阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、和D项中选出最佳选项。

A
A Full-Time School Called Life
You are enrolled in a full-time school called “life”. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or hate them, but you have designed them as part of your curriculum.
Why are you here? What is your purpose? Humans have sought to discover the meaning of life for a very long time. What we and our ancestors have to overlook, however, is that there is no answer. The meaning of life is different for every individual.
Each person has his or her own purpose and distinct path, unique and separate from anyone else’s. As you travel your life path, you will be presented with numerous lessons that you will need to learn in order to fulfill that purpose. The lessons you are presented with are specific to you; learning these lessons is the key to discovering and fulfilling the meaning and connection of your own life.
As you travel through your lifetime, you may encounter challenging lessons that others don’t have to face, while others spend years struggling with challenges that you don’t need to deal with. You may never know why you are blessed with a wonderful marriage, while your friends suffer through bitter arguments and painful divorces, just as you cannot be sure why you struggle financially while your peers enjoy abundance. The only thing you can count on for certain is that you will be presented with all the lessons that you specifically need to learn; whether you choose to learn them or not is entirely up to you.
The challenge here, therefore, is to keep yourself up with your own unique path by learning individual lessons. This is one of the most difficult challenges you will be faced with in your
li fetime, as sometimes your path will be radically different from others. But remember don’t compare your path to the people’s around you and focus on the disparity between their lessons and yours. You need to remember that you will only be faced with lessons that you are capable of learning and are specific to your own growth.
Our sense of fairness is the expectation of equity—the assumption that all things are equal and that justice will always prevail. Life is not, in fact, fair, and you may indeed have a more difficult lift path than others around you, deserved or not. Everyone’s circumstances are unique, and everyone needs to handle his or her own circumstances differently. If you want to move toward calm, you will be required to move out of the comparing yourself with others rather than appreciating your own special uniqueness. You miss out on learning your individual lessons by distracting yourself from feelings of bitterness and anger.

Barack Obama, Lady Gaga and Steve Jobs—what do they have in common? They are, of course, all Americans. And according to a survey by social networking site badoo.
com, they all best illustrate(举例说明) the word “cool”.
But just what does it mean to say someone is “cool”? Mo st would answer that
it is something to do with being independent-minded and not following the crowd.
Yale University art professor Robert Farris Thompson says that the term
“cool” goes back to 15th century West African philosophy(哲学). “Cool” relates
to ideas of grace(优雅) under pressure.
“In Africa, ” he writes, “coolness is a positive quality which combines calmness, silence, and life. ”
The modern idea of “cool” developed largely in the US in the period after World War Ⅱ. “Post-war ‘cool’ was in part an expression of war-weariness. . . it went against the strict social rules of the time, ” write sociologists Dick Pountain and David Robins in Cool Rules:Anatomy of an Attitude.
But it was the American actor James Dean who became the symbol for “cool” in the hugely successful 1955 movie Rebel without a Cause. Dean plays a tough guy who disobeys his parents and the authorities. He always gets the girl, smokes cigarettes, wears a leather jacket and beats up bullies(欺凌弱小者). In the movie, Dean showed what “cool” would mean to American young people for the next 60years.
Today the focus of “cool” has changed to athletics stars. Often in movies about schools, students gain popularity on the athletics field more than in the classroom. This can be seen quite clearly in movies like Varsity Blues and John Tucker Must Die.
But many teenagers also think being smart is cool. Chess and other thinking games have been becoming more popular in schools.
“Call it the Harry Pot terization of America—a time when being smart is the new cool, ” writes journalist Joe Sunnen.

Last night's meteor(流星)shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers. According to Gabe Rothschild, Emerald Valley's mayor, people gathered in the suburbs of the city, carrying heavy telescopes, expecting to watch the brightly burning meteors passing through the sky. What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city's lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead.
“My family was so frustrated,” admitted town resident Duane Cosby.“We wanted to make this an unforgettable family outing, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment.”
Astronomers—scientists who study stars and planets—have been complaining about this problem for decades. They say that light pollution prevents them from seeing objects in the sky that they could see quite easily in the past. They call on people and the government to take measures to fight against it.
There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. This population consists of birds, bats, frogs, snakes, etc. For example, outdoor lighting severely affects migrating (迁徙的)birds. According to the International Dar-Sky Association,“100 million birds a year throughout North America die in cr ashes with lighted buildings and towers.”
Countless more animal casualties(伤亡) result from the use of artificial lighting. Clearly, people enjoy the benefits of lighting their evenings, but some scientists think it can be harmful for humans, too. They worry that exposure to light while sleeping can increase a person's chances of getting cancer.
Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of light pollution. For years, Flagstaff, Arizona, has enforced lighting regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory. Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is underway to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them, so that other creatures can share the night.
41.It happened last night that ________.
A. the city's lights affected the meteor watching
B.the meteors flew past before being noticed
C.the city light show attracted many people
D.the meteor watching ended up a social outing
42.What do the astronomers complain about?
A.Meteor showers occur less often than before.
B.Their observation equipment is in poor repair.
C.Light pollution has remained unsolved for years.
D.Their eyesight is failing due to artificial lighting.
43.What is the author concerned about according to Paragraph 4?
A. Birds may take other migration paths.
B.Animals' living habits may change suddenly.
C.Varieties of animals will become sharply reduced.
D.Animals' survival is threatened by outdoor lighting.
44.Lighting regulations in Flagstaff, Arizona are put into effect to________.
A.lessen the chance of getting cancer
B.create an ideal observation condition
C.ensure citizens a good sleep at night
D.enable all creatures to live in harmony
45.What message does the author most want to give us?
A.Saving wildlife is saving ourselves.
B.Great efforts should be made to save energy.
C.Human activities should be environmentally friendly.
D.New equipment should be introduced for space study.

第二节读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

No wonder English poses (构成) such a challenge to non-native speakers. This most global of languages has more words than any other, over 1 million according to the Global Language Monitor. Out of this number, the average American college student has mastered between 8, 000—15, 000.
Realizing that words are the building blocks of language, many Chinese students try hard to catch up. They make out long lists of words—often in alphabetical order—and simply memorize their definitions(释义) and Chinese meanings.
The bad news is that definition memorization does them little good when it comes to college entrance tests like the SATs. For these tests, a student needs to understand, not simply parrot words studied.
The good news is that there are better ways to build an academic English vocabulary. One of them is:
V ocabulary learning system
The first thing to do is to develop an organized, but easy means of collecting and learning new words. We recommend a card system that includes the following information: Word-Simple Definition in English--Phrase or Sentence-Related Words-Synonyms (同义词) and Antonyms (反义词) - with a Chinese translation on the reverse (背面) of the card.
The advantage of this system is that with a single card, a student can learn not just one word but a group of related words.
Keep your cards on a detachable (可分离的) metal ring, so you can carry them around and add to your collection daily.
【写作内容】
1. 以约30个词概括以上短文的主要内容;
2. 然后以约120个词以“有什么记单词的好办法? ”为主题写一篇短文,并包括如下要点:1)举例说明你的英语老师教给你某种记忆单词的好方法;
2)说明好的记忆单词方法的重要性;
3)为应对高考你将如何加强单词记忆?
【写作要求】
1. 你可以使用实例或其他论述方法支持你的论点,也可以参照阅读材料的内容,但不得直接引用阅读材料中的句子;
2. 作文中不能出现真实姓名和学校名称。

【评分标准】概括准确,语言规范,内容合适,语篇连贯。

基础写作
In order that we can make the best of learning materials, the Students’ Union of our school is arranging an activity. We students of Senior Three are called on to give away our used books, newspapers or magazines to the students in the lower grades. The idea, which is intended for promoting friendship and encouraging economy, is highly praised and supported by the teachers and students alike. The activity will last about ten days, from June 10 to 20. As a student, I am strongly for the activity because it is very meaningful and helpful.
读写任务
In the passage the author tells us some bad and poor ways of memorizing English vocabulary and advises a vocabulary learning system, which enables students to learn a group of related words.
Since I entered school, my teachers have told me a lot of methods of memorizing English vocabulary. Association is a method with which we can think about a word from one to another. For example we want to memorize the word “tree”, do not remember t-r-e-e so far. We should
enlarge it to the following: stick, branch, trunk, stem, leaf, shoot, root, in the tree, on the tree, pine tree, apple tree, etc.. By this means, we can associate many separate words and expressions, and the result will be much better.
If we have mastered good methods of learning English words, we can enlarge a greater number of them by using less time, and thus get twice the result with half the effort. We can also improve the learning efficiency.
As a senior 3 student, in order to cope with the college entrance exam, I need to strengthen the memorization of English vocabulary since we can easily forget what we have learned. I will try to use all sorts of methods to help myself to memorize all the required vocabulary. Only in this way can I get a high mark in the college entrance exam.
