When Denis Hennequin took over as the European boss of McDonald', the world?s biggest restaurant chain was showing signs of recovery in America and Australia, but sales in Europe were declining. One exception was France, where Mr Hennequin had done a sterling job as head of the group's French branch. So far he is doing well.
Mr Hennequin?s secret for recovery is to be “locally relevant”, and to improve the experience of visiting all the restaurants. McDonald's is blamed for making people fat, exploiting (剥削)workers, treating animals cruelly, polluting the environment and simply for being American. Mr Hennequin says he wants to face the public to address these concerns.
He introduced “open door” visitor days which became hugely popular. In Poland alone some 50,000 visitors came to McDonald's through the visitors? program last year. The Nutrition
Information Program, launched last year, put detailed labels on McDonald's packaging with data on calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates(碳水化合物)and salt content.
Mr Hennequin also wants people to know that “McJobs”, the low-paid jobs are much better than people think. But some of his efforts have the opposite effect: he introduced
“McPassport” that allows McDonald's employees to work anywhere in the European Union. Politicians accused the firm of a ploy(策略)to make cheap labour from Eastern Europe more easily available to McDonald's across the continent.
To stay in touch with local needs and preferences, McDonald's employs local managers and buys mainly from local suppliers. Four-fifths of its supplies in France come from local farmers, for example. Some of the French farmers who once campaigned against the company subsequently discovered that it was, in fact, buying their produce. And it hires celebrities such as Heidi Klum, a German model, as local brand ambassadors(代言人).
In h is previous job Mr Hennequin established a “design studio” in France to decorate his company?s dull restaurants and adapt the inside to local tastes. He also set up a “food studio, where cooks invent new menus in response to local trends.
He is already being promoted as the first European candidate for the group?s top job in Illinois due to his contributions to the company.

Fashion of the future will not just be aboutthe length of skirts or the width of trousers.Fashion will team up with technology andthe result will be something that we mayfind difficult to imagine at present.
Many companies are already puttingfashion and technology togethercalled …wearable technology?.One company has produced a jacket witha built-in minidisc player. Using fabrics filledwith various metals, they are working onproducing clothing that is soft to the touchand can change shape according to thetemperature.
It is not just clothing that is becomingtechnical. Designers are also trying to findnew ways to fit clothes. One fashiontechnology company has already createdthe world?s first pair of perfectly fitted jeans. The customer stands in a blackchanging room while a light flashes overthe body for eight seconds. The exact bodymeasurements are scanned. A pair of perfectly fitted jeansarrives within two weeks.

As if in-laws, bosses, and religion didn?t provide enough guilt(愧疚)to last a lifetime, these days we?re beating ourselves up for formerly mindless action like throwing a coke can into the garbage. "Green guilt" is the latest type of self-punishment. A Yale survey found that men and women are definitely anxious about the Earth's suffering.
Here is the thing—and it may come as a surprise: There's nothing wrong with guilt. "It holds society together," says David, assistant professor of psychology at New York University. "Without it, people wouldn?t be motivated to maintain standards ofsocial behaviour and it?s guilt that often drives us to change behaviors and take action.” "We spend so much time trying to be guilt-free," says June Tangney, professor of psychology at George Mason University, "and that?s a mistake."
The guilt we all know and don?t love, however—the consumingkind—comes from not taking action. With green guilt, the cure is easy: Take small actions to help the environment (a reusable cloth grocery bag here, recycled paper there).
Remember: You personally did not cause global warming, and shouldn?t feel responsible for fixing it. "Ask yourself, 'What are reasonable goals for me, knowing that I can?t take care of everybody and everything?'" says Tangney. "Once you translate the most important things into practical plans, you?ll feel a lifting of some of this moral weight."
Daniel Esty, director of the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy conducting the survey, emphasizes that small adjustments make a big difference. "A few 'supergreens' will go through their homes and throw every incandescent bulb(白炽灯泡)," he says, "but for most people the right answer is, when the light burns out, put in an energy-saving bulb. It's simple, it?s cost-effective, and you?re not wasting things before the end of their useful lives." And do what you can, he says, on big issues like getting greenhouse gas emissions down—for instance, biking or carpooling(拼车)to work once a week. As everyone takes a step in that direction, we?ll all make a lot of progress." If the guilt starts to rise, Esty adds, just remind yourself: No one?s perfect.
32. According to the passage, which of the following people may be regarded as “Green guilt”?
A. People who care little about the environment.
B. People who maintain standards ofsocial behaviour.
C. People who feel responsible for the global warming.
D. People who mindlessly throw a coke can into the garbage.
33. What can we infer from Tangney?s point of view?
A. Spending so much time trying to be guilt-free is a mistake.
B. Carrying out practical plans will add to your moral weight.
C. Taking care of everybody and everything is none of your business.
D. Every little bit helps when achieving your environment-
friendly goal.
34. The author mentions'supergreens' in order to____________.
A. challenge Tangney?s point of view
B. make a comparison and give instructions
C. point out the wrong behaviour of'supergreens'
D. emphasizethe advantage of energy-saving bulbs
35. What is the author?s ma in purpose in writing the passage?
A. To show the importance of going green.
B. To instruct the public to get over"Green guilt".
C. To warn the public of the dangers of "Green guilt".
D. To blame the public for overprotecting theenvironment.

Cities are exciting and wonderful places to live. I have always enjoyed live in them, as there is so many to do and see. There are museums, cinemas, theatres, art gallery, parks, coffee bars, clubs and many other of places where people can meet and exchange ideas. And there are times that I need the peace and quiet of the countryside.
Cities are interested, and they can be beautiful, but they are never beautiful in the way that the countryside is beautiful. By this I meant that they do not have the beauty of nature, trees and hills, lakes and streams.
I love cities, but sometime I need to get out into the countryside. I think that there are many people who feel same way.
