How much do consumers care about the carbon footprint of the products they buy? Would they care more if the goods were labeled with emissions(排放物)data?Does it matter at which stage in the lifecycle of a product the carbon is emitted? Research published in the International Journal of Environmental Policy and Decision Making offers a way to find out.
Study participants view a carbon footprint label as similar to labels that have appeared on some existing products. The label shows the carbon dioxide emissions connected with their production, transportation, usage and disposal(清理), thus showing the buyer the likely effect on climate change of buying a particular product. In the first group of studies, the research team proved that carbon emissions and a carbon emissions label would indeed play a role in consumer product decisions, although not as great a role as price. In a second set of studies, the team found that emissions connected with usage were most important to consumers followed by the transportation and disposal stages. The carbon footprint of the producing process was considered less important to consumers than the other stages in the product's lifecycle because it is outside the consumer's control. That is, the participants felt they were less responsible for carbon emitted during producing process.Consumers value recycling a product, but the researchers found that, overall, the consumers would preferproducers to offset(补偿)carbon emissions rather than having toaddressthe problem directly themselves.
Consumers are increasingly concerned with climate change problems, and already carbon labeling is appearing on some products."We find that participantsnot only take the carbon label into account when making product decisions, but they want detailed information on the label," the researchers explain. They suggest that companies should prepare for how carbon emissions labels might affect future consumer choice.

The idea of growing food in a desert would make most people laugh but this is quickly becoming a reality. There are currently two desert farms in the world where quality vegetables are being planted cheaply and easily.
Sundrop Farms, based in South Australia, uses experimental greenhouses to grow tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. The biggest challenge of growing food in a desert, obviously, is the lack of available water. The researchers at Sundrop Farms have gotten aroundthis problemby using the sun to desalinate (淡化) sea water. It can also be used to control the temperature of the greenhouses.
Without depending on limited resources such as land and fresh water Sundrop Farms has made farming a practice. This can increase the world’s food supplies. Another benefit ofthis kind of farming is that it can be done anywhere, thus reducing the costs of transporting food to distant locations. Yet another benefit is that it reduces the need for pesticides (杀虫剂).
Another experimental desert farm is the Sahara Forest Project, which began in Qatar in December 2012. Greenhouses in the farm are cooled by saltwater. Solar power and other technologies are used together to help make vegetation (植被) grow in the desert environment. As deserts have expanded over recent years around the world due to global warming, this project could solve the problem.
The result form the Qatar project were better than expected and in June of 2014, Jordan agreed to host another one. This will be much bigger than the Qatar project and the project members will have even more opportunities to test their experiments on a much larger scale. It is not clear yet that desert farming resents the
future of farming but these projects have shown some success in the field.

In order to help our foreign teachers better understand Chinese traditional culture or national festivals, my classmate and I held a party last Sunday. In the beginning, five students introduced to the customs of the festivals one by one with English. Then, one student recited three ancient poems about the moon, with another standing nearby and translate them into English sentence by sentence. Then, we sing and danced with our foreign teachers. We had good time. The party not only helped we relax from our busily study, but also spread our traditional culture. Beside, we practiced our English.

On a steamy morning in July, Clay and Acaimie Chastain arrived at the base of Mount Liamuiga on the Caribbean island of St.Kitts, ready to spend a day of their honeymoon climbing Mount Liamuiga. The highest point on St.Kitts, Liamuiga is also a dormant(休眠的)volcano that starts in the clouds and plunges down to meet the sea.
They couldn't find a visitor centre or hire a guide, so they set off on their own. They reached the peak around noon and ate their sandwiches looking out over the ocean and surrounding islands.
That's when Clay saw it: a small trail that led into the volcano's crater(坑), a bowl of green with cloud forest giving way to green grass.A series of screw eyes(螺钉孔)had been drilled into the rocks, with ropes that led down.Clay wanted to go down and take some pictures.Acaimie followed him a little way, but she was very cautious and quite scared of heights;so Clay went on alone.
A few minutes later, she heard a crash——a noise that sounded like a large branch snapping, followed by the sound of something big rolling downhill."Clay?" she called.Silence.
Uneasy, she waited a minute and shouted again——still nothing. And then, from somewhere much further down, she heard a weak cry for help. This time she was certain: It was Clay calling for help from deep within the crater.
As she looked over the lip of the volcano, she tried to stop some of her worst worries. Her phone wasn't getting a signal, and her cries for help were met with only silence."Clay!" she shouted as loud as she could."Clay, are you OK?"
Acaimie grasped the rope and began climbing down the trail. When the path became too steep, she slid on her butt, her legs and arms getting bruised and scraped in the process. Then, just off the trail, she saw a flash of red.It was Clay's scarf. And next to it was his cell phone.
She grabbed both and continued down, screaming for Clay all the way.
"Help," he said in that strange voice.
"I'm coming! Stay where you are," she said.
