The One Where Monica Gets a New Roommate (The Pilot)

1.01 Pilot
Rachel leaves Barry at the alter and moves in with Monica.
Monica goes on a date with Paul the wine guy, who turns out to be less than sincere.
Ross is depressed about his failed marriage.
Joey compares women to ice cream.
Everyone watches Spanish soaps.
Ross reveals his high school crush on Rachel.
[Scene: Central Perk, Chandler, Joey, Phoebe, and Monica are there.]
Monica: There's nothing to tell! He's just some guy I work with!

Monica这个角色原本为Janeane Garofalo(即24小时里的Janis Gold)准备,但她拒绝了这个角色

Joey: C'mon, you're going out with the guy! There's gotta be something wrong with him!
go out with
Chandler: So does he have a hump? A hump and a hairpiece?
hump n.驼背
hairpiece:false hair;wig n.
Phoebe: Wait, does he eat chalk?
(They all stare, bemused.)
bemused: puzzled adj.
Phoebe: Just 'cause I don't want her to go through what I went through with Carl- oh!
go through
Monica: Okay, everybody relax. This is not even a date. It's just two people going out to
dinner and- not having sex.
Chandler: Sounds like a date to me.
[Time Lapse]
Chandler: Alright, so I'm back in high school, I'm standing in the middle of the cafeteria, and I realize I am totally…naked.
naked adj.
cafeteria
All: Oh, yeah. Had that dream.
Chandler: Then I look down, and I realize there's a phone... there.
Joey: Instead of...?
Chandler: That's right.
Joey: Never had that dream.
Phoebe: No.
Chandler: All of a sudden, the phone starts to ring, and it turns out it's my mother, which
is very-very weird, because- she never calls me!
all of a sudden adv.
weird adj.
[Time Lapse, Ross has entered.]
Ross: (mortified) Hi.
mortified adj.
mortify v.
[eg:The teacher was mortified by his own inability to answer such a simple question] Joey: This guy says hello, I wanna kill myself.
wanna = want to
Monica: Are you okay, sweetie?
Ross: I just feel like someone reached down my throat, grabbed my small intestine, pulled it out of my mouth and tied it around my neck...
reached down

Her dress reached down to her ankles.

pull sth out of
Pull the chestnut out of fire.

Chandler: Cookie?
Monica: (explaining to the others) Carol moved her stuff out today.
Joey: Ohh.
Monica: (to Ross) Let me get you some coffee.
Ross: Thanks.
Phoebe: Ooh! Oh! (She starts to pluck at the air just in front of Ross.)
pluck v.
[eg:He plucked the letter from her hands]/pluck at:To remove abruptly(adv.唐突地) or
forcibly(adv.
Ross: No, no don't! Stop cleansing my aura! No, just leave my aura alone, okay? I'll be fine,
alright? Really, everyone. I hope she'll be very happy.
aura:a distinctive atmosphere surrounding a given source n.气氛灵气光环[eg: the place had an aura of mystery]

Ross: Monica: No you don't.
Ross: No I don't, to hell with her, she left me!
to hell with<口>让...
Joey: And you never knew she was a lesbian...
Ross: No!! Okay?! Why does everyone keep fixating on that? She didn't know, how should I
know?
fixate on: to focus one’s gaze or attention on sth v.关注某事(挺好的词组,应该记住)Chandler: Sometimes I wish I was a lesbian... (They all stare at him.) Did I say that out loud?
loud在口语中用来替代loudly,所以这句话应该是did i say that out loudly?

Joey: Alright Ross, look. You're feeling a lot of pain right now. You're angry. You're hurting. Can I tell you what the answer is?
(Ross gestures his consent.)
gesture
consent vi.
Joey: Strip joint! C'mon, you're single! Have some hormones.
strip v.
Strip joint: A nightclub(n.夜总会) or other establishment where striptease(n.脱衣舞) is
performed n.

stripper
Also called ecdysiast, exotic dancer, stripteaser. a person who performs a striptease.

hormone n.
Ross: I don't want to be single, okay? I just... I just- I just wanna be married again!
(Rachel enters in a wet wedding dress and starts to search the room.)
Chandler: And I just want a million dollars! (He extends his hand hopefully.)
Monica: Rachel?!
Rachel: Oh God Monica hi! Thank God! I just went to your building and you weren't there and
then this guy with a big hammer said you might be here and you are, you are!
Waitress: Can I get you some coffee?
Monica: (pointing at Rachel) De-caff. (to All) Okay, everybody, this is Rachel, another
Lincoln High survivor. (to Rachel) This is everybody, this is Chandler, and Phoebe, and Joey, and- you remember my brother Ross?
De-caff

Somebody says that is a goof for friends:
In the pilot episode after Rachel runs into the café, Monica introduces her to Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe and says "Remember my brother Ross?". In later episodes it shows flashbacks that Chandler was at Monica's house while Rachel was there, so Rachel should have remembered Chandler when she got to the café, instead of being introduced for the first time there.

Another goof: In the pilot episode, Chandler and Joey's apartment number is #4 while Monica and Rachel's is #5. Starting with this, the second episode, the numbers change to #19 and #20.
Rachel: Sure!
Ross: Hi.
(They go to hug but Ross's umbrella opens. He sits back down defeated again. A moment of
silence follows as Rachel sits and the others expect her to explain.)
Monica: So you wanna tell us now, or are we waiting for four wet bridesmaids?
bridesmaid n.
Rachel: Oh God... well, it started about a half hour before the wedding. I was in this room where we were keeping all the presents, and I was looking at this gravy boat. This really gorgeous Lamauge gravy boat. When all of a sudden- (to the waitress that brought her coffee)Sweet 'n' Lo?- I realized that I was more turned on by this gravy boat than by Barry! And then I got really freaked out, and that's when it hit me: how much Barry looks like Mr. Potato Head. Y'know, I mean, I always knew looked familiar, but... Anyway, I just had to get out of there, and I started wondering 'Why am I doing this, and who am I doing this for?'. (to Monica) So anyway I just didn't know where to go, and I know that you and I have kinda drifted apart, but you're the only person I knew who lived here in the city.
Sweet 'n' Lo
gravy n.
Gravy boat: An elongated, boat-shaped pitcher used to serve gravy. A gravy boat usually sits on a matching plate, which is used to catch gravy drips. Sometimes the plate is permanently attached to the pitcher. A matching ladle often accompanies a gravy boat. Also called sauce
gravy boat.

gorgeous adj. 打开(turn on the radio)b.
freak out
a.have an extreme reaction to sth吓坏了
b.act abnormally (under the influence of drugs)
c.make sb feel extreme plaesure or unease焦躁害怕不安
drift apart
Monica: Who wasn't invited to the wedding.
Rachel: Ooh, I was kinda hoping that wouldn't be an issue.
kinda = kind of
sorta = sort of

[Scene: Monica's Apartment, everyone is there and watching a Spanish Soap on TV and are trying to figure out what is going on.]
Monica: Now I'm guessing that he bought her the big pipe organ, and she's really not happy about it.
pipe organ n.
Rachel: (on phone) Daddy, I just... I can't marry him! I'm sorry. I just don't love him. Well, it matters to me!
matter vi.
(The scene on TV has changed to show two women, one is holding her hair.)

Chandler: (re TV) Ooh, she should not be wearing those pants.
should be doing sth

We should be wearing seat belts.

Joey: I say push her down the stairs.
Phoebe, Ross, Chandler, and Joey: Push her down the stairs! Push her down the stairs! Push her down the stairs!
(She is pushed down the stairs and everyone cheers.)
Rachel: C'mon Daddy, listen to me! It's like, it's like, all of my life, everyone has always told me, 'You're a shoe! You're a shoe, you're a shoe, you're a shoe!'. And today I just stopped and I said, 'What if I don't wanna be a shoe? What if I wanna be a- a purse, y'know? Or a- or a hat! No, I'm not saying I want you to buy me a hat, I'm saying I am a ha- It's a metaphor, Daddy! metaphor:analogy n.
I’m not saying I want you to buy me a hat, it’s a metaphorshoe

下文"it's a metaphor",是个比喻!

Rachel: Look Daddy, it's my life. Well maybe I'll just stay here with Monica.
Monica: Well, I guess we've established who's staying here with Monica...
Well, I guess we've established who's staying here with Monica:Monica has no idea why Rachel said that. But she can't just abandon Rach at this critical time, so when her friends turned to her for a verification, she can't think of nothing to say except that: "Well, it seems to Rachel that I have already agreed on the whole moving in thing( that is established an agreement on her moving in), although I have nothing to do with it!!(Don't look at me in this weird way, guys!)"

Rachel: Well, maybe that's my decision. Well, maybe I don't need your money. Wait!! Wait, I said maybe!!
Well, maybe I don't need your money." Wait!! Wait, I said maybe!"

[Time Lapse, Rachel is breathing into a paper bag.]
Monica: Just breathe, breathe.. that's it. Just try to think of nice calm things...
Phoebe: (sings) Raindrops on roses and rabbits and kittens小猫, (Rachel and Monica turn to look at her.) bluebells野风信子and sleighbells雪橇and- something with mittens棒球or拳击手套...
La la la la...something and noodles with string. These are a few...
Rachel: I'm all better now.
Phoebe: (grins and walks to the kitchen and says to Chandler and Joey.) I helped!
grin n.
Monica: Okay, look, this is probably for the best, y'know? Independence. Taking control of your life. The whole, 'hat' thing.

”be for the best I know it's hard for you to leave him, but it's for the best.
Joey: (comforting her) And hey, you need anything, you can always come to Joey. Me and Chandler live across the hall. And he's away a lot.

Me and Chandler live right across the hall. 按语法讲,Joey应该说Chandler and I… (And he’s away lot)"。

Monica: Joey, stop hitting on her! It's her wedding day!

hit on someone
flirt with someone
to make a pass at someone
to come on to someone
Did you see the way Brian came on to Sally at the office party?"
"Oh, Brian has made a pass at every girl in the office."
"I know, but he hit on Sally particularly hard."
Joey, stop hitting on her! : Slang, to pay unsolicited(adj.
(adj.不必要的) sexual attention to
注意:
Hit on sb.
come on to sb.pass at sb.

Joey: What, like there's a rule or something?
难道还有什么明文规定不成?(What, like there's a rule or something?)。

have the hots for someone
be stuck on someone
have one's cap set for someone
fall for
(The door buzzer sounds and Chandler gets it.)
buzzer n.
Chandler: Please don't do that again, it's a horrible sound.
Paul: (over the intercom) It's, uh, it's Paul.
over the intercom: communication system linking different rooms
Monica: Oh God, is it 6:30? Buzz him in让他进来!
Buzz him in:buzz
Buzz him in: make a signal using the buzzer to let him in
Joey: Who's Paul?
Ross: Paul the Wine Guy, Paul?
Monica: Maybe. Joey: Wait. Your 'not a real date' tonight is with Paul the Wine Guy?
Ross: He finally asked you out?
Monica: Yes!
Chandler: Ooh, this is a Dear Diary moment.
this is a Dear Diary moment:西方人写日记一开头总爱写Dear Diary,......

ohh, this is a Dear Diary moment: when Americans keep the diary(n.日记), normally, the first words they write down must be “Dear Diary”, apparently, Chandler mocks Monica that she is so attracted to Paul with his stereotyped(adj.
Monica: Rach, wait, I can cancel...
Rachel: Please, no, go, that'd be fine!
Monica: (to Ross) Are, are you okay? I mean, do you want me to stay?
Ross: (choked voice) That'd be good...
Choke v.
Monica: (horrified) Really?
horrified
adj.
Ross: (normal voice) No, go on! It's Paul the Wine Guy!
Phoebe: What does that mean? Does he sell it, drink it, or just complain a lot? (Chandler doesn't know.)
(There's a knock on the door and it's Paul.)
Monica: Hi, come in! Paul, this is.. (They are all lined up next to the door.)... everybody, everybody, this is Paul.
line up v.
All: Hey! Paul! Hi! The Wine Guy! Hey!
Chandler: I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name. Paul, was it?
I didn’t catch your name: perceive(v.意识到) by hearing
Monica: Okay, umm-umm, I'll just--I'll be right back, I just gotta go ah, go ah...
Ross: A wandering?
Monica: Change! Okay, sit down. (Shows Paul in) Two seconds.
Phoebe: Ooh, I just pulled out four eyelashes. That can't be good.
eyelash n.
I just pull out four eyelashes: the fringe of hair edging the eyelid(n. Usually used in
plural(adj.
(Monica goes to change
Ross: So Rachel, what're you, uh... what're you up to tonight?
what are you up to tonight? : Busy or occupied with
Rachel: Well, I was kinda supposed to be headed for Aruba on my honeymoon, so nothing!
be headed for v.
be supposed to be done
be supposed to have been done
Ross: Right, you're not even getting your honeymoon, God.. No, no, although, Aruba, this time
of year... talk about your- (thinks) -big lizards... Anyway, if you don't feel like being
alone tonight, Joey and Chandler are coming over to help me put together my new furniture. Lizard n.

come over
我记得有时候come here和come over here, come in和come on in这些不同的说法,有人给解释什么时候有那个over什么时候没那个over,我倒是觉得没那个必要,在我看来就是一样的。

put together
feel like being alone
Chandler: (deadpan) Yes, and we're very excited about it.
deadpan n.无表情的脸/Deadpan: a completely expressionless face
Rachel: Well actually thanks, but I think I'm just gonna hang out here tonight. It's been kinda a long day.
hang out here:呆在这儿。

it's been kinda a long day:完成时态,因为RACH又逃婚,有被老爸骂,这一天过得很痛苦,所以也就很漫长
Ross: Okay, sure.
Joey: Hey Pheebs, you wanna help?
Phoebe: Oh, I wish I could, but I don't want to.
Commercial Break
[Scene: Ross's Apartment, the guys are there assembling furniture.]
Ross: (squatting and reading the instructions) I'm supposed to attach a brackety thing to the side things, using a bunch of these little worm guys. I have no brackety thing, I see no whom guys whatsoever and- I cannot feel my legs腿麻掉了.
squat v.a.
brackety n.
a bunch of 一窜,一束
worm n.
whatsoever pron.
(Joey and Chandler are finishing assembling the bookcase
Joey: (picking up a leftover part) What's this?
leftover n.
Chandler: I have no idea.
(Joey checks that Ross is not looking and dumps it in a plant.)
Joey: Done with the bookcase!
Chandler: All finished!
Ross: (clutching a beer can and sniffing) This was Carol's favorite beer. She always drank it
out of the can, I should have known.
cluth v.
sniff v.
drink it out of the can

Joey: Ross, let me ask you a question. She got the furniture, the stereo, the good TV- what
did you get?
stereo n. 音响
Ross: You guys.
Chandler: Oh, God.
Joey: You got screwed
you got screwed: to cheat or deceive someone
Chandler: Oh my God!
[Scene: A Restaurant, Monica and Paul are eating.]
Monica: Oh my God!
Paul: I know, I know, I'm such an idiot. I guess I should have caught on when she started
going to the dentist four and five times a week. I mean, how clean can teeth get?
should have caught on
catch on v.
I guess I should have caught on when she started going to the dentist four and five times a week, I mean how clean can teeth get? : caught on :Understand clearly, comprehend. Catch on to the fact is also a useful alternative phase you can apply to
Monica: My brother's going through that right now, he's such a mess. How did you get through it?
Paul: Well, you might try accidentally breaking something valuable of hers, say her比如说她的accidentally adv.
Monica: -leg?
Paul: (laughing) That's one way! Me, I- I went for the watch.
went for v.
Monica: You actually broke her watch?
[Scene: Monica's Apartment, Rachel is talking on the phone and pacing.]
pace vi.踱步
Rachel: Barry, I'm sorry... I am so sorry... I know you probably think that this is all about what I said the other day about you making love with your socks on, but it isn't... it isn't, it's about me, and I ju- (She stops talking and dials the phone.) Hi, machine cut me off again... anyway..
cut off 切断
HI, the machine cut me off again: disconnect, terminate, and shut off
the other day
n.前几天
[Scene: Ross's Apartment; Ross is pacing while Joey and Chandler are working on some more furniture.]
Chandler: Look, Ross, you gotta understand, between us we haven't had a relationship that has lasted longer than a Mento.

Here Chandler made a comparison of the longevity of his and Joey's relationship to the lasting of Mento, emphasizing the shortness of their relationship with other girls, which acts kinda as a comfort to Ross.
Ross: You know what the scariest part is? What if there's only one woman for everybody, y'know?
I mean what if you get one woman- and that's it? Unfortunately in my case, there was
only one woman- for her...
Joey: What are you talking about? 'One woman'? That's like saying there's only one flavor口味of ice cream for you. Lemme tell you something, Ross. There's lots of flavors out there. There's Rocky Road, and Cookie Dough制甜酥饼干面团, and Bing! You could get 'em with Jimmies, or nuts核果, or whipped cream生奶油! This is the best thing that ever happened to you! You got married, you were, like, what, eight? Welcome back to the world! Grab a spoon!
you were, like, what, eight是8岁的意思?

Ross: I honestly don't know我真的不知道if I'm hungry or horny.
horny adj. adj.a.
I honestly don’t know if I’m hungry or horny: f eeling great sexual desire
Chandler: Stay out of my freezer! freezer
[Scene: A Restaurant, Monica and Paul are still eating.]
Paul: Ever since she walked out on me, I, uh...
walk out v.
walk out on
Monica: What?..... What, you wanna spell it out with noodles?
spell out v.
ever since she walked out on me, I uh, what? What, you wanna spell it out with noodles? :
Abandon, run out on; make explicit.
Paul: No, it's, it's more of a fifth date kinda revelation(n.

be more of
Monica: Oh, so there is gonna be a fifth date?
Paul: Isn't there?
Monica: Yeah... yeah, I think there is. -What were you gonna say
Paul: Well, ever-ev-... ever since she left me, um, I haven't been able to, uh, perform.
(Monica takes a sip(n.吸吮)of her drink.) ...Sexually.
perform sexually=have a sex
Monica: (spitting out her drink in shock) Oh God, oh God, I am sorry... I am so sorry...
spit out v.吐出
in shock
Paul: It's okay...
Monica: I know being spit on is probably not what you need right now. Um... how long?
Paul: Two years.
Monica: Wow! I'm-I'm-I'm glad you smashed her watch!
Paul: So you still think you, um... might want that fifth date?
Monica: (pause)...Yeah. Yeah, I do.
[Scene: Monica's Apartment, Rachel is watching Joanne Loves Chaci.]
Priest on TV: We are gathered here today to join Joanne Louise Cunningham and Charles, Chachi-Chachi-Chachi, Arcola in the bound of holy matrimony
in bound of holy matrimony:结为夫妇,在神圣婚姻的约束,范围内
Rachel: Oh...see... but Joanne loved Chachi! That's the difference!
Oh...see... but Joanne loved Chachi! That's the difference! :What Rachel said is funny is because Rachel here was sarcastic about her running away from altar. She was deeply moved by the true love between Joanne and Chachi which leads to a successful holy matrimony, while she and Barry had almost everything but love and that results in her disappointment in their matrimony. So she felt right to have escaped from a doomed marrige with a person she would never love. [Scene: Ross's Apartment, they're all sitting around and talking.]
Ross: (scornful) Grab a spoon. Do you know how long it's been since I've grabbed a spoon? Do the words 'Billy, don't be a hero' mean anything to you?
Billy don't be a hero 这是一首著名的70年代反战歌曲,描写的是越战中,一个女孩希望自己的fiance Billy平安归来,don't be a hero in the war,但最后Billy还是在战争中失去了他年青的生命. (Billy,don't be a hero)”。

Do the words’Billy, don’t be a hero’mean anything to you? : A hit(n.歌曲) by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods in 1974, written about a young man named Billy who headed to Vietnam War and had to leave his lovely fiancée(n.<法>未婚妻). Here, I assume, Ross likens it to(与……相比) his tragic love affair in a sappy(adj.精力充沛的,易动感情的) manner, you know, his wife is a lesbian
Ross: Y'know, here's the thing是这样的. Even if I could get it together enough to- to ask a woman out,... who am I gonna ask? (He gazes out of the window.)
get it together

[Cut to Rachel staring out of her window.]
Commercial Break。
