The digital revolution is both launching us into a no-handwriting future, and also sending us backwards in time to when the spoken words ruled. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
“I don’t think kids should be assessed on their ability to master cursive(草书). It’s not something that they are going to use much in their lives as they grow older. It’s not something most of us adults use in our lives today. 〞 Anne Trubek, an author, suggests that schools offer handwriting or cursive as an elective or art class in the future.
“Focus on how to teach kids to express their ideas, how to organize their thoughts, how to make arguments〞 she says. “The forming of the letters are less
important. And there are certainly many ways to individualize what you write beyond the way you’ve circled the ‘I’ or crossed your ‘T’.〞
“This myth that handwriting is just a motor skill is just plain wrong,〞Virginia Berninger said. “We use motor parts of our brain, motor planning, motor control, but what’s very critical is a region of our brain where the visual and language come together and actually become letters and written words.〞“A lot of people ar e very stubborn about the importance of handwriting, but at the same time will admit they never write themselves,〞 Trubek says.
Trubek suggests, however, that handwriting keeps some value–for now. “ For us today, in the 21st century America, handwriting represents something individual and unique about a person. It doesn’t always mean that in previous times in history, and it won’t always mean that in the future, but right now for us we relate our sense of self to our handwriting. 〞
5.How does Trubek feel about the handwriting?
A. It’s meaningful.
B. It’s useless.
C.It’s less important.
D. It’s only an art.
6.Virginia Berninger’s attitude to the use of handwriting is ______.
A. favorable
B. disapproving
C. doubtful
D. ambiguous
7.What do we know from the last paragraph?
A. Handwriting reflects the past and the future.
B. Handwriting still keeps some value today.
C. The computer makes handwriting out of date.
D. Handwriting represents previous times in history.
8.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce something about handwriting.
B. To encourage people to practice handwriting
C. To discuss the importance of handwriting.
D. To show people’s worry about future.
C.
Does your local town have a nickname? If so, what does it say about the area and the people who live there? Many cities are recognized across the world by their unofficial titles. New York is the Big Apple, London is the Big Smoke, and Los Angles is famously called La La Land.
Now, as part of English Language Day on Wednesday, Britain’s national mapping agency, Ordnance Survey, and the British linguistics charity (语言学慈善机构), the English Project, are launching an interactive project which aims to identify the nicknames people use in their daily lives for local places.
“The name that people create for a place forms an emotional connection,〞explains Winchester University’s Professor Bill Lucas, a supporter of the English Project. “So Basingstoke becomes Amazingstoke, Swindon is known as Swindump and Padstow, hometown of Chef Rick Stein, is nicknamed Padstein.〞
Basingstoke is a town in central England. The local nickname, Amazingstoke, shows the affection that locals seem to have for the area. Swindon, on the other
hand, is sometimes called Swindump, showing that some people think it’s a dump (垃圾场). Stanford Le Hope in Essex is called Stanford No Hope by locals. And Padstow in Cornwall is so closely connected with the local famous person Rick Stein that it’s become known as Padstein.
Since launching the online survey last week, the creators have already received 3,000 alternative titles for places and landmarks.
There is a practical side to the project. Glen Hart, Ordnance Survey’s head of research, says the information could be very helpful to the emergency services. For example, “By having the most complete set of nicknames we could help the emergency services quickly locate the right place, and maybe even save lives.〞 he says.
9.What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Organizations collect official place names.
B. People have a great affection for their cities.
C. Some stories about nicknames for places.
D. A survey of the nickname for places.
10.Unlike the town Basingstoke, Swindon is a place that __________.
A. seems unpleasant to some people
B. has a long history
C.has few people living there
D. attracts a lot of tourists
11.According to the passage, people’s respond to the project is __________.

Birds have been observed to sleep while in flight for the first time ever. Because of some flights that can often last several days, weeks, or even longer, some sea birds have long been thought of being able to fall fully asleep while “on the wing〞, though it was not proven.
Now researchers say they have evidence which shows birds can sleep in flight. Scientists from Max Planck Institute used a sample of 15 adult female frigatebirds (HY舰鸟) to test the sleep patterns. Each bird had a small electroencephalogram (EEG脑电图) senso r fitted to record changes in the animals’ brain activity as they flew for up to 10 days and over 3,000 kilometres.
The readings showed that during flight the birds could sleep using one hemisphere of the brain, or both together. It was known that frigatebirds could sleep with one “half〞 of the brain, which allows them to k eep one eye open and “connected〞 to the awake half.
According to the research, it is sleeping technique used by birds for finding directions. “Frigatebirds sleep mostly while circling in rising air and keep the eye connected to the awake hemisphere facing the direction of flight, suggesting that they watch where they are going,〞 says the study.
Despite the ability to fall “fully〞 asleep, the birds were found to do it less
in the air compared to one land. They slept “very little and less deeply while in flight. This suggests that though it is possible, falling totally asleep is not very good during flight which will need the bird’s attention.
The researchers said the short sleep could be serving as “power naps〞 to keep the birds going until they return to land. Further study could help us understand why lack of sleep affects humans so badly.
13.The phrase “on the wing〞 in the first paragraph may mean __________.
A. thinking.
B. fighting.
C.flying.
D. sleeping.
14.Why did the researchers fit the frigatebirds with EEG sensors?
A. To help the birds fly much longer.
B. To use the birds to find directions.
C. To know animals’ brain activity.
D. To get some of the good samples.
15.How do the sleeping birds find the directions?
A. They have a good sleep before they start flying.
B. They pay special attention to the way.
C. They keep one eye connected to the awake part.
D. They sleep less when they are circling in rising air.
