阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

While the artificial(人造的) hand is considerably less useful than the natural one, there may be some jobs that it can do more efficiently. From time to time we have to do rather difficult jobs and feel that one of our fingers is getting in the way. It is possible that on these occasions a specially designed artificial hand would be more efficient.
Scientists in the United States are studying ways of increasing the power of the human hand, or rather of its muscles. Known as a "man-amplifier", a machine under development at Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory, consists of a framework or suit which the operator wears. Every movement he makes is repeated by the steel frame work he is wearing, but the power which moves the parts of the frame comes from hydraulic(液压的) motors.
If the operator bends down to pick something up, the work is done not by his own weak muscles but by the hydraulic motors which make it possible for him to lift450 kilograms in each hand.
Another machine called a "HandiMan" has two arms and hands which repeat every movement of the operator's arms and hands, but with much more strength. The arms and hands on this machine also feed back to the operator information about the work they are doing and the difficulties they meet, so that he can adjust(调节) his control accordingly.
In these devices the operator controls the movements directly- they are an extension of his own movements. But just as the operations of a distant unmanned spaceship circling the moon can be controlled by radio signals, so also such devices, properly designed, could be radio-controlled. An astronaut exploring an unknown planet could send out a robot which would do the job for him and send back information. Will the day ever come when the machine, more powerful than man and controlled by a computer brain, takes over from its human inventor?
56. The passage is mainly about ___.
A. the weakness of the human hand
B. the power and strength of the artificial hand
C. the wide use of robots in many fields
D. the operation of the artificial hand in space exploration
57. According to the passage, the artificial hand is ___.
A. widely used for it has proved better than the natural hand
B. slower in doing some rather difficult jobs
C. operated by a strong man or otherwise by a computer
D. being tried and tested to help people in some ways
58. How many times would it take an operator wearing a "man-amplifier' to carry 2,500 kilograms ?
A. Three.
B. Four.
C. Five.
D. Six.
59. The advantage of a "HandiMan" over a "man-amplifier" mentioned in the passage is ___.
A. the operator knows how the work is going on
B, it can work with more strength and pick up more weight
C. the machine is more powerful and easier to operate
D. repeat every movement of the operator
60. The writer of this passage believes that ____.
A. artificial hands can replace natural ones in certain jobs
B. man seems powerless in comparison with machines
C. natural hands cannot compare with artificial ones in modern times
D. machines will finally get the better of their human inventors

SHE was born for the camera," said a photographer who shot Liu Yifei's picture when she was only eight.
Over the past year, Liu, an 18-year-old Chinese American, has
shot to fame while playing Wang Yuyan, in Jin Yong's "Eightfold
Path of the Heavenly Dragon" (《天龙八部》). Millions of
teenagers have been drawn in by her light smile and beautiful
long hair. Many magazines have described her as one of the most
charming (有魅力的) young actresses of 2004. People say that
Liu will be even bigger this year.
"She is so beautiful on TV. She has the special character to give
flesh and blood to the fairy-like and beautiful Wang Yuyan," said
Yang Mingwei, a Senior 2 boy and Liu fan from Wuyi High
School in Fujian.
Currently Liu is filming the TV series "The Return of the Condor
Heroes" (《神雕侠侣》), another Jin Yong novel. In the show to be
aired this year, Liu plays the Little Dragon Girl.
Liu is currently a grade three student at the Beijing Film

people say that her success is only down to her beauty. When she returned to China with her mother at the age of 14, she did originally work as a model. It was when a director saw her picture on an advertisement board on the street that her opportunity to work in TV arose.
"A pretty face does not last forever. To be a good actress you must work hard and have a professional attitude (专业态度)," Liu said. Every day she spends hours practicing all the kungfu kicks and punches (踢打) for the show.
"There have been times during filming when I have remained hanging in the air on wires for half a day as the director keeps trying to get the perfect take," said Liu recently.
Liu was born in Wuhan but moved to the US with her mother when she was 10. Things were not easy
at first.
"When I started at school I went to the wrong classroom for 10 days in a row because my English was so bad. I cried a lot when I saw all the textbooks to read were in English. But I tried my best and eventually overcame the challenges and finally won," Liu said. "The best thing I learnt in the US is to be independent (独立的) and brave," she said.
Liu said that she believes the saying that good luck only comes to those who are ready. And she is always ready for the camera.

Good evening. Tonight's broadcast brings together music from different corners of the world. The records we have chosen for you are from classical Western music, Indian music, pop and a Negro spiritual(黑人灵歌). In this broadcast we shall study the language of music. We shall try to find out how music says what people feel. You will hear a Beethoven piano piece, a composition for the sitar(西他,一种弦乐器),and songs sung by a pop group and some black Americans. It will be natural if you like one more than the others. I shall be trying to explain why they are all good music.
The feeling in each of these 4 musical compositions is sadness. You can find sadness in words, in paintings, and in music. The word 'music' comes from the Greek word 'Muse'. The Muses were goddesses of the arts. Music is only one of the arts. It is like the spoken language, but uses sounds differently. In the spiritual and the pop song you will hear voices. The words are part of the musical composition. In the other pieces you will hear only the piano or the sitar. Music is now heard everywhere, in shops and buses and at home. We shall be trying to find out more about how music works. It is worth making the effort. Only then can we say why one piece of music is good and another bad.
64. The records which will be played
A. include a few new kinds of music
B. express all our feelings
C. are from different parts of the world
D. show different kinds of feelings
65. The speaker is trying to explain
A. that all music is good
B. why each of the pieces of music is good
C. why some people like one piece more than others
D. that different kinds of music are alike in nature
66. Which of the following is NOT correct?
A. In a Beethoven piano piece you can not hear voices.
B. The words are always part of the musical composition.
C. It is natural for people to like one kind of music more than the others.
D. In some musical compositions you can hear words.
67. According to the passage, we can tell why one piece of music is better than another___.
A. after we learn more about how music works
B. after these musical compositions are explained
C. after we find out what people feel in music
D. only when we know how to play music

Bias formed off southwest Mexico during the last week, but the outer part of the storm swept western Michoacan State, killing four people when their wood and cardboard home fell down. Monkey Repellent
After years of unsuccessful attempts to keep crop-eating monkeys out of Japanese fields, a Tokyo research team believes that it may have finally found a way to prevent the damage caused by the monkeys. Animal ruin of crops were successfully prevented by shooting chilli(辣椒) powder into the air, irritating the eyes and noses of monkeys that passed in front of carefully placed warning sensors.
"We've tried...all kinds of preventive measures, but the monkeys are bright enough to outsmart the tricks," said Toshiaki Wada, Director of the Tokyo Forestry Experiment Station in western Tokyo.

A terrifying example of the sea's power saw 125,000 people die in 12 different countries last week. The devastation (毁坏) was caused when a massive earthquake sent tsunamis (海啸) smashing into Indian Ocean coastlines.
Communities in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Malaysia and East Africa have been destroyed by the monster waves. Whole towns were simply swept aside by the power of the water. Cars, trains and buildings could not survive (幸免), let alone the people who stood in the way.
The earthquake measured 9.0 on the Richter scale (里氏震级) and occurred off the coast of Indonesia. It was recorded as the fifth strongest since 1900.
Scientists said the quake was as powerful as a million of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan during World War II. "This may be the worst natural disaster in recent history because it is affecting so many heavily populated coastal areas," said Jan Egeland, a UN official.
Because such waves rarely happen in the Indian Ocean, there is no system in place to warn coastal communities they are about to be hit.
Tsunami is Japanese for "harbour wave." They are usually caused by a sudden rise or fall of part of the Earth's crust (地壳) under the ocean. Tsunamis often happen in oceans and they are most common in the Pacific. Normally a tsunami includes a series of waves.
Tsunamis can be very long – as much as 100 kilometres – and be as far as one hour apart. They are able to cross entire oceans without losing much energy. One of the most striking facts about tsunamis is that an earthquake on one side of the Pacific Ocean can cause giant waves and destruction on the other side. When the ocean is deep, tsunamis can travel unnoticed at speeds of up to 800 kilometres per hour. They can cross the entire ocean in a day or less.
The wave may only be a few metres high in the ocean but when it is near the shore and reaches shallow (浅) water, the wave builds up very quickly in height. Witnesses (目击者) in some areas of Indonesia reported seeing up to 10-metre high waves crash into the shore.
"Tsunamis travel outward in all directions from the centre of an earthquake and attack coastlines," said Wong Wing-Tak, senior scientific officer at the Hong Kong Observatory (气象台). "They can easily suck people out to sea, cause flooding and destroy property."
73.Why does the writer use monster in the second paragraph?
A. Because the waves look like some monster.
B. Because the waves are large and frightening
C. Because the size of the waves are like a monster.
D. Because the waves have the same colour as a monster.
74. Why may it be the worst natural disaster in recent history?
A. Because many heavily populated coastal areas are suffering from the tsunamis.
B. Because up to 10-metre high waves crashed into shore in Indonesia.
C. Because it rarely happens in the Indian Ocean.
D. Because it happens after an earthquake.
75.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. A sudden rise or fall of part of the Earth’s crust under the ocean can cause Tsunamis.
B. Tsunamis travel outward in all directions from the center of an earthquake.
C. Tsunamis will die out near the shore or in shallow waters.
D. Tsunamis can affect the whole area around the sea.

Possible version
Dear editor,
Recently students of our school have made a survey of "Views on Newspapers". The people whom we interviewed have two different opinions.45% of the people enjoy reading newspapers. First of all, as a convenient source of information, reading newspapers is not limited by time. Secondly, reading also makes people think, which helps develop people’s intelligence. Moreover, people can select and read whatever section they are interested in.
However, 55% of the people don’t turn to ne wspapers to get information. They hold the idea that newspapers are not very attractive because they lack the sound and video that make other sources of information more exciting to look at than newspapers. What’s more, readers receive information from newspapers later than from the Internet and TV.
In my opinion, people can make use of whatever means to gather information, so long as it’s convenient for them.
Yours,
Li Hua
