Ⅴ.阅读理解
What happens when a big meat eater is removed from its home? What happens when it comes back? The answers became clear in Yellowstone National Park, the oldest national park in the United States.
The story began more than 100 years ago, when most people wanted to kill off all wolves, for many reasons.Ranchers (农场经营者) were angry that wolves killed some of their sheep and cattle。

Park visitors loved to see deer, and wolves hunted them, too. At the time, people thought that wolves would eat humans. So people began to exterminate wolves throughout North America. In 1926,the last wolf in Yellowstone was killed。

Once the wolves were gone, mysterious changes began to happen in the park。

Trees began to die。

Fewer birds nested in the park。

Beavers (河狸) left to find new places to live.More and more wildlife disappeared.
Wildlife biologists realized that wolves had been important to the park。

One winter morning in 1995,the first of several wolves was set free in the park。

But a lot had changed in Yellowstone。

Could the wolves survive there?
Naturalist Jim Garry remembers leading a class of wolf watchers when they heard their first wolf.“We never saw the wolf, only heard a howl (嚎叫).Our hair stood on end。

Our frozen smiles widened。

Silently we put our thumbs up in a universal sign of success!”
Now songbirds have returned to the park。

In the trees, the birds can hide, find insects to eat,and build nests.Tall trees act like big beach umbrellas over streams. As the trees came back,so did the beavers.
Not everyone agrees that wolves should travel free. After all, some wolves still take ranchers’sheep and cattle. But today we know the wolf plays an important role. The
wolf is a keystone animal-an animal that many others depend on for their survival。
