常用的动词,如:hear, see, arrive, return, get to, look, open, close, leave, turn around, walk等,表示一个极短暂动作。

Hearing their teacher's voice, the pupils stopped talking at once.(= On hearing their teacher's voice… = When they heard their teacher's voice, the pupils…)

Don't be careless when /while having an exam. = Don't be careless in having an exam. = Don't be careless when / while you are having an exam.

Having finished his homework the boy was allowed to watch TV play.
After having finished his homework, the boy…
After /when he had finished his homework, the boy

e.g. It was yesterday that he met Li Ping.

2. not...until...
It is/was not until+被强调部分+that+其它部分:
e.g. 普通句:He didn't go to bed until/till his wife came back.
It was not until his wife came back that he went to bed.
It is/was...that...

e.g. Do sit down.

21. With their large glass windows and clear views of the hospital’s newest arrivals, it’s hard to imagine hospitals without newborn nurseries. But how did this slightly unusual, if precious, concept of putting babies on show come into being?
Well, they’re not really for putting babies on show. Firstly, they were created as an area for nurses to take care of all of the new babies, separate from their mothers. Newborn nurseries have been around pretty much since moms started having babies in hospitals. In the early 1900s, hospitals replaced homes as the primary place to give birth. Hospitals built maternity wards(产科病房), and those wards had nurseries with windows.
According to , a 1943 publication gave two main purposes for the nurseries. The first purpose was to allow the s to see the new babies. The windows, however, were to keep the babies safe and clean while they were being admired by s. And that sanitary concern is right and reasonable. Babies’ immune systems(免疫系统) are not yet developed, which has to do with the frightening reason you should be careful about letting people kiss your new baby. However, the article does admit that solid walls would be even
more effective at keeping bacteria and viruses out than windows. Not to mention they would be more cost-effective. So, yeah the primary purpose is still to look at the cute babies. Some hospitals would offer individual viewings so that s could have some quality time with their new member. In the mid- to late twentieth century, these nursery viewings were often the first time fathers got to see their new babies.
Today, though, the nurseries mean a lot to many hospital visitors and family members. Dotti James claims that "the nursery window has become a destination for patients and families from other parts of the hospital experiencing a health crisisStanding outside the nursery, seeing the babiescan give hope to families trying to deal successfully with something difficult." It’s pretty much a universal truth that healthy babies are an immediate mood booster(令人鼓舞的事情).

22. Kylie Kirkpatrick was getting ready for work when her 9-year old son, Ryan Kyote, burst into her bedroom. The Napa, California-based third-grader had just watched a news story about a kindergarten student in Indiana who was forced to return her school lunch because her account balance couldn't cover the meal.
"Ryan was upset," Kirkpatrick told TODAY Parents. “He said, 'Mom, how does something like this happen?' Then he asked what he could do to help."
After a bit of brainstorming, Kyote-pronounced “coyote" -decided he would use six months' worth of allowance he had saved up to pay off the lunch debt of his entire class at West Park Elementary School. The bill came up to S74.50.
Though Kyote had been eyeballing a new pair of basketball sneakers, this was far more important to him. So, on May 24, he happily donated his six months of savings to the Napa Valley Unified School District food services department.
"Ryan told them, 'Please let my friends know that they no longer owe any money," Kirkpatrick recalled. "Lunch is his favorite part of the day and it broke his heart to think that it's a stressful time for some children."
The fourth-grader-to-be wanted his act of kindness to be unknown to others, but his proud mother couldn't resist sharing a photo on Twitter, where it spread quickly.
"Give this kid his money back. No child should be covering lunch debt for his class with his allowance," wrote one person. Added another: "Love this story ... Special kid."
Practicing good deeds is nothing new for Kyote. " I'll go into the garage and Ryan's bike is missing because he gave it to a friend in need," Kirkpatrick, a sign language interpreter, told TODAY parents. "One time, a friend didn't have any shoes that fit, so Ryan gave him a pair of his own shoes."
Recently, an investor got wind of what Kyote had done for his classmates and he contacted Kirkpatrick. “He wanted to give Ryan money to put in his savings account," she said.
Kyote, who recently lost his father to ALS, had another idea.
"Ryan told the man to pay it forward," Kirkpatrick said. "So he made a donation to the ALS Association. I can't even begin to tell you what that meant to Ryan. All he wants is to make the world a better place."
34. How did Ryan feel after watching the news story, about a kindergarten student?
A. Shocked.
B. Relieved.

D. Bored.
35. Instead of buying a new pair of sneakers, Ryan was more concerned about ______.
