March, 2013, the H7N9 virus (病毒) hit (袭击) Shanghai, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and so on. It seemed that most people who were infected (被感染) with H7N9 had the common flu (流感). Some people suffered from a fever or a cough.

And always cover your mouth and nose with a piece of paper when you sneeze or cough, and then clean your hands.
Wear a mask (口罩). Some doctors say that masks can stop the flu as much as 80%, but if you don't wash your hands often, it's no use wearing a mask. And it's necessary to wear the mask in the groups of people.

In modern society there is a lot of disagreement about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is good for social progress. Others say that competition is bad. It sets one person against another. And it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who believe that their self-worth depended on how well they did at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and death matters. In their single-minded dream of success, the development of many other human qualities (品质)is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire (渴望)to succeed, others take a different attitude. In a culture which values only the winners, they are strongly against competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who are under competitive pressures(压力)from their parents or society. They are always told to be the top ones, but they think it's really hard. When I teach these young people, I often find them in a desire to fail. They seem to search for failure (失败)by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse:" I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try. If I had tried and lost, that would mean a lot."
Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief. They think one's self-respect depends on how well one does compared with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this fear begins to dissolve(消除)can we discover a new meaning in competition,
(1)Why do some people welcome competition according to the passag?
A. It pushes society forward.
B. It improves one's abilities.
C. It develops human qualities.
D. It builds up friendly relationship.
(2)The underlined phrase "the most vocal" in Paragraph 3 means .
A. those who try their best to win
B. those who value competition most highly
C. those who depend on others most for success
D. those who are against competition most strongly
(3)Which of the following may the writer agree to?
A. Every effort should be paid back.
B. Competition should be encouraged.
C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.
D. Fear of failure should be taken away in competition.
(4)What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.
B. Competition is bad for social development.
C. Ideas about competition are different among people.
D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition.

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. The scientists said that these children were often bullied(欺负)by their older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(责备)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversations. And don't forget-if you are shy, you are not the only one.

This week is Computer Science Education Week. During the week, students around the world will be taking part in an "Hour of Code" and learning a little about programming computers. This year, there will be more than 200.000 events in over 180 countries.
The U.S. Congress first created Computer Science Education Week in 2009 to remember Grace Hopper, one of the women who played an important part in the early days of computers.
Hadi Partovi came up with the idea of the Hour of Code. He thinks coding is an important skill and that it's important for schools to teach computer science. He started the Hour of Code in 2013 because he was worried that computer science was not a big part of what schools taught in most states.
To spread his idea, he got the help from many famous people. Some were famous for working with computers, like Bill Gates. Others were famous in other areas. Mr. Partovi got a lot of money for his idea from big companies like Facebook. Google, and Microsoft.
Students who take part in the Hour of Code complete a short coding challenge that is broken down into small, simple steps. The challenge is supposed to take about an hour in all.
To raise the interest of students, the challenges are often tied in with popular movies or games. For example, challenges have been built around Angry Birds. Mine Craft. A seabird named Lydia recently made a 26-day nonstop (不间断的)journey of about 2,500 mi-les, just to search for food for her baby. She is fitted with a satellite tracking device (卫星跟踪仪). Her trip started on Oct. 18 from Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. The trip is known as the lon-gest nonstop journey by one of these endangered seabirds.
Before that, this kind of birds was known only to fly a few hundred miles from where they live, staying away for just a few days at a time. They usually fly over the sea.
The scientists feel it strange that Lydia made such a long, nonstop journey and flew overland. So the above facts raise some serious questions about efforts to stop the decline (减少)of the birds. The number of the birds has fallen by 10 percent over the past 20 years.
Besides, the scientists are surprised that she was away from her baby for such a long time. They wonder why she needed to go that far. Maybe it shows that fish resources (资源)around Christmas Island are not large enough now. That might explain the slow decline of the bird 一 sea pollution(污染) is serious.
(1)Why did Lydia make such a long and nonstop journey?
(2)How far does this kind of birds usually fly at a time?
(3)What do you know about the number of this kind of seabirds?
(4)What do the scientists think Lydia’s long journey may show?

Spring is a wonderful season to celebrate rebirth(再生) and new life. The long, cold winter is over. The weather is warmer and sunnier. The trees again have leaves and the flowers are blooming(开). The season represents(代表)hope, joy and beauty. At this time, many people think of this classical music piece —“Spring”, which shows happiness. Itali an composer (作曲家) Antonio Vivaldi wrote it in the seventeen hundreds.
However, not all songs about spring are happy. This song written and sung by K.D Lang is about dreaming of spring in cold dark places. She recorded “I Dream of Spring” in 2008.
Ri chard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein wrote “It Might as Well Be Spring” for the movie State Fair in 1945. Frank Sinatra sings it. It is a feeling of restlessness(焦虑) or excitement brought on by the coming of spring. Richard Rodgers also wrote “Spring Is Here”, this time with Lorenz Hart. Ella Fitzgerald sings this song about feeling lonely during this season.
Frank Loesser wrote the sad song, “Spring Will be a Little Late This Year”. Why has the season been delayed(延迟)? Because the singer's lover has left her. Sarah Vaughn released(发行)her version of the song in 1953.
By now you may be thinking, “Enough with the sad songs, already!” Ok, then how about a cowboy(牛仔)song? Gene Autry was one of America's most famous singing cowboys. He recorded “When It's Spring time in the Rockies” in 1937.
