It was a hot, humid summer day. I had just 41 the local gas station to fill my tank. After pumping the gas, I started to walk inside to pay. That is when I 42 them. Two elderly women were standing back from their car. There was a mixture of shock and 43 on their faces. I looked and saw it: five wasps (黄蜂) building a nest around their gas cap. My eyes 44 . I shared the ladies’ fear.
Wasps had never been 45 of mine. Several times they had attacked me while I was cutting grass, giving me multiple stings each time I 46 them. Mom would have to run a cold 47 and put me in it to 48 the pain and itching. She would next give me medicine to fight all the 49 in my body from the attacks.
50 , I knew I had to do something. I reached into my back pocket for a paper towel, tore out the 51 and stepped on it while the 52 wasps buzzed around me. The ladies thanked me, and I smiled, feeling warm within.
In this life, you can’t let the fear of being stung either physically or emotionally keep you from doing what is 53 . The world needs us to share our 54 to change it for the better, and you’ll be rewarded with 55 .

When I entered high school, our teacher told us that we should do some volunteer work to enrich our school life and prepare us for university. 41 hearing this, I got excited and hoped that I would take part in this valuable activity. I 42 to be a volunteer at Yeda Hospital, one of the biggest and busiest hospitals in our city. Fortunately, I was accepted! Joy 43 over me.
At around 7:30am, all the volunteers gathered. I was overwhelmed with excitement as I entered the hospital. We were 44 by the hospital staff, and I was chosen to be in charge of self-service 45 machines, which are designed for people to buy medicine and instantly pay their hospital bills.
V olunteering from 7:30am until 8:30am in the hospital made me very 46 . However, most of the people in the hospital had worried faces, and I seldom 47 a smile. It was disappointing, but I tried to understand. They might have been 48 taking care of patients. I just concentrated on my 49 task, helping plenty of people---especially the older ones who were not used to advanced technology. As time went by, I felt 50 and bored. Suddenly, my friend and I noticed a foreigner standing next to the 51 . I offered to help with my big smile, and all of a sudden, the foreigner thanked me. At first, I couldn’t understand why my smile was such a big 52 to her until I learned that her husband had been in hospital for quite some time. She said that my smile lit up the hospital and 53 gave her a ray of hope, particularly to patients like her husband. I smiled and told her that everything would be fine. She was teary-eyed as she went back. I didn’t expect that a 54 smile could have such magical power.
That moment really touched me. Please don’t be 55 about showing your smile to others, even strangers. Your unintended smile can warm the world.

I was deeply moved by the kindness of an elderly flower seller at Sydney’s Central Station one evening.
I was feeling as cold as the chill winds 41 the steps of the workers who buried hands deep into coat pockets. In many ways, 2018 had proven a 42 year. My teenage daughter had left home for university, my job of 23 years was no more, and a creative project I’d given my all to for years had also been 43 called off. I also found out a person who I’d thought was a friend was 44 it.
A year earlier, I’d dreamt about an earthquake. In the dream, a red light flashed inside a building and then the earth began to 45 . Walls collapsed and pieces of brick rained down on me as I ran into the open, feeling 46 for the people I hadn’t loved enough. 47 I was buried completely by the falling world, I stretched out my hands and 48 , “Abuelo, ayudame,” in my native Spanish. “Grandfather, help me!”
Now, with the very real aftershocks of a number of 49 endings, I walked into a little flower shop to buy a gift for a friend. The gentleman at the checkout looked at me and 50 for a moment, returning with a fragrant flower. “For you. You need to smile today,” he said in a
me the flower with eyes full of care. It took all my strength not to 52 tears. Then he 53 me in a grandfatherly hug that made me want to tell him everything. 54 , I just thanked him and headed for the train. How did he know? I wondered. For the first time in weeks, I felt 55 .

Angela Pozzi didn’t like seeing plastic rubbish washing up on the shore near her home in Bandon, Oregon. So she started an organization and called it Washed Ashore: 41to Save the Sea.
Here’s how it works: Volunteers help clean up Oregon’s 300 miles of 42 . Then, 43 only plastics from the beach cleanup, Ms. Pozzi and her staff and volunteers create sculptures of sea animals.
In the sculptures, viewers can see what each piece was 44 it became part of the artwork. They know that every bit--comb, plastic boot, bottle cap, bottle or 45 --was found on a beach.
Plastics, unlike wood, cotton, and other 46 materials, don’t 47 into anything useful to other living things. 48 , they stay for years in the oceans. Some sea animals eat plastic objects that look like food. Others are 49 in plastic nets or packaging.
Ms. Pozzi says, “I want to create sculptures that make people take a look and think, ‘ 50 come there can be this much trash on the beach?’ 51 , the Washed Ashore sculptures will make people 52 their plastic purchases and be aware of how much they should pay for them in the end.”
Surprisingly, one of the Washed Ashore’s sculptures, Turtle Ocean, received a 53 honor. It was 54 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. Ms. Pozzi says, “Until we run out of 55 on the beach, the work will continue.”

One of the most powerful forces of nature is motherly love. It is found not just in humans but is 41 among many other types of creatures.

The baby, who had been 46 by her mother, was later taken to hospital with only minor 47 .
An animal's maternal(母性的)instinct can be so strong that the mother will often 48 her own life to save her young.
