He moves around her office at work and goes shopping with her. “Most people don’t mind Allen,〞 says Brigitta, who thinks he is wonderful. “He is my fourth child,〞 she says. She may think of him and treat him that way, buying himdelicious food, paying his health bills and his taxes, but in fact Allen is only a dog.
Brigitta and Allen live in Sweden, a country where everyone is expected to lead an orderly life according to the rules laid down by the government, which also provides a high level of care for its people. Yet, this level of care costs a lot of money.
People in Sweden pay taxes (税) on everything, so they aren’t surprised to find that owning a dog means some more taxes. Some people are paying as much as 500 Sweden kronor in taxes a year for the right to keep their dogs.Money from dog taxes is spent by the government on dog hospitals and sometimes medical treatment for a dog that falls ill. However, such a treatment is expensive,
so dog owners often decide to pay health insurance (保险) and some even buy life insurance for their dogs.
In Sweden, dog owners must pay for any damage their dogs do. A Swedish kennel (养狗场) club official explains what this means: if your dog runs out on the road and gets hit by a passing car, you, as the owner, have to pay for any damage done to the car, even if your dog has been killed in the accident.

Shopping is not as simple as you may think! There are all sorts of tricks at play each time we reach out for that particular brand 商标of product on the shelf.
Colouring, for example, varies according to what the producers are trying to sell. Health foods are packaged in greens, yellows or browns because we think of these as healthy colours. Ice cream packets are often blue and expensive goods, like chocolates, are gold or silver.
When some kind of pain killer was brought out recently, researchers found that the colours turned the customers off because they made the product look weak and ineffective. Eventually, it came on the market in a dark blue and white package—blue because we think of it as safe, and white as calm.
The size of a product can attract a shopper. But quite often a bottle doesn’t contain as much as it appears to.
It is believed that the better-known companies spend, on average, 70 percent of the total cost of the product itself on packaging!
The most successful producers know that it’s not enough to have a good product. The founder of Pears soap, who for 25 years has used pretty little girls to promote (推销) their goods, came to the conclusion: “Any foo l can make soap, but it takes a genius to sell it.〞

Baby girls make their way directly for dolls as soon as they can crawl, while boys will head for the toy cars, a study has shown. The findings, the first to show differences in very young babies, suggest there is a biological〔生物学的〕 basis(根底) to their preferences〔偏爱〕.
Psychologists(心理学家) Dr. Brenda Todd from City University London carried out an experiment involving 90 infants(婴儿) aged nine months to 36 months. The babies were allowed to choose from seven toys. Some were stereotypically boys' toys - a car, a digger, a ball and a blue teddy. The rest were girls’ toys: a pink teddy, a doll and a cooking set. They were placed a meter away from the toys, and could pick whichever toy they liked. Their choice and the amount of time they spent playing with each toy were recorded.
Of the youngest children (nine to 14 months), girls spent significantly(明显的) longer playing with the doll than boys, and boys spent much more time with the car and ball than the girls did. Among the two-and three-year-olds, girls spent 50 percent of the time playing with the doll while only two boys briefly(简单地) touched it. The boys spent almost 90 percent of their time playing with cars, which the girls barely(几乎不) touched. There was no link between the parents’ view on which toys were more appropriate for boys or girls, and the children’s choice.
Dr Brenda Todd said: “Children of this age are already exposed (暴露)to much socialization(社会化). Boys may be given ‘toys that go’while girls get toys they can care for, which may help shape their preference. But these findings agree with the former idea that children show natural
interests in particular kinds of toys. There could be a biological basis for their choices. Males through evolution have been adapted to prefer moving objects, probably through hunting instincts 〔本能〕, while girls prefer warmer colours such as pink, the colour of a newborn baby.〞31.Baby boys and girls have different toy preferences probably because__________.
A.baby boys are much more active
B.baby girls like bright colours more
C.their parents treat them differently
D.there is a natural difference between them
32.Both baby boys and baby girls like to play with__________ according to the study.

33.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.Nine-month-old baby boys don’t play with dolls at all.
B.Two-year-old baby girls sometimes play with cars and balls.
C.The older the babies are, the more obvious their preference is.
D.Parents should teach their babies to share each other’s toys.
34.What conclusion did Dr. Brenda Todd draw from the results of the study?
A.Adults purposely〔故意地〕 influence their babies preference.
B.Babies’ preference isn’t affected by social surroundings.
C.Baby boys preferring to moving toys will be good at hunting.
D.Baby girls preferring warmer colors will be warm-hearted.
35.We may read this article in a_________ section of a newspaper.

Top Meal of the Day
A recent survey shows that nearly 30% of the students in our school do not have breakfast. They tend to feel sleepy in class and have bad memories, so it is hard for them to get high marks in all kinds of test.
Some students who study late into the night choose to miss breakfast so that they can have a few extra minutes in bed. Others are given money to buy their breakfast on the way to school because their parents are too busy to prepare it for them. In addition, a few schoolgirls want to stay slim and often go to school without breakfast.
In fact, the morning meal plays an important part. It can provide 30 percent of the whole day’s energy, which helps improve the efficiency of their studying. So school kids should start their day with a regular breakfast.。
