Americans use many expressions with the word “dog”. People in the US love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners lead a different kind of life. The expression “to lead a dog’s life”describes a person who has an unhappy life.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That
means many people are competing for the same thing, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, they have to work like a dog. This means they have to work very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
Some people say, “Every dog has its day.”This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that old people don’t like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
Some other people are compared to dogs in bad ways. People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they don’t want. But mean dogs are often used to guard the property, for they bark at or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.
Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year.
A rainstorm may cool the weather, but we don’t want it to rain too hard. We don’t want it to rain cats and dogs.
51. The underlined word “mean” in Paragraph 4 most probably means “_____”.
A.
B. wild
C. violent
D. poor
selfish
52. A person who lives an unhappy life can be described as “_____”.

Birds can learn to choose the best building materials for their nests, according to scientists.
It was previously thought that birds’choice of nest materials was determined by their genes, that is, each type of bird has their own methods of building nests born with them. But an experiment has now shown this to be a more complex activity. This study, published in the Royal Society Journal Proceeding B, involved giving zebra finches (斑胸草雀) a choice of soft and hard string to build the their nests. “W e found that they liked the harder string,”explained the lead researcher Dr Bailey from the University of St Andrews. “I t’s more efficient for them to build with—they can build a nest with fewer materials.”
Dr Bailey and her colleagues were planning to test the learning ability of birds; their test aimed to work out if the birds could learn to tell the difference among
the materials based on their quality. To test this, they gave one group of finches flexible, soft string to build with, and another group harder string. Both groups of birds were then offered a choice between the soft and hard string. And the birds that had been made to build their nests with the soft string immediately chose the more rigid building materials.
“T here is a great diversity of nests in the natural world,” said Dr Bailey. “And because birds are not considered to be as clever as people, who can learn to use different materials quite easily, the assumption had been that there was a genetic pattern in the birds’ brains.”
“T his shows that actually learning is also very important for their decisions.”Mike Toms from the British Trust for Ornithology said the research made a lot of sense.
“I t may help to explain the variety of materials that may be used by individuals of the same species nesting in the same general area.” He told BBC news.
55. What is the purpose of the experiment mentioned in the text?
A. To make sure finches can use different building materials like people.
B. To find which finch is more skillful in choosing building materials.
C. To test the ability of finches to learn from other birds.
D. To confirm finches’ ability to identify building materials by learning.
56. Which is the RIGHT order of the steps in the experiment?
a. Building materials were offered to the finches.

57. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Birds of the same species choose to build nests in the same area.
B. It’s common that the same species birds use different materials.
C. Birds sometimes can not find various building
materials.
D. People should help birds build nests if possible.

By 2050, a completely new type of human evolve as a result of extremely new technology, behavior, and natural selection. This is according to Cadell Last, a researcher at the Global Brain Institute, who claims mankind is undergoing a major “evolutionary transition”.
In less than four decades, Mr. Last claims we will live longer, have children in old age and rely on artificial intelligence to do ordinary and boring tasks. This shift is so significant, he claims, it is comparable to the change fro m monkeys to apes, and apes to humans. “Your 80 or 100 is going to be so radically different than your grandparents,” Mr. Last says, who believes we will spend much of our time living in virtual reality. Some
evolutionary scientists believe this age could be as high as 120 by 2050.
Mr. Last claims humans will also demonstrate delayed sexual maturation, according to a report by Christina Sterbenz in Business Insider. This refers to something known as life history theory which attempts to explain how natural selection shapes key events in a creature’s life, such as reproduction. It suggests that as brain sizes increase, organisms need more energy and time to reach their full potential, and so reproduce less.
Instead of living fast and dying younger, Mr. Last believes humans will live slow and die old. “Global society at the moment is a complete mess,” he told MailO nline. “But in crisis there is opportunity, and in apocalypse (启示) there can be transformation. So I think the next system humanity creates will be far more sophisticated, fair, and abundant than our current civilization.”
“I think our next system will be as different from the modern world, as our contemporary world is from the medieval (中世纪的) world. The biological clock isn't going to be around forever,” he added, and said that
people could pause it for some time using future technology.
The change is already happening. Today, the average age at which a woman in Britain has her first baby has been rising steadily stands at 29. 8. In the US, just one percent of first children were born to women over the age of 35 in 1970. By 2018, that figure rose to 15 percent.
“A s countries become socio-economically advanced, more and more people, especially women have the option to engage in cultural reproduction,” Mr. Last added. And as well as having more child-free years to enjoy leisure time, he believes artificial intelligence will make up the need for low-skill jobs. We may also spend a large amount of time living in virtual reality. “I’m not quite sure most people have really absorbed the implications of this possibility,” Mr. Last said.
His views are detailed in a paper, titled “Human Evolution, Life History Theory, and the End of Biological Reproduction" published Current Aging Science.
59. According to Cadell Last, a completely new type of
human will appear because of _____.
①artificial intelligence ②new technology ③natural selection ④ mundane tasks
⑤ behavior
A. ②③⑤
B. ①②③
C. ③④⑤
D. ①②⑤
60. Which statement is compared by Mr. Last to the change from monkeys to apes, and apes to humans?
A. We have diseases and die young.
B. We give birth to a child when we are young.
C. We spend less time in virtual reality.
D. We use intelligent robots to do everyday housework.
61. The underlined words in the third paragraph most probably mean “_____”.
A. Organisms need more energy and time to ripen.
B. Natural selection shapes key events.
C. Reproduction.
D. Reproduce less.
62. In the next system Mr. Last explained we can infer that _____.
A. women are engaged in careers or hobbies instead of giving birth to babies
B. women are engaged in playing computer games rather
than working
C. women are engaged in cultural reproduction in place of men
D. women are engaged in living in virtual reality without options
D
More than 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed across the globe each day, and it’s likely that many taste bitter.
Now, a new study suggests that coffee fans can make their drink taste sweeter by simply swapping the color of their coffee cups.
Scientists from Federation University Australia and the University of Oxford claim that blue and glass cups, which are popular in some coffee shops, reduce a coffee's bitterness, without any need for sugar and that coffee drunk from white cups tastes bitterest.
To prove their claims, the researchers invited 36 volunteers and used three different colored cups - blue, white and transparent glass - to do experiments.
In the experiment, coffee consumed from the white cup was found to taste less sweet when compared to the other
two colored cups, while the blue cup made the coffee taste the sweetest.
The scientists believe that the color brown may be associated with coffee’s bitterness because coffee in a white cup appears the brownest and tastes bitterest.
“Our study clearly shows that the color of a coffee mug does influence the perceived taste and flavor of coffee,”said the lead author Dr George Doorn of Federation University Australia, “but the potential effects may be different between a one-time purchase and a return customer.”
“A nyhow, t he effect of the mug’s color on the flavor of the coffee suggests that café owners, baristas, as well as coffee mug manufacturers should carefully consider the color of their mugs,” he added.
However, the idea that color can alter the taste of food and drink is not new.
A study published last year revealed that red, strawberry-flavored mousse (慕斯蛋糕) served on a white plate was 10 percent sweeter and 15 percent more flavorful than the same food presented on a black plate.
63. What color of the cup can best reduce coffee’s
bitterness without adding sugar?
A. Blue.
B. Brown.
C. White.
D.
Transparent
.
64. The scientists used _____ to do the experiment to prove their claims.
① different brands of coffee
② different –colored coffee cups
③ several volunteers
④ several manufacturers
A. ①②
B. ②③
C. ②④
D. ③④
65. Why does coffee in white cups taste the least sweet?
A. Because white cups are not as beautiful as other cups.
B. Because white cups are better used to serve cakes.
C. Because white cups reduce the sugar in them.
D. Because white cups make coffee appear the brownest.
66. According to the article, which of the following statement is TRUE?
A. Black plates increase the sweetness of food and drink.
B. Strawberry-flavored mousse is 10 percent sweeter
than coffee.
C. People can make coffee taste sweeter by changing the color of their coffee cups.
D. People consume more than 2.5 billion cups of coffee across the globe each day.

During the month of September, a dear friend of mine lost her husband suddenly in an accident. The tragedy was a shock to everyone.
This accident was sudden and certainly unexpected. It drove home the realization that you just don’t know when a loved one is no longer going to be with you. We sometimes take our loved ones for granted, and we expect they will be with us forever. However, as we all know, life does not work that way and sometimes we get a wake up call that shocks us and makes us stand back and realize how short life is.
In consoling her, I tried to imagine if I were in her shoes how I would feel. It was impossible to imagine what she was going through. What words could I say to help her?
Sometimes words just can’t express our feelings.
Sometimes our actions are much more meaningful than words.A hug can sometimes express more than our words will ever express. Sometimes, just being there to listen is more meaningful and helpful to people.
A second wake up call.
As I was leaving the funeral, I ran into Marilyn. Marilyn has been a true friend to me over the years. She is one of those friends who is with you in the good times and is always by your side in the bad times. She has a sense of humor that makes everyone laugh and she makes everyone feel at ease. We chit-chatted for a few moments, and then she asked me how my job was. So I started talking and talking (I am sure she wished she had never asked).
I was having a stressful week with my job and I was telling her all the issues and how I was feeling. She listened to me as I was raving about my frustrations, then without saying a word, she took her hands and placed them on my face, and said to me, "But at least you had a day."
The touch of her hands on my cheeks, the calmness in her voice, and the words she spoke, "BUT AT LEAST YOU HAD A DAY." hit me like a ton of bricks. All the
frustrations, all the stress that was building up inside me came to a complete stop.
Since that day, when I start feeling stressed, I remind myself of Marilyn's words: but at least I had a day! Things could be a lot worse. The stress of the situation always could be worse, but I am alive and I have a lot to be thankful for, so I shall not waste my days with stress and frustrations. Life is too short!
67. According to the passage, we can’t get the idea that _____.
A. actions may be more meaningful than words
B. take every day you can breathe as a gift and enjoy it
C. we should cherish our loved ones
D. once bitten, twice shy
68. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 probably means “_____”.
A. drives somebody home
B. makes something
understood
C. forces somebody out
D. makes something easy
69. Which of the following is the author likely to do?
A. Say something to
B. Leave her immediately.
comfort her.
C. Give a present.
D. Be there to listen.
70. Marilyn is a kind of person who can not _____.
B. be a good listener
A. share your joys and
sorrows
C. be careless and proud

One possible version:
It is obvious that everyone has strengths and weaknesses. We should learn from others in order to make up for our own weakness.
Take my classmate Tom for example. He always failed in physics, which made him frustrated. Fortunately, through group cooperative learning he got a good chance to learn from his partners in the group. They all had their own strong points. He turned to his partners for help and learned their scientific learning methods. One of his partners gave him some useful advice on how to improve physics, thus helping him achieve much progress. He also worked hard to catch up with his partners. We can conclude from the example that there is always someone around you to learn from. (122w)
