The common cold is the world’s most widespread illness, which is probably why there are more myths(,想象) about it than any of the other illnesses.
The most widespread mistake of all is that colds are caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one.If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not.And in isolated Arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected(感染的) people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes .At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in Experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be doused(浸入) with cold water, and then stood about dripping(滴干) wet in drafty(通风的) rooms. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose .
If cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter? In spite of the most painstaking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on .
No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors such as aspirin, but all they do is to relieve the symptoms(症状).

Eating a diet high in processed food increases the risk of depression, research suggests. What's more, people who ate plenty of vegetables, fruit and fish actually had a lower risk of depression, the University College London team found.
Data on diet among 3,500 middleaged civil servants were compared with their emotional state five years later, a British journal reported. They divided the participants into two types of diet—those who ate a diet largely based on whole food, which includes lots of fruit, vegetables and fish, and those who ate a mainly processed food diet, such as sweetened desserts, fried food, processed meat, refined grains and highfat dairy products. After accounting for factors such as gender, age, education, physical activity, smoking habits and chronic (慢性的) diseases, they found a significant difference in the future depression risk with the different diets. Those who ate the most wholefood had a 26% lower risk of future depression than those who ate the least wholefood. By contrast, people with a diet high in processed food had a 58% higher risk of depression than those who ate a diet low in processed foods.
Study author Dr. Archana SinghManoux pointed out there was a chance the finding could be explained by a lifestyle factor they had not accounted for.
There was a paper showing a Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower risk of depression, but the problem with that is if you live in Britain, the possibility of you eating a Mediterranean diet is not very high.
Dr. Andrew McCulloch, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said, This study adds to an existing body of solid research that shows the strong links between what we eat and our mental health.
He added people's diets were becoming increasingly unhealthy. The UK population is consuming less nutritious, fresh produce and more saturated (含饱和脂肪酸的) fats and sugars.

B. They have been eating a less healthy diet these years.
C. Most of them prefer wholefood to processed food.
D. Those who ate wholefood generally were happier in the long term.
51. What can we learn from what Dr. Archana Singh Manoux said?
A. It is difficult for most British people to have a Mediterranean diet.
B. The Mediterranean diet is the most healthy in the world.
C. Many studies have been done on the Mediterranean diet before.
D. The Mediterranean diet is not good for depression.

I have a friend named Monty Roberts. He has let me use his horse ranch (养马场) to put on events to raise money for Youth-at-Risk Programs.
Last time I was there he introduced me by saying, "I want to tell you why I let you use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of a horse trainer. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be when he grew up."
“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of owning a horse ranch someday. He put all his heart into the project and wrote about his dream in great detail. He even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of the buildings, stables and the track, and even a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house on it.”
“The next day, he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later, he received a large red ‘F' on his paper with a note, ‘See me after class.' The boy went to see the teacher and asked why. The teacher told him there was no way for a young boy like him to do that because owning a horse ranch required much money and resources, and then added ‘If you’ll rewrite his paper with another goal, I will reconsider your grade.’”
“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what to do. His father said, ‘Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it’s a very important decision for you.’”
“Finally, a week later, the boy turned in the same paper without any change and stated, ‘You can keep the F, and I will never .’”
“I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper over the fireplace.”
"Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what."
53.The teacher gave the boy an “F” because the teacher thought .
A.he didn’t do a good job in his studies

Go back to Stone Age
Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized countries. They insisted that people should eat more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living in Stone Age—in other words, we should eat what our ancestors ate. 56
The scientists say that the human life has changed greatly. In many countries, people’s diet has changed, generally with increases in consumption of meat, dairy(乳品) products, vegetable oils, and fruit juice, and decreases in consumption of starchy(含淀粉的) foods such as bread, potatoes, and rice. 57 All of these have led to new kinds of sicknesses, which were not known in ancient times. They are called “diseases of civilization”. Many cancers and diseases of the blood system are examples of such diseases.
58 They enjoyed very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none. They hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic ones. They ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruits. They did not have m ilk or any other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains. 59 But today, many of us enjoy eating some kinds of food which do harm to our bodies. For example, we eat six times more salt than our zncestors and we eat more sugar as well. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein(蛋白质) and much less vitamin C.
60 But the scientists say that we would be much healthier if we ate much the same way the ancient people did, cutting the amount of fat, salty and sweet food.
A. All of these were the major factors thought to keep ancient people healthy.
B. Modern people are trying to gain knowledge of “diseases of civilization”.
C. A lack of exercise increases the risk of developing certain diseases.
D. Nowadays people probably don’t want to live like our ancestors.
E. However, people living in Stone Age lived a quite different life.
F. Besides, there have been large reductions in physical activity.
G. In that case, we would live a much healthier life.
