Tomorrow we’re going up to Scotland: we’re touring there for two weeks and then in the north of England for a month. After that I’m having a few days holiday with my mum and dad in Newcastle. Then on May 10th I’m going to Liverpool for a few days. I ‘ve got a part in a TVprogramme and we’re filming it up there. I t’s my first TV part.I’m going on holiday in June. Helen and I are going to Italy form June 14th to 28th.We’re staying with Francesca in Tuscany. Would you and Debbie like to come?Francesca says the villa’s huge. If you’d like to join us, could you write to me at myparent s’ address? I hope you can come.2.PG stands for parental guidance. This means that parents take the responsibility forallowing children to see a film with may have some scenes with are really inappropriate for them.3.Globe TheatreThe Globe Theatre was where Shakespeare’s plays were first performed. It wasdestroyed in the 17th Century, but it’s now being rebuilt.4.William Shakespeare is famous for his plays. Many people are interested in his plays. Before the 16th century actors performed in the open air theatres – in the streets or in public squares. Shakespeare acted in the globe theatre and helped to manage it too. The Globe Theatre was in London on the south bank of the river Thames. The theatre was a round theatre. There was a stage in the middle of the theatre. Now just like the Globe Theatre, most theatres have a roof.5.1) Mark Coleman was born in New Zealand but at the moment he is living in Britain. Heis the leading member of the World Bungee Corporation. In his free time he jumps off bridges and hangs upside down with an elastic rope around his ankle. Bungee jumping started on Pentecost Island, near Australia, and a lot of New Zealanders now jumpregularly. ‘It’s frightening at first’ Mark says ‘but it’s very good fun’.2) Robert Haag is a 36-year-old American who is crazy about rocks. The ‘Meteorite Man’collects and sells rocks from space. He lives in the mountains of Arizona but he travels to the Andes mountains in Chile, to the Nile Delta in Egypt or to Australia to collectmeteorites. He has the only piece of moon rock found on earth outside Antarctica, and another piece that comes from Mars. ‘I love the adventures and the places that therocks take me to. Every new rock is a challenge’3) Alison Peterson is a Londoner and works in the City of London, but in her lunch hourshe forgets the world of business “Take out three coloured balls and juggle for an hour every day.” she suggests “I t’s a very relaxing hobby. You can’t think about your problems when you are juggling.”4) I’m standing on a mountain with six other people and we are completely alone. Theworld of heli-skiing is a silence, private one. You don’t walk or queue for a ski lift ; youpay a lot of money and take a helicopter. The helicopter leaves a small group of skiers , with a guide at the top of a mountain and the group skis down through the fresh snow.In Canada people return to the mountain again and again to enjoy the sport. ” I‘m a dentist back home in Toronto” says Mary Grove, one of my companions. ‘and thisprovides the excitement ‘ in my life. I’m having a great time.6.Calling cardsMost British telephone cards are just plain green but card collecting is becoming apopular hobby in Britain and collectors even have their own magazine InternationalTelephone Cards. One reason for their interest is that cards from around the world come in a wide variety of different and often very attractive designs. There are 100,000different cards in Japan alone, and there you can put your own design onto a blank card simply by using a photograph or a business card. The first telephone cards produced in 1976, were Italian. Five years later, the first British card appeared and now you can buy cards in more than a hundred countries. People usually start collecting cards because they are small and light and you do not need much space for them. It’s also a cheap hobby for beginners although for some people itbecomes a serious business. In Paris, for example, there is a market where you can only buy telephone cards, and some French cards cost up to £4,000 and the first Japanese card has a value of about £28,000. Most people only see cards with prices like these in their collectors’ magazine.7.Oh, I hate it. I was five years old, very small and shy. My mother took me in and thereare a lot of other children. Did I cry? Well, I certainly cried when she left and I wasunhappy all day. I felt awful. My parents were worried about moving, but I wasn’t. I was very excited. Of course, when we moved I lost some of my friends and changed schools, but it was an adventure.I felt wonderful on the first day. I was only 15 but I had a job and some money. I didn’twork on schooldays – only on Saturdays. And I sometimes worked in the holidays. Of course, the job was actually quite boring. Did they pay me much money? No, but I loved it. I really did. They taught me at school and I took the test when I was 16. Then my mother lent me her car twice a week. Was I frightened? Well, the first time I drove alone I wasfrightened for about 5 minutes, but then I felt fine.I love my parents but I was very happy to be free. When I left the house with all mysuitcases I thought ‘I’m an adult!’ I went to the airport and caught a plane to Britain. I didn’t know then that I would stay here for so long.8.The four-year-old college studentA child of four is studying at college because he is too intelligent for school. NicholasMacMahon has computer lessons at West London Institute.Nicholas spoke well before he was one. At 18 months he took telephone messages for his parents. At 2 he began to learn French. The strange thing about Nicholas is that he taught himself to read before he could speak.“We knew immediately that he could read. When he could speak, he corrected myspelling.”, said his father. When Nicholas went to school, his teachers gave him pictures to colour and toys to play with. He tried two different schools but he was bored andunhappy and his parents decided that he couldn’t stay there. His teachers did not have time to prepare special lessons for Nicholas. The MacMahons had no idea what to do with him. Then the West London Institute offered to help. Nicholas spends some of his time there and also studies at home. Now he identifies insects by their Latin names. He reads the newspaper every day and he can play the violin well. ‘ We don’t have anysocial life.’ ,Mr. MacMahon says,” Nicholas is our life. He is a clever child, and we want to help him in every way.’9.As well as academic subject to improve students’ minds and prepare them for college, alot of high schools in the United Sates offer vocational courses. These prepare students for particular jobs. At different schools in California, students can learn how to become cooks and waiters in hotels and restaurants or mechanic and salespeople in garages and service stations. They can also train to be secretaries and receptionists. The courses are available to high school students during the day as part of their normal school programme. In the evenings they are also available to other people who are not at the school.Gene Abbott runs a course in automotive repair at San Rafael High School. He teaches his students how to repair cars. He gives some lessons in a classroom, but most of the course takes place in the work shop. It is a practical course, so students learn by doing as well as by studying.10.Fear of flyingHow can anyone like flying? It’s a crazy thing to do. Birds fly, people don’t. I hate flying. You wait for hours for the plane to take off and it’s often late. The plane’s alwayscrowded. You can’t walk around and there’s nothing to do. You can’t open the windows and you can’t get off. The seats are uncomfortable, there’s no choice of food and there are never enough toilets. Then after the plane lands, it’s even worse. It takes hours to get out of the airport and into the city.I prefer travelling by train. Trains are much better than planes: they’re cheaper, saferand more comfortable. You can walk around in a train and open the windows. Stations are more convenient than airports, because you can get on and off in the middle of cities. If you miss a train, you can always catch another one later. Yes, trains are slower, but speed isn’t everything. Staying alive and enjoying yourself is more important.11.Train versus planeA race against timeThe flight time from London to Edinburgh is just under an hour. On a good day, the train from King’s Cross to Waverley takes four hours. End of story? No, not quite. This story begins in Trafalgar Square, central London at 7.30 a.m. It ends in the same place 8 hours30 minutes later.By planeThe first stop is Heathrow Airport by taxi for the nine o’clock plane. The traffic is not bad and we reach Heathrow in 45 minutes. We complete check-in and security checks by 8:30 a.m. A loudspeaker announces a delay of 10 minutes. It’s time for coffee. But at 9:14 our Boeing 757 is leaving the gate. At 9:27 we are in the air and stewardesses are trying to serve a quick free breakfast to a full plane. The plane lands at 10.20 and 10minutes later we are in the airport terminal. There is a coach outside and we reach the centre of Edinburgh in half an hour. It is a short walk to the Scott Monument in Princess Street. It is 11.15.By trainWe leave the monument and walk around the corner to the Waverley Station to catch the Royal Scot. Our first carriage is nearly empty. The train leaves Platform 19 at exactly11.30 and hurries south through the beautiful countryside. Lunch is excellent, but itcosts a lot. We reach King’s Cross 2 minutes early at 3.48 and take a taxi to TrafalgarSquare, arriving at six minutes past four.A standard British Airways single ticket to Edinburgh is £106. The taxi to Heathrow is £30,and the coach fare to Edinburgh city centre is £2.80. A single first class train ticket is £87.A taxi from King’s Cross to Trafalgar Square is £6.70.12.A passenger will step up and tell me which flight they intend to be taking that day –whether they have a ticket or not. If they’ve not got a ticket, I can issue the ticket right there at the ticket counter, re-confirm their itinerary for the round trip, check in their luggage for them, and make sure they are satisfied with their seat selection. The three classes of services we offer are coach class, which is the economy class;business class, which is better than coach class and first class, which is the premiumservice and the best way to travel. Each transaction is really different. Ther e’s never anything that’s um, boring about the job and for the most part the people that I come into contact with are really pleasant, and the people I work with in the airport are really pleasant.13.Niki Taylor is an average healthy all-American schoolkid- except that she is director ofher own company and can earn more money in a day than her teachers earn in a year.At the age of 14 Niki signed a two-year contract with L’Oreal, the cosmetics company, and at 16 she became the youngest model ever to appear on the cover of the fashion magazine Vogue. Today, at 17,she is a multi-millionaire and has her own company Niki inc., to manage her business activities as one of the world’s most popular models. But she wants to stay at high school for a little longer. ‘I want to get my high school diploma so I can go to college when the modelling finishes. Then I can start a different kind of business.’She is already finding it difficult to continue a normal life at home and school because her success is too well-known. Everyone expects her to wear beautiful clothes andmake-up and to eat in expensive restaurants. Sometimes all she wants to do is put on an old pair of jeans and go and eat pizza with her girlfriends. ‘I want to be myself, and not always ‘Niki Taylor – The Model.’”.。
