After having gone through an electrical accident, which made him become not only blind
but also deaf, James Franco’s world became completely dark and quiet for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end
to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he
regained the will to live.
One afternoon in hot summer, he was having a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was
struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up 20 minutes later,
lying
face down in muddy water. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a tree and a muddy road. When Mrs. Franco came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first
time in nearly ten years.
Word of James getting back his sense of sight and hearing quickly spread and many
doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a compelling answer as to why this should happen. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since
James lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to
regain them was by another sudden shock.
21. The reason why James attempted to kill himself was that _________.
A. a terrible electrical accident happened to him
B. he had to live in a dark and silent world
C. he was struck by the lightning once more
D. nobody in the world cared about him
22. What was James doing when he was struck by the lightning?
A. Sheltering from the rain under a tree.
B. Putting an end to his life.
C. Taking a walk with a stick.
D. Lying on the ground.
23. What does the underlined word “compelling” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. wrong
B. convincing
C. unexplained
D. determined
24. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Terrible Electrical Accident
B. James Franco and His Wife
C. An Unforgettable Experience
D. What a Sudden Shock

Dolphins live in a dark underwater world. It’s often impossible to see each other or anything else around them, so sound plays an important role in their survival. To communicate
with each other, dolphins produce all kinds of sounds.
高二英语第4页共10 页
Only other dolphins understand what the sounds mean. Scientists haven’t uncovered their secret communication, except for one kind of whistle. It might last less than a second, but this
whistle is a big deal. Why? Because these whistles are actually names of dolphins - and every
dolphin has one. Scientists call these sounds a “signature whistle.” When other dolphins hear
the whistle, they know which dolphin is whistling.
Dolphins often hunt by themselves but still need to stay connected to the group. Since they can’t always see each other, dolphins use their signature whistles to check in with other dolphins hundreds of yards away. “In coastal areas, dolphins exchange whistles even when they’re a third of a mile apart,” says Greg Campbell, who studies animals. That means dolphins
shout out to group members that might be nearly five football fields away.
What’s amazing is who names the baby dolphin. Not the mother. Not an auntie dolphin or another group member. Scientists believe the baby dolphin itself comes up with the signature whistle. Like human babies, a baby dolphin plays with sounds throughout its first year. While
testing its sound skills, a baby dolphin is doing something amazing. It’s creating or figuring out
its signature whistle. How or why it chooses its signature whistle is not clear. Studies show that
most of the time the signature whistle is nothing like its mother’s or group members’whistles.
When the baby dolphin is about a year old, its signature whistle is set. The baby dolphin repeats it often so the other dolphins learn to recognize it.
Deciphering( 破译) dolphin names is just the beginning of figuring out what dolphins communicate about. Do they chat about sharks? Discuss the tides? Maybe they even have a
name for people. Someday scientists are to decipher the rest of dolphins’ communication. 25.Sound is important for dolphins because of ______.
A. their poor sense of direction
B. their living environment
C. their strong enemies
D. their big groups
26.The dolphin’s signature whistle ______.
A. can last a long time

27.The author writes the text mainly to ______.
A. encourage readers to study dolphins
B. tell all the information of dolphins
C. show how lovely and clever dolphins are
D. introduce a special sound made by dolphins
28.A baby dolphin gets its name ______.
A. soon after it was born
B. according to its size
C. all by itself
D. with the help of its group

It’s against the law for the police to attach a GPS unit to your car without your permission,
as the U.S. Supreme Court settled in 2012. But if the police are in hot pursuit of a bank robber
or other escaping criminals that threaten public safety, a GPS tracker is acceptable. But exactly
高二英语第6页共10 页
how can the police GPS track a car that is moving fast?
The answer to that question comes from StarChase, a new police technology being used
by a small but growing number of law enforcement (强化) agencies. It allows the police to
fire
glue-covered GPS bullet-like projectiles (发射体) from an air gun fixed in their police cars. If
the GPS tracker makes contact with the escaping robber’s car, it’ll stick no matter how
fast the
vehicle is going. That way, the police will have a constant read on the car’s location and heading. Besides simply apprehending (逮捕) criminals, it’s believed that this new technology
could help save lives. If the police successfully fire a GPS unit at a speeding criminal,
they can
avoid a high-risk chase. Chases can be incredibly dangerous to all involved, including
bystanders and other drivers. Once the GPS bullet connects, there’s no need for the chase
any
longer.
Now a GPS-loaded gun isn’t cheap. Police departments need to pay about $5,000 per
vehicle for the technology, and individual GPS bullets cost as much as $250 each. That may sound expensive, but remember : The alternative is often thousands of dollars in property damage, and great human cost in injury and lost life. According to StarChase, their GPS
bullet
system has an apprehension rate of 80% without any report of injury or property damage. If you’d like to learn more about the StarChase system,Popular Mechanics has just published a good article about it. There’s also plenty more information available at the company’s website.
32. When the GPS bullet sticks to the escaping robber’s car, the police can________.
A. know the car’s condition
B. ensure the robber’s safety
C. play a fair game with the robber
D. know the car’s position and direction
33. The GPS bullets could help save lives mainly because________.
A. the bullets won’t hurt people
B. they can make the robber’s car stop
C. the police can stop the dangerous chase
D. they have more advantages than normal bullets
34. From the text we can learn that GPS bullets__________.
A. are useful for the police
B. are widely used in America
C. can control the rising crime rate
D. can replace the police in the future
35. In which part of a newspaper can we read the text?
A. Life
B. Nature
C. Fashion
D. Technology

We all know that we should use smart study strategies(策略) for learning. __36__ The tips below come from scientific studies.
Reduce Your Cell Phone Use
高二英语第7页共10 页
It should come as no surprise that spending too much time on the cell phone can affect
your grades. __37__
Studies show that there is a relationship between cell phone use, anxiety, and student performance. Increased time on the phone seems to be linked to increased feelings of anxiety, and that leads to lower student performance.
__38__ Students who spend more time on phones, in other words, tend to be less active —which also causes a build-up of stress and anxiety.
In fact, science also shows that students who take part in aerobic exercise( 有氧活动) benefit from better long-term memory. __39__ By reducing the anxiety in your life and getting
better physical shape, you’ll free up your brain to learn and remember.
Use Music and Actions
The more active you become when it comes to studying, the more you will be able to remember the information. __40__ And singing new vocabulary helps you recall more easily, according to one study. It’s certainly worth a try!
Another study shows that you can benefit by taking your class notes by hand instead of using a keyboard to type your notes. The act of writing words out by hand enhances the comprehension of concepts.
A. If you’re studying foreign languages, it seems that singing is helpful.
B. But what is the science behind effective study strategies?
C. But the relationship between phones and grades is not simple.
D. Common sense tells us that students need to get enough sleep to perform well in school.
E. Another relationship has been noticed between increased time on cell phones and a decrease
in physical activity.
F. Short-term memory is the goal for truly learning from the material that you cover in class.
G. It’s just a good policy to limit time on cell phones and increase physical activity. 第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分40 分)

There is always something that we cannot forget and it can change our attitude towards life. When I was young, my mother liked to make breakfast food for dinner at times. And I remember one night in particular when she had made dinner after a long, hard day at 41 . On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely
42 toast in front of my dad. I remember 43 to see if anyone noticed! 44 all my dad
did was reach for his toast, 45 at my mom and ask me how my day was at school… I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember 46 him spread butter and jam on
that toast and eat every bite!
When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom 47 to my
dad for burning the toast. And I’ll never 48 what he said: “Honey, I love burned toast.”高二英语第8页共10 页
Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really 49 his toast burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, “Your Mom got 50 a hard day at work
today and she’s really 51 . And besides, a burned toast never 52 anyone!”
53 is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. I’m not the best at anything, and
I forget 54 and anniversaries just like everyone else. But what I’ve learned over the years is that learning to accept each other’s 55 — and choosing to celebrate each other’s differences — is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing and 56 relationship where a burned toast isn’t a deal-breaker!
We could extend this to any 57 . In fact, understanding is the 58 of any
relationship, whether it is a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!
“Don’t put the key to your 59 in someone else’s pocket— keep it in your own.”
So please pass me a toast, and yes, a burned one will 60 be fine!

Dear John,
How have you been lately? I really miss the days we spent together. It was so nice to be with you. However, some of your living and working habits, I have noticed, are not good enough for your health. As one of your best friends, I do hope that you can make some changes.
First and foremost, you had better rebalance your work and life, and avoid staying up too late. Besides, never eat too much junk food, which I think will contribute to your weight. More importantly, do not sit before your computer, surfing the Net for too long, since it will do harm to your eyesight. Instead, you may take part in more outdoor activities. I am sure you will enjoy a healthier life by improving your habits actively.
Best wishes and keep in touch.
Yours,
Li Hua。
