Blanche Caffiere, a very kind librarian I‟ve never written about publicly before, had a huge influence on me.
Mrs. Caffiere died in 2006, shortly after reaching her 100th birthday. Before she passed away, I had a chance to thank her for the important role she played in my life. She inspired my interest in learning at a time when I easily could have gotten turned off by school.
When I first met Mrs. Caffiere in our school library, I was a shy fourth grader, desperately trying to go unnoticed because sometimes I would speak to myself and I always made a mess of the desk. And I was trying to hide the fact that I liked to read something cool for girls but not for boys.
Mrs. Caffiere helped make it okay for me to be a messy boy who was reading lots of books. She pulled me out of my shell(壳) by sharing her love of books and finding me a lot of books I was interested in. Once I‟d read them, she‟d make the time to discuss them with me. Through those book conve rsations in the library we became good friends.
Looking back on it now, I find there‟s no question that my time with Mrs. Caffiere helped light my interest in
libraries and my focus on helping every child in America get the benefit of great teachers. I give some credit to Mrs. Caffiere, without whose help I wouldn‟t have realized what I was good at when I was nin e years old. It‟s remarkable how much power one good person can have in shaping the life of a child.
25. What does the author mean by “I easily cou ld have gotten turned off” in Paragraph 2?
A. He was likely to be dismissed.
B. The school didn‟t like him.
C. He would spend more time at school.
D. The school had more effects on him.
26. What made the author try to avoid being noticed in the library?
A. His shabby clothing.
B. His nature-born shyness.
C. His improper behaviors.
D. His preference for reading.
27. What did Mrs. Caffiere do for the author?
A. She guided him to be a man of kindness.
B. She showed him how to be a neat boy.
C. She shared her love of looks online with him.
D. She helped him become aware of his strengths.

A group of geologists(地质学者) believe New Zealand and several surrounding islands, including New Caledonia, should be reclassified as part of an eighth continent called Zealandia. The archipelago, or group of islands, is presently grouped with Australia in the Australasia area. But scientists think there is enough evidence to give New Zealand its own continent name.
The islands are connected by submerged continental crust(地壳). That crust is separate and distinct from Australia and Antarctica. About 94% of that 1.9 million-square-mile land mass is underwater. Still‟ the geologists argue that the area should count as its own continent, “Zealandia shows that the large and obvious in natural science can be overlooked,” researchers wrote in their study of th e area. Called Zealandia: Earth‟s Hidden Continent, it was published in the Geological Society o f America‟s journal , GSA Today.
The geologists come from New Zealand, New Caledonia, and the cities of Melbourne and Sydney, in Australia. They spent two decades gathering enough data to make the case for Zealandia.
They argue that if Earth‟s surface were mapped the way other planets have been—that is, without vast oceans to cover landforms-Zealandia would long ago have been recognized as a continent. “If we could pull the plug on the oceans, it would be clear to everyone that we have mountain chains and a big high-standing continent above the ocean crust,” Nick Mo rtimer told the news agency Reuters. He is a geologist for the New Zealand government and the study‟s leading author,
The conclusion of the study makes a si milar point. ……Based on various lines of geological and geophysical evidence, particularly those acc umulated in the last two decades,”it states, “…Zealandia is not a collection of partly submerged continental pieces but is a consistent continent.”
28. What have the geologists found about New Zealand?
A. It is known to Australia.
B. It is a part of Australia.
C. It is an independent continent.
D. Its structure is the same as Australia‟s.
29. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “submerged” in Paragraph 2?
A. Unique.
B. Present.
C. Huge.
D. Underwater.
30. Why did the geologists spend many years collecting data?
A. To try to prove Zealandia.
B. To research Zealandia‟s history.
C. To discover how Zealandia formed.
D. To find islands around New Zealand.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Crust of New Zealand
B. A 8th Continent—Zealandia
C, How a New Continent Was Formed
D. The Importance of the Geologists‟ Rcsearch
