At the top of a three-story brick building, Sue and Johnsy had their studio. One of the girls was from Maine; the other from California. They had met in an Eighth Street restaurant, and found
their tastes in art, chicory salad and bishop sleeves so much in tune that the joint studio resulted. That was in May.
In November, a cold, unseen stranger, whom the doctors called “pneumonia”, stalked about the district, touching one here and there with his icy fingers. Johnsy was among his victims.
One morning the busy doctor invited Sue into the hallway with a bushy, gray eyebrow.
“She has one chance in ten,” he said. “And that chance is for her to want to live. Your little lady has made up her mind that she’s not going to get well. Has she anything on her mind?”
“She wanted to paint the Bay of Naples some day,” said Sue.
“Paint? Bosh! Has she anything on her mind worth thinking about twice? A man, for instance?”
“No, doctor; there is nothing of the kind.”
“Well,” said the doctor. “I will do all that science can acc omplish. But whenever my patient begins to count the carriage in her funeral procession, I subtract 50 per cent from the power of medicines.” After the doctor had gone, Sue cried.
Johnsy lay, scarcely making a movement under the bedclothes, with her face toward the window. She was looking out and counting—counting backward.
“Twelve,” she said, and a little later “eleven,” and then “ten,”and “nine,” and then “eight,’ and “seven,” almost together.
Sue looked out of the window. What was there to count? There was only a bare, dreary yard to be seen, and an old, old ivy vine climbed half way up the brick wall of the brick house. The cold breath of autumn had blown away its leaves, leaving it almost bare.
“Six,’ said Johnsy, in almost a whisper. “They’re falling faster now. Three days ago there were almost a hundred. It made my head ache to count them. But now it’s easy. There goes another one. There are only five left now.”
“Five what, dear?”
“Leaves, on the ivy vine. When the last one falls I must go, too. I’ve known that for three days. Didn’t the doctor tell you?”
“Oh, I’ve never heard of such nonsense. Don’t be so silly. Why, the doctor told me this morning that your chances for getting well soon were ten to one! Try to take some soup now, and let Sue go and buy pork chops for her sick child.”

Rice is an important part of many people’s diets. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health in Massachusetts have released a report about rice. It shows that eating white rice increases the risk of Type Two diabetes (糖尿病). However, eating brown rice reduces the risk of the disease.
The World Health Organization says more than two hundred and twenty million people worldwide have diabetes. Type Two diabetes results when the body cannot effectively use the sugar it produces.
More than thirty-nine thousand men and one hundred and fifty-seven thousand women took part in the study. They were asked about their diet and day-to-day activities, as well as any pre-existing diseases. The study found that the people who ate five or more servings of white rice per week had a seventeen percent increased risk of developing Type Two diabetes. But those who ate two or more servings of brown rice a week had an eleven percent reduced risk of getting the disease.
Brown rice is the grain in its natural form. White rice results after it has been refined. This involves removing the outer cover. Only the inner white kernel is left. White rice is often enriched to replace some nutrients lost during the refining process.
Qi Sun is the lead writer of the report. He says the outer parts of brown rice slow down the work of the body’s digestive enzymes (消化酶) into starch. This means that the release of sugar into the bloodstream is slower after eating brown rice compared to white rice.
A diet of foods that quickly release sugar into the bloodstream has been linked with a greater risk of Type Two diabetes. The exact reason for this is not known.
Doctor Sun says less refined grains have more nutritional value than refined grains. He says replacing white rice with whole grains like whole wheat or barley could result in a thirty-six percent lower chance of developing Type Two diabetes. He says people should replace white rice and other refined carbohydrates with whole grains whenever possible.
However, brown rice does not last as long as white rice because of the oil-rich layer of bran. This makes it less usable in poor communities. The International Rice Research Institute is working to develop kinds of white rice whose starch is released more slowly.
63. What is the exact reason of Type Two diabetes?
A. Eating too much white rice.
B. Sugar in the bloodstream.
C. digestive enzymes in the starch.
D. It is still unknown to us.
64. What does the underlined word “refined” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. Processed.
B. Cut.
C. Struck.
D. Developed.
65. Which of the following is true?
A. White rice has more nutritional value than whole grains.
B. The oil-rich layer of bran can prevent the brown rice from going bad.
C. Eating brown rice may reduce the risk of developing Type Two diabetes.
D. The outer cover of brown rice will speed the release of sugar into the bloodstream.
66. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The importance of rice
B. Brown rice and white rice
C. Diabetes and rice eating
D. Sugar and diabetes

A chocolate printer that allows sweet lovers to create 3D desserts by themselves is to go on sale at a cost of 2,500 pounds.
The machine squirts (喷射) out chocolate and, via computer instructions, allows the user to build any shape they like out of the food. But makers Choc Edge have missed the Easter rush. Even so, they hope the printer will be snapped up by retailers (零售商) immediately they come to the market. Britain’s biggest chocolatiers Thornton’s have already said they are interested. Because of the high cost, however, few individuals are likely to buy one. But the device could one day allow people to design their own 3D objects after submitting their designs on a website. Dr Hao, founder of Choc Edge came up with a prototype (原型) last year and has only just perfected it so t hat it can now go on sale. “We’ve improved and simplified the machine, so now it is really easy to use,” he told the BBC. “You just need to melt some chocolate, fill a syringe (注射器) that is stored in the printer, and get creative printing of your chocolate.”
3D printing is a technology where a three dimensional object is created by building up successive layers of material. The technology is already used in industry to produce plastic and metal products, but this is the first time the principles have been applied to chocolate. The research has presented many challenges. Chocolate is not an easy material to work with because it requires accurate heating and cooling cycles. Dr Hao said, “What makes this technology special is that users will be able to design and make their own products. From reproducing the shape of a child’s favourite toy to a friend’s face, the possibilities are endless. It could be developed to help consumers design many products from different materials, but we’ve started with chocola te as it is easily available, low cost and harmless.” “There is also no wastage as any spoilage (损坏物) can be eaten.” Dr Hao added, “Eventually we may see many mass-produced products replaced by unique designs created by the customer.”
EPSRC chief executive Professor Dave Delpy said, “This is a good example of how creative research can be applied to create new manufacturing and retail ideas. By combining developments in engineering with the
commercial potential of the digital economy We can see the new market prospect (前景)—creating new jobs and, in this case, the chocolate printer is called sweet business opportunities.”
67. Which is the advantage of the chocolate printer?
A. It is easily available, low cost and harmless.
B. It mainly produces children’s favourite toys.
C. The user can build the shape they like via computer instructions.
D. The designs made by it are the same as many mass-produced products.
68. What can we conclude from the passage?
A. The printer sold well during last Easter.
B. The technology of 3D printing promises a good future.
C. The printer was perfected and went on sale many years ago.
D. It’s the first time that the technology has been used in industry.
69.Dave Delpy’s attitude towards the chocolate printer is __________.
A. doubtful
B. approval
C. negative
D. critical
70. We can conclude that this passage is a __________.
A. science fiction

Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor, scientist and businessman who invented many things that greatly influenced life around the world, such as the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. Edison has been recognized as the creator of the first industrial research laboratory. It is he who came up with the concept of providing electricity for home. His first power station was on Manhattan Island, New York.
Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, and grew up in Port Huron, Michigan. He was the seventh and last child of his family. When he was young, Edison stayed at home and was taught by his mother. Edison recalled later, “My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me; and I felt I had someone to live for, someone I must not disappoint.” During his childhood, he suffered from scarlet fever which affected his hearing.
Young Edison sold candy and newspapers on trains running from Port Huron to Detroit, and he sold vegetables to supplement his income. These jobs, though insignificant, inspired him greatly. He realized that he had a talent for business. These talents eventually made him founder of 14 companies, including General Electric, which is still in existence and is the largest publicly traded company in the world.
Edison started as a telegraph operator and this was the field in which he came up with the first invention. The invention which first gained him fame was the phonograph in 1877. The invention seemed magical, as nothing similar had ever been thought of before. Funded by the successful sale of the telegraph at a price of $10,000, Edison built his own research laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey.
The laboratory expanded rapidly over the decade. In 1892, it was confirmed that Edison was the official inventor of the carbon microphones, which was used in all telephones. Although he attempted to make use of X-rays to take radiographs, he quit the project and admitted his fear of X-rays in public.
Thomas Edison died of diabetes at his home in New Jersey, on October 18, 1931 and in honor of his contributions, Life magazine (USA), in a special double issue in 1997, placed Edison first in the list of the “100 Most Important People in the Last 1000 Years”, noting that the light bulb he promoted “lit up the world”.

With the development of economy, more and more families have their own cars, which makes it difficult for people to park their cars in public places.
As can be seen from the cartoon, a driver becomes annoyed when seeing the notice saying “No vacancy”. There is no doubt that i t’s very convenient for people to go to work or take their children to school by car. Despite the advantages cars have, car parking problems are becoming increasingly familiar to the general public. I hold the opinion that the severe shortage of parking lots is influencing the living environment of those who live in cities.
To solve car parking problems, various measures should be taken by the government. In my view, it’s high time that more parking lots should be constructed to reduce the problems. Besides, people should be encouraged to go to work by bike or on foot if they live near the working place. Only when these measures are taken can the problems of car parking be tackled.。
