We’ve reached a strange — some would say unusual — point. While fighting world hunger continues to be the matter of vital importance according to a recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO), more people now die from being overweight, or say, from being extremely fat, than from being underweight. It’s the good life that’s more likely to kill us these days.
Worse still, nearly 18 million children under the age of five around the world are estimated to be overweight. What’s going on?
We really don’t hav e many excuses for our weight problems. The dangers of the problem have been drilled into us by public–health campaigns since 2001 and the message is getting through — up to a point.
In the 1970s, Finland, for example, had the highest rate of heart disease in the world and being overweight was its main cause. Not any more. A
public–health campaign has greatly reduced the number of heart disease deaths by 80 percent over the past three decades.
Maybe that explains why the percentage of people in Finland taking diet pills doubled between 2001 and 2005, and doctors even offer surgery of removing fat inside and change the shape of the body. That has become a sort of fashion. No wonder it ranks as the world’s most body–conscious country.
We know what we should be doing to lose weight — but actually doing it is another matter. By far the most popular excuse is not taking enough exercise. More than half of us admit we lack willpower. Others blame good food. They say: it’s just too inviting and it makes them overeat. Still others lay the blame on the Americans, complaining that pounds have piled on thanks to eating too much American–style fast food.
Some also blame their parents — their genes. But unfortunately, the parents are wronged because they’re normal in shap e, or rather slim.
It’s a similar story around the world, although people are relatively unlikely to have tried to lose weight. Parents are eager to see their kids shape up. Do as I say — not as I do.
24. What’s the “strange” point mentioned in the first sentence?
A. Overweight issue remains unresolved despite WHO’s efforts.
B. Starvation is taking more people’s lives in the world.
C. WHO report shows people’s unawareness of food safety.
D. The good life is a greater risk than the bad life.
25. Why does the author think that people have no excuse for being overweight?
A. A lot of effective diet pills are available.
B. Body image has nothing to do with good food.
C. They have been made fully aware of its dangers.
D. There are too many overweight people in the world.
26. The example of Finland is used to illustrate _______.
A. the cause of heart disease
B. the effectiveness of a campaign
C. there are too many overweight people in the world
D. the fashion of body shaping
27. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Actions or Excuses
B. Overweight or Underweight
C. WHO in a Dilemma
D. No Longer Dying of Hunger

You may not have heard of Ashoka, but for the past 27years,this association, founded by Bill Drayton, has fought poverty and sickness, promoted education and encouraged small businesses. To support these worthy causes,Ashoka provides money for the world's most promising"changemakers"seeking to solve urgent problems and would like to create a world in which every citizen is a changemaker.
Drayton believes that anyone can become an agent for change. The important thing is to simply give yourself permission. If you see a problem that you care about, you can help solve it.The young in particular are willing to accept this concept because at heart every child wants to grow into a happy, healthy, contributing adult. In fact it is many young people's ambition to set up programmes or businesses that improve social conditions. An excellent example is an Ashoka project started in 1995 in Dhaka, which handled the rubbish problem facing the city, helped local farmers and provided an income for poor people there.
When Masqsood and Iftekhar began to study the problem of all the uncollected rubbish that lay in Dhaka's streets,Attracting tats and disease, they discovered that 80% of it was natural waste. So they educated the poor people in the city to compost (把…制成堆粪)this waste. They kmew that they would have a market for the end product because local farmers were struggling with chemical ferntilisers (化肥)which were expensive and had reduced the natural minerals in the soil over the years. At first, they were refused, but once they were able to persuade them that there was money to be made, the project took off.In 2009sales were $14,000.
Drayton is optimistic that in ten years Ashoka will be making really serious, practical progress in bringing about social change by changing the way we look at economic development.

Researchers in China and the United States have developed a new cataract(白内障)treatment with cells that has restored vision in babies in a trial and may eventually be used in adults.
The treatment- by doctors and staff members at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Sichuan and Sun Yat-sen universities in China-was published in March 9 edition of the scientific journal Nature.
A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens(晶体)of an eye. Typical cataract operation involves the removal of the cloudy lens and the insertion of an artificial one. The new operation has been tested in animals and during a small, human trial. It resulted in fewer complications(并发症)than the current harmful operation, and in regrown lenses with superior visual function in all 12 of the baby cataract patients who received the procedure.
A congenital cataract- lens clouding that occurs at birth or shortly after- is important cause of blindness in children. In the new research, Kand Zhang, head of ophthalmic genetics at US San Diego’s Shiley Eye Institute, and his colleagues relied on the regrown potential of endogenous(同源的)stem cells.
According to Zhang, endogenous stem cells are different from other stem cells that are typically grown in a laboratory, transplanted into a patient, and can have risks of immune(免疫的)rejection, infection or cancers. Zhang told CBS News, “We invented a new operation to make a very smal l opening at the side of a cataractous lens bag, remove the cataract inside, allow the opening to heal, and promote potential lens stem cells to regrow an entirely new lens with vision.”
The human trial involved 12 babies under the age of 2 who were treated with the new method, while 25 babies received thee standard operation care.. The latter group experienced a higher incidence of pos- operation danger, early- onset eye high blood pressure and increased lens clouding. The scientists reported fewer complications and faster healing among the 12 babies who has the new procedure.
32. What is the text mainly about?
A. The concept of the cataract
B. A new cataract treatment with stem cells
C. Bad effects of post-operation in the cataract
D. The reasons why the cataract comes into being
33. Which of the following best describe the new cataract treatment according to the passage?
A. Convenient
B. Comfortable
C. Cheap
D. Safe
34. What can we learn about the new cataract treatment?
A. It has more risks
B. It may be used widely
C. It has been put into practice widely
D. It can only restore vision in babies
35. What does the underlined word “congenital” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. Born
B. Strange
C. Serious
D. Dangerous.

We took a 20-kilometer hike on last Friday, and it has been one of the most unforgettable experience since high school.
Early in the morning, we get together and set out on foot. All of us carried our backpacks without water and food. At the beginning, we enjoyed the beautiful scenery and had great time. Gradually we started to sweat a lot. Some of us became out of breath and some fell behind, and we encouraged each other to keep going. We kept on walking and walking. We almost made it to school while one of my classmates fell down. All of us ran up to help her, having no time to attend to our tiredness. After another hour, we finally managed to walk back to school. We were so pleased and proud, cheering and hug each other. We took photos to record the exciting moment.
What an unforgettable experience! It’s much than a hike; it’s a journey of hard work and challenges, in that we’ve learnt to be more determined and strong-minded.

Monolog 10
Look at this picture. It’s the London Tea Trade centre. As you can see, it is on the North Bank of the River Thames. It is the center of an important industry in the everyday life of the British people. Tea is the British national drink.
Every man, woman and child over ten years of age, has an average over four cups a day, or some one thousand five hundred cups annually. About 30 percent of the world’s export of tea makes its way to London. And Britain is by far the largest importer of tea in the world.
Now in the second picture, you can see how tea is tasted in the Tea Trade Centre before it is sold. Here, different types of tea are tasted by skilled tea-tasters before they are sold at each week’s tea sale. It’s amazing to see them at work! Over a hundred kinds of tea are laid out in a line on a long table.
The tasters generally taste tea with milk, since that is how the majority of British people drink their tea. The tasters move down the line with surprising speed, tasting from a spoon and deciding what is a fair price for each tea.
After that, they… .
