used forspeaking English.✧To ask the learners to experience conscious use of speaking strategies intheir speaking tasks and report their own use of the strategies to the class.✧To have them compare the strategies reported with a list of speakingstrategies based on the research work introduced by the teacher.Time: 45 minutesFormat: Role play and discussionMaterials:✧Role play cards✧Copies of “Some Useful Strategies”✧Pre-reading tasks for Unit 7 of Book 3 (College English---new edition) Procedure1.Explanation (teacher: 5 mins)Tell the students that they are going to do a role-play activity. One member will play the part of A, while the other will play the part of B. (Change the roles in the middle to practice more) Inform the participants that some of them will have to play their roles before the whole class. Tell the participants to pay attention to the strategies they use before, during and after playing their roles. Before doing the task, they may brainstorm some other words or expressions, which are particularly used for this situation besides the ones given.(Role A: You are supposed to act as a salesperson. You will have 5 minutes to persuade your partner to buy your goods (no more than 5 items). You may talk about the brand name, quality, labeling, packaging, instructions, reliability and after-sales service, etc. You may refer to the useful expressions such as “ This is our (model); It cost s (price); It’s suitable for (purpose); We can deliver (from stock); It’s available in (color) and (size); We can offer a discount of (%), etc.)(Role B: You are going to act as a potential customer. You have to give your reasons if you decide to buy some of the goods or come up with some excuses not to buy. You may talk about the brand name, quality, labeling, packaging, instructions, reliability and after-sales service, etc. You may use some wh-questions (who, what, when, where, why and how) to make clarifications.)2.Role-play (pair work: 10 mins)Ask the participants to form pairs, and act out the task3.Presentation (pair work: 15 mins)After some time for rehearsal, find some people to perform their roles before the whole class.4.Discussion (group work: 10 mins)Have the students work in groups of 4 or 6, and brainstorm as many strategies they used as possible. List these strategies on a sheet of paper. (The group leader will organize the discussion and the secretary will have to note down the strategies mentioned by all the group members.) Group 1 and 2 will focus on strategies before speaking, group 3, 4 and 5 on the strategies during speaking, and group 6, 7 and 8 on strategies after speaking. And then the selected student in each group will report to the whole class5.Wrap-up (teacher: 5 mins)Sum up the strategies reported, and compare them with a list of strategies from previous research finding (See the copies of “Some Useful Strategies”). Speaking strategies do not simply involve knowledge and skills of the target language. Effective communication strategies also make up an important part of speaking. Ask participants whether they have more strategies to add to the list.Wrap-Up (for teachers):Suggest that the teachers share this kind of strategy list with their students or create their own lists together. The students themselves may have excellent suggestions about the strategies that they use when learning and using English. Since strategy use can vary from task to task and skill to skill, the list of strategies may never be fully complete. If the students are aware of and know how to apply a broad range of strategies for a broad range of purposes, this flexibility will enhance their effectiveness when performing language tasks. Note that the task is from implicit to explicit in its structure.Role-Play Cards (A)Role A: You are supposed to act as a salesperson. You will have 5 minutes to persuade your partner to buy your goods (no more than 5 items).
