When it comes to helping developing countries, we often think about offering money in order that they can build schools and hospitals, buy food and medicine, or find clean water supplies. These seem to be the most important basic needs in their lives. However, it's far from enough. We have to come up with better ideas.
A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer, which he decided to invent after he visited a school in Cambodia. The laptop which Mr. Negroponte has designed is not the same as the normal one that you can buy in the shops. One difference is that it will be covered in rubber so that it is strong and won't be damaged easily. As an electricity supply can be a problem in developing countries, the computer also has a special handle in order that children can wind the computer up to give it extra power just as easy as setting a clock.
This special laptop computer will cost less than 100 US dollars and Mr. Negroponte wants to produce as many as 15 million laptop computers in the first year. The idea is that these computers will help the children’s education as they will be able to access the Intern et. These computers might not benefit the people in developing countries immediately, but by improving children’s education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term.
Another idea to help children in developing countries is to recycle old mobile phones so that they can be used again in the UK and probably in many other countries too, millions of mobile phones are thrown away every year. The waste crested by throwing away these old phones is very bad for the environment, so it seems to be an excellent idea to achieve two important goals at the same time. We will reduce the waste we produce and help others, in other words, we will be able to “kill two birds
with one stone” and that is always a good thing.
8. The und erlined phrase “wind up” in paragraph 2 means .
A. 吹风
9. The laptop computer that Mr. Negroponte has designed .
A. will be damaged much easier than the normal one
B. has a special handle to access the Internet
C. is cheap and can run with extra power
D. can be helpful to find the people’s own solutions
10. Mr. Negroponte’s cheap computer is mentioned in the passage to .
A. illustrate the kindness of people in the developed countries
B. tell us what high technology can help people
C. show how to find business opportunities in developing countries
D. give an example of how to help developing countries
11. Which is the best idea the author gives us to help the developing countries?
A. We need to think about more ways to help people in developing countries, not just throw money at the problem.
B. We should spend much money helping people in developing countries build more schools and hospitals.
C. We should think about giving help to developing countries by giving them all we have.
D. We should help the people in developing countries by improving children's education immediately. B 9. C 10. D 11. A

We have to come up with better ideas.(我们必须提出更好的主意),接下来讲述了尼古拉斯·内格罗蓬特的人发明了一台廉价的笔记本电脑,这种帮助发展中国家更好的主意的例子。

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the advantage of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War Ⅱ. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their
children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.
12. The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because .
A. they lived healthily in a dirty environment.
B. they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay in
C. they believed disease could be spread in public baths
D. they considered bathing as the cause of skin disease
13. Which of the following best describes Henry IV’s attitude to bathing?
A. disapproving
B. Curious.
C. Approving.
D. Uninterested.
14. How does the passage mainly develop?
A. By providing examples.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By following the order of time.
D. By following the order of importance.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To stress the role of dirt.
B. To introduce the history of dirt.
C. To call attention to the danger of dirt.
D. To present the change of views on dirt. C 13. A 14. C 15. D

A 17. B 18. E 19. C 20. D
根据下文的句子all experts consider psychological preparation as the most important thing for students studying abroad to consider(所有专家认为心理准备是留学生应该考虑的最重要的事情),以及这段文字的小标题是“调整出国的心态”,A项与心态调整有关,故选A。
根据本段标题Be willing to communicate.及前文which makes it especially important to learn to develop relationships with people around them可知,一定要张开嘴乐于交流,可见本段主要写得是交流的问题,故选E。
Students should ask related teachers to help make plans consistent with their practical condition(学生应向相关教师请教,制定使其与实际情况相一致的计划),C项中learning plan 与后文的make plans呼应,故选C。
Foreign children are used to learning by themselves in or after class.
