Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea.People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.
Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.
At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea.Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady her friends thought they must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.
At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess (公爵夫人) found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling〞 as she called it. She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born.

In the last 500 years, nothing about people---not their clothes, ideas, or languages—has changed as much as what they eat. The original chocolate drink was made from the seeds of the cocoa tree〔可可树〕by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500’s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became fashionable. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today.
The potato is also from the New World.Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the “Potato Famine(饥荒)〞of 1845—1846, and thousands more were forced to leave their homeland and move to America.
There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the world’s largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in Colombia and other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia, a country in Africa. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400’s.
According to an Arabic legend, coffee was discovered when a person named Kaldi noticed that his goats were attracted to the red berries on a coffee bush. He tried one and experienced the “wi de-awake〞 feeling that one-third of the world’s population now starts the day with.

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don’t understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and they seldom give their children a free hand.
It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they tend to forget how they themselves felt when young.
For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Older people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.
When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry with their choice in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble: it is just that they feel cut off from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own, and if their parents do not like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say, “ Yes〞to what you do. All you want is to be felt alone and do what you like. It is natural enough,
after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control.
If you plan to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.
71.___ are to blame for the quarrels between parents and their children according to this passage.
A.Parents B.Young people
C.Neither parents nor their children D.Both parents and their children 72.According to the passage, young people prefer to ___.
A.ask for advice before they really start to do anything.

D.be very strict with themselves
73.Young people like to have clothes, entertainment and music in their way, because ____.
A.they want to make their parents happy.
B.they try to get their parents to believe them.
C.they want to try on something new and look different from the older.
D.they want to test whether they are cleverer than old people.
74.According to the passage, young people want to make a new culture of their own, because ___. A.they don’t feel they belong to th e world of the older people.
B.they do not want to get into trouble.
C.they feel they are as clever as old people.
D.they want to show they have grown up.
75.If a young man intends to control his own life, it’s better for him to ___.

Changes in People’s Diet
This table shows that there were great changes in people’s diet from 1994 to 1998. The amount of grain they ate fell year by year, and at the same time they increased their consumption of milk and meat.
There were two main reasons for these changes. First, people were better off and could afford more expensive food with better nutrition. Second, more and more people began to pay attention to the quality of their diet. They believe eating in a scientific way did good to their health.
These changes in people’s diet show that their living conditions improved greatly between 1994 and 1998. We are sure that they will live a happier and healthier life.

Once a neighbor stole one of George Washington’s horses. Washington went with a police officer to the neighbor’s farm to get the horse, but the neighbor refused to give the horse up; he claimed that it was his horse.
Washington placed both of his hands over the eyes of the horse and said to the neighbor, “If this is your horse, then you must tell us in which eye he is blind.〞
“In the right eye!〞 the neighbor said.
Washington took his hand from the right eye of the horse and showed the police officer that the horse was not blind in the right eye.
“Oh, I made a mistake,〞 said the neighbor. “He is blind in the left eye.〞
Washington then showed that the horse was not blind in the left eye, either.
“I made another mistake,〞 said the neighbor.
“Yes,〞 said the police officer, “and you have also proved that the horse does not belong to you. You must return in to Mr Washington.〞。
