某某裕华区2016高考英语阅读类一轮练习(9)
阅读理解。
阅读下列短文, 从给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D) 中, 选出最佳选项。
The Arctic is a polar region. It surrounds the North Pole.
Like Antarctica, the Arctic is a land of ice and snow.Antarctica holds the record for a low temperature reading 125 degrees Fahrenheit below zero.Reading of 85 degrees below zero are mon in both the Arctic and Antarctica.Winter temperatures average 30 degrees below zero in the Arctic. At the South Pole the winter average is about 73 degrees below zero.
One thing alone makes it almost impossible for men to live in Antarctica and in parts of the Arctic. This one thing is the low temperature—the killing chill of the far North and the polar South.
To survive, men must wear the warmest possible clothing. They must build windproof shelters. They must keep heaters going at all times. Not even for a moment can they be unprotected against the belowzero temperatures.
Men have a way of providing for themselves.Polar explorers wrap themselves in warm coats and furs. The cold makes life difficult, but the explorers can stay alive. What about animals? Can they survive?Do we find plants?Do we find life in the Arctic and in Antarctica?Yes,we do.There is life in the oceans. There is life on land. Antarctica,as we have seen,is a cold place indeed. But this has not always been the case.Expedition scientists have discovered that Antarctica has not always been a frozen continent. At one time the weather in Antarctica may have been much like our own. Explorers have discovered coal in Antarctica. This leads them to believe that Antarctica at one time was a land of swamps and forests.Heat and moisture must have kept the trees in the forests alive.

社会生活类阅读理解。
To err is human. To blame the other guy is even more human.
mon sense is not all that mon.
Why tell the truth when you can e up with a good excuse?
These three popular misquotes (戏谑的引语) are meant to be jokes, and yet they tell us a lot about human nature. To err, or to make mistakes, is indeed a part of being human, but it seems that most people don’t want to accept the responsibility for having
made a mistake. They naturally look for someone else who could be responsible for the problem. Perhaps it is the natural thing to do. The original quote about human nature went like this:“To err is human, to forgive, divine (神圣的).” This saying mirrors an ideal:people should be forgiving of others’ mistakes. Instead, we tend to do the opposite—find someone else to pass the blame on to. However, taking responsibility for something that went wrong is a mark of great maturity.
mon sense is what we call clear thought. Having mon sense means having a good general plan that will make things work well, and it also means staying with the plan. mon sense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm, but you leave the umbrella home when you hear a weather forecast for sunshine. mon sense does not seem to be mon for large organizations, because there are so many things going on that one person cannot be in charge of everything. People say that in a large pany, “the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing."
And what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is like creating a work of art? One of the mon problems with making excuses is that people, especially young people, get the idea that it’s okay not to be totally honest all the time. There is a corollary (直接推论) to that:if a good excuse is“good” even if it isn’t honest, then where is the place of the truth?
1. According to the passage, which of the following seems the most human?
A. To search for truth.
B. To achieve one’s ideal.
C. To make fun of others’ mistakes.
D. To criticize others for one’s ow n error.
2. According to the author, what is a sign of a man’s maturity?
A. Doing things his own way.
B. Bearing responsibility for his mistakes.
C. Making as few mistakes as possible.
D. Thinking seriously about his wrongdoings.
3. Which of the following is NOT based on mon sense?
A. A man tries to take charge of everything in a large pany.
B. A student goes out with an umbrella in stormy weather.
C. A pany’s next move follows a good plan.
D. A lawyer acts on fine judgments.
4. What is the author’s opi nion about a good excuse?
A. Making a good excuse is sometimes a better policy.
B. Inventing a good excuse needs creative ideas.
C. A good excuse is as rewarding as honesty.
D. Bitter truth is better than a good excuse.
5. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. A Mirror of Human Nature
B. To Blame or to Forgive
C. A Mark of Maturity
D. Truth of Excuse

人物传记类
(2013·某某,B)George Gershwin, born in 1898,was one of America's greatest posers. He published his first song when he was eighteen years old.During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs.
Many of Gershwin's songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s.Many of his songs have remained popular as ever.Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way—from jazz to country.
In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music.Could jazz, some people asked,be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music.Gershwin agreed to pose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it.And in that short time,he posed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue.Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him worldfamous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular.
In 1928,Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study position (作曲)with the wellknown musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him.She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazzinfluenced style. While there,Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics (评论家)were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life,to others it was stilly and boring. But it quickly
became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works.
George Gershwin died in 1937,just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirtynine years old.Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages.People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.
