21.(6分)Children in rural areas of Cambodia often suffer from or even die of preventable illnesses because there is not any soap available.
In 2014,Samir Lakhani,an American college student, saw the issue while volunteering in a Cambodian village.“I remember quite vivi dly a mother bathing her newborn baby with laundry powder, which is so harmful to the skin,”said Lakhani.“It’s difficult for rural Cambodians to access soap.First is affordability. If you earn only$1.50 every day,you won’t spend $1 on a bar of soap. Then come s access. The demand is so low that local shops don’t stock soap. The last reason, because many Cambodians don’t really understand where diseases come from, they don’t know how to prevent them, including using soap.”
After figuring out a solution to the problem:the barely-used soap in hotels,Lakhani started asking hotels to donate leftover soap.“They were all eager to help,”he explained.
Lakhani registered Eco-Soap Bank shortly afterwards.Soon,he received enough funds to hire disadvantaged Cambodian women to collect and reproduce the used soap.
Today, the organization has four recycling centers across the country, providing jobs to 3 local women. And so far, some 174,000 bars of soap have been donated, about 24,000 pounds of soap has been recycled, and hygiene(卫生)has been improved for about 661,000 people.“We are killing three birds with one stone,”Lakhani said.
When it comes to the future of Eco-Soap Bank,Lakhani said,“We’ve just scratched the ck of hygiene is not something unique to Cambodia. The demand for improved hygiene in the developing world is huge, and much remains to be done. We’re looking at seven countries to expand to in the near future.”

22.(8分)Life may have evolved on at least three planets within a newly discovered solar system 1 light years from Earth. Astronomers at the NASA have discovered no less than seven roughly Earth-sized worlds orbiting a dwarf star in the system. Scientists had previously identified a tiny number of "exoplanets", which are believed to have the qualities needed to support life. However, the new system contains an unprecedented(前所未有) number of Earth-sized, probably rocky planets, and is being acknowledged as an "accelerated leap forward" in the search for extraterrestrial (外星球的)life.
Three of the new planets are said to be particularly promising because there might exist oceans. Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA, told a press conference in Washington: "This gives us a hint that finding a second Earth is not a matter of 'if', but 'when'."
The planets were discovered using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, which was able to track how fast each of the planets crossed the star Trappist-l and completed an orbit. From this the research team calculated how far the planets were from their star, and therefore how likely they are to be habitable.
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope is already being used to search for atmospheres around the planets. Future telescopes, including the proposed
European Extremely Large Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope, may be powerful enough to discover markers of life, such as oxygen in the atmospheres of exoplanets.
Astronomers believe there could be as many as 2 billion potentially habitable worlds in our galaxy, the Milky Way. Prof Zurbuchen said that now was a "gold-rush phase" in the search for these exoplanets.
1、What makes the new discovery significant?
A.Ample markers of life.B.The potential to support life.
C.Great distance from Earth.D.The search for extraterrestrial life.
2、What helps explore atmospheres around the exoplanets?
A.Spitzer Space Telescope.B.Hubble Space Telescope.
C.European Extremely Large Telescope.D.James Webb Space Telescope.
3、What may be the best title for the text?
A.New Solar System Found B.Second Earth Discovered
C.Why to Explore Outer Space D.Gold-Rush Stage to Come 23.(8分)It’s 8 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2028, and you are headed for a business appointment 300 miles away. You step into your circle, two- passenger air-cushion car, press a series of buttons and the national traffic computer notes your destination, figures out the current traffic situation and signals your car to slide out of the garage. Hands free, you sit back and begin to read the morning paper — which is flashed on a flat TV screen over the car’s dashboard. Tapping a button changes the page.
The car speeds up to 150 mph in the city’s countryside, and then hits 250 mph in less built-up areas, driving over the smooth plastic road. You fly past a string of cities, many of them covered by the new domes (圆屋顶) that keep them evenly climatized all year round. Traffic is heavy, typically, but there’s no need to worry. The traffic computer, which sends and receives signals to and from all cars on the road between cities, keeps vehicles at least 50 yds apart. There hasn’t been an accident since the system began.
Suddenly your TV phone buzzes. A business partner wants a sketch of a new kind of impeller your firm is putting out for sports boats. Y ou reach for your case and draw the diagram with a pencil-thin infrared flashlight (红外线闪光灯) on what looks like a TV screen lining the back of the case. The diagram is sent to a similar screen in your
partner’s office, 200 miles away. He presses a button and a fixed copy of the sketch rolls out of the machine. He wishes you good luck at the coming meeting and signs off.
Ninety minutes after leaving your home, you slide beneath the dome of your destination city. Your car slows down and heads for an outer-core office building where you’ll meet your colleagues. After you get out, the vehicle parks itself in a garage to await your return. Private cars aren’t allowed inside most city cores. Moving sidewalks and electrams (电车) carry the public from one location to another.
1、The traffic computer in your car can ________.
A.keep your car at a safe distance from other cars
B.keep your car at the same speed in different situations
C.keep your car receiving signals of TV programs
D.keep your car driving avoiding heavy traffic
2、Why are the cities covered by the new domes?
A.To prevent people from being wet in the rain.
B.To stop the climate of the cities changing violently all year.
C.To protect the travelers against the strong sunshine.
D.To make the city have the same weather all year.
3、What will the city be like in the future?
A.No accidents will happen because of heavy traffic.
B.The sidewalk can move itself up and down.
C.The road is built with the plastic material.
D.The car parks itself on a dome to wait for your return.
4、The third paragraph mainly tells ________.
A.you are lucky to sell products of your company
B.you receive best wishes from your business partner
C.you can do business with a newly invented pencil
D.you can do business even on the road in the future
24.(8分)Throughout our daily lives, we have known plenty of people and will know more. But how can we tell if someone is trustworthy? In a paper published recently in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researcher gave us the answer.
The researchers asked 401 adults from the United States to fill out a questionnaire
measuring their guilt-proneness(内疚倾向) in different situations as well as several other qualities, and then play a short online game. In this game, Player 1 is given $1, which they can choose to give to Player2. Any money given to Player 2 is then automatically increased to $2.50. Player 2 can then decide whether to keep all of the money or behave in a trustworthy way by returning a portion of the money to Player 1. The researchers found more guilt-prone people were more likely to share the money with Player1. Actually, in follow-up studies, guilt-proneness predicted trustworthiness better than other personality qualities the researchers measured.
Why might guilt lead to trustworthy behavior? The researchers found people who were guilt-prone also reported feeling an obligation to act in ethical(合乎道德的) and responsible ways while interacting(互动) with their partners in the game. People who are guilt-prone tend to avoid engaging in behavior that might harm or disappoint others. If they do something bad, guilt encourages them to try to make things right again.
Then, how can we use this research to ascertain whether someone is trustworthy? “One way to do this might be observe how they respond to experience regret,” lead author Emma Levine, assistant professor at the University of Chicago Levine, explains. Another way is to ask them to describe a difficult dilemma they faced in the past, suggests co-author Taya Cohen, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. This is particularly effective, Cohen and her colleagues have found, because it allows us to see if they’re concerned about the effects their actions have on others.
1、What may make others feel that we are reliable according to the text?
A.Our good qualities to help them out.
B.Our tendency to experience guilt.
C.Our kind attitude towards them.
D.Our team spirit in the game.
2、What may connect guilt with trustworthy behavior?
A.A sense of responsibility.
B.A feeling of disappointment.
C.The way one interacts with others.
D.The ability to tell right from wrong.
3、What does the underlined word “ascertain” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Ask B.Express
C.Describe D.Determine
4、How is the text organized and developed?
A.By providing background.
B.By making a lot of comparisons.
C.By answering the raised questions.
D.By analyzing effects of guilt-proneness.
25.(10分)No one knew Prince Edward Street as well as Pierre Dupin. He had delivered milk to the families on the street for thirty years. For the past fifteen years a large white horse named Joseph pulled his milk wagon. Joseph was a gentle horse with beautiful spirit shining out of its eyes, so Pierre named him after Saint Joseph.
Every morning at five, Pierre arrived at the milk company's stables to find Joseph waiting for him, Pierre would call, “Good morning, my old friend.”,as he climbed into his seat, while Joseph turned his head toward the driver. And the two would go proudly down the street. Without any order from Pierre, the wagon would roll down three streets. Then it turned right for two streets, before turning left to Saint Catherine Street. The horse finally stopped at the first house on Prince Edward Street. There, Joseph would wait perhaps thirty seconds for Pierre to get down off his seat and put a bottle of milk at the front door.
Pierre knew every one of the forty families that got milk. The cooks knew that Pierre could not read or write; so, instead of leaving orders in an empty milk bottle, they simply sang out if they needed an extra bottle.
Pierre also had a wonderful memory. When he arrived at the stable he always remembered to tell Jacques, the foreman(领班) of the stables, “The Pacquins took an extra bottle this morning; the Lemoines bought a pint of cream ...” Most of the dr ivers had to make out the weekly bills and collect the money. But Jacques, liking Pierre, never asked him to do this.
One day the president of the milk company came to inspect the early morning milk deliveries.Jacques pointed to Pierre and said:”See how th e horse listens and how he turns his head toward Pierre? See the look in that horse's eyes? Y ou know, I think those two share a secret. I have often felt it. He is getting old. Maybe he ought to be given a rest, and a small pension.”
“But of course,” the president laughed. “He has been on this job now for thirty
years. All who know him love him. Tell him it is time he rested. He will get his pay every week as before.”
But Pierre refused to leave his job. He said his life would be nothing if he could not dri ve Joseph every day. “We are two old men,” he said to Jacques. “Let us wear out together. When Joseph is ready to leave, then I too will do so.”
Then one cold morning Jacques had terrible news for Pierre. Jacques said,”Pierre, your horse, Joseph, didn't wa ke up. He was very old, Pierre.” Jacques said softly. “He is over in his stall, looking very peaceful. Go over and see him.” Pierre took one step forward, then turned. “No ... no ... I cannot see Joseph again. You ...,you don't understand, Jacques.”
For years Pierre had worn a large heavy cap that came down low over his eyes.It kept out the bitter cold wind. Now, Jacques looked into Pierre's eyes and he saw something that shocked him. He saw a dead, lifeless look in them.
“Take the day off, Pierre,” Jacque s said. Pierre walked to the corner and stepped into the street. There was a warning shout from the driver of a big truck ... there was the screech(尖锐的刹车声) of rubber tires as the truck tried to stop. But Pierre heard nothing.
Five minutes later a doctor sai d, “He's dead ...,killed instantly.”
“I couldn't help it,” the truck driver said. “He walked in front of my truck. He never saw it, I guess. Why, he walked as though he were blind.”
The doctor bent down. “Blind?Of course, this man has been blind for five years.” He turned to Jacques, “Didn't you know he was blind?”
“No ...no ...” Jacques said softly. “None of us knew. Only one ... only one knew-a friend of his, named Joseph ... It was a secret, I think, just between those two.”
