China news, Nanjing, Nov. 14 --- “People who suffer from mental illness are able to draw. Actually, they can draw very well,〞 said Guo Haiping, a contemporary artist in Nanjing.

The other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday par ty. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30 pm. Jane went off wi th her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.
By 9:45, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeare d. Jane and David were restless. Other guests began whispering that they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case s ome food was about to appear. By 11:00, there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads. Jane and David left hungry and angry.
Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitati ons need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invi tations differently. Most of us would agree that 6:30 -8:30 pm means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards; 8:00 pm or 8:30 pm means possible dinner, but 9:30 pm and any time thereafter means no food, eat beforehand, roll up late.
But this is not always the case. If asked to a students’ party at 6:30 pm, it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight, i f at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive ---looking eag er ---is social death. When my mother is asked to a party at 6:30, s he likes to be there, if not on time, then no later than seven. My a ge group (late thirties) falls somewhere between the two, but becaus e we still think we’re young, we’re probably closer to student-tim e than grown-up time.
The accepted custom at present is confusing, sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every p arty that precious element of surprise.
63. The underlined words “off their heads〞 probably mean ________.
A. tired
B. craz
y C. curiou
s D. hopeless
64. Jane and David’s story is used to show that ________.
A. party invitations can be confusing
B. party-goers usually get hungry at parties
C. people should ask for food at parties
D. birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull
65. For some young people, arriving on time for a students’ party w
ill probably be considered _______.
A. very difficult
B. parti cularly thoughtful
C. friendly and polit
e D. socially unacceptable
66. What is the general idea of the text?
A. It’s safe to arrive late just when food is served.
B. It’s wise to eat something before going to a party.
C. It’s important to follow social rules of party-going.
D. It’s necessary to read invitations carefully.

ATLANTA, Georgia--- Alternative medicine --- including yoga, med itation, herbs〔草药(cǎoyào)〕and the Atkins diet〔艾特金斯饮食法〕---appears to be growing in popularity in the United States, perhaps b ecause of dissatisfaction with conventional〔传统的〕care, the gover nment said Thursday.
More than a third of American adults used such practices in 202 1, according to the government survey of 31,000 people, the largest study on non-conventional medical approaches in the United States. I f prayer is included, about 62 percent of U. S. adults used some for m of alternative medicine.
The results seem to indicate more people are turning to alternat ive medicine, though the 2021 survey could not be directly compared to previous studies because of differences in size and survey method s, health officials said.
The top alternative therapies〔疗法(liáo fǎ)〕included prayer (43 percent of adults) , natural products〔19 percent〕, meditation〔8 p ercent〕and diets such as Atkins, Ornish, or the Zone 〔4 percent〕. More people also are using natural products such as herbs or enzyme s〔酶〕to treat chronic or recurring pain〔慢性或者经常性疼痛〕, sai d Richard Nahin of the National Center for Complementary and Alterna tive Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health.
“Many conditions are not easily treated with conventional medic ine,〞Nahin said. “It may be the public that is turning to complem entary〔补充的〕and alternative medicine because it’s not getting r elief from conventional medicine.〞
But people should not be turning away from conventional treatmen ts that are proven safe, said Dr. Stephen Straus, director of the al ternative medicine center.
“People are making individual decisions to neglect those therap ies and we have concerns about those choices,〞 he said.
Health officials said they were concerned that 13 percent of tho se surveyed said they turned to alternative medicine because regular medicine is too expensive.
“It needs to be explored ---we need to find out whether they we re insured or not〞 Nahin said.
Health officials also were surprised that 6.6 percent of those s urveyed used the supplement kava kava〔卡瓦提取物〕, which has been associated with liver disease.
“People make the assumption that because something is natural t hat it’s safe〞Nahin said. “But a nu mber of studies have shown th at natural products can be unsafe when used inappropriately or with other drugs.〞
He said people considering using alternative medicine should con sult their doctor first.

第五局部(júbù)任务型阅读 (一共10小题;每一小题1分,满分是10分)
请认真阅读以下短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格的空格处里填人最恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格填1个单词。
There are good reasons to cherish our friendships. Some years ag o a public-opinion research firm, Roper Starch Worldwide, asked 2021 people to identify one or two things that said the most about thems elves. Friends far outranked homes, jobs, clothes and cars.
“Ironically,〞 says Brant R. Burleson, professor of communicati on at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., “the better f riend s you are, the more likely you’ll face conflicts.〞 And the outcome can be what you don’t want ---an end to the relationship.
The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended.
Swallow your pride. It wasn’t easy, but that’s what Denise Mor eland of Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii did when a friendship turne d sour. For nearly four months, Moreland, 45, had watched over Nora Huizenga’s two young daughters, who were living with their father o n the base, while Huizenga, 40, completed training as a dental hygie nist in Nevada. “I felt honored to be asked to step in,〞 Moreland says.
When Huizenga returned at Christmas, Moreland recalls, “I had s o much to tell her, but she never called.〞
One daughter had a birthday party, but Moreland wasn’t invited.“I felt like I’d been used,〞 she says.
At first, Moreland swore to avoid Huizenga. Then she decided to swallow her pride and let her friend know how she felt. Huizenga adm itted that she’d been so worried about being separated from her fam ily that she’d be en blind to what her friend had done to help her. Today she says, “I would never have figured out what happened if De nise hadn’t called me on it.〞
When a friend hurts you, your instinct is to protect yourself. B ut that makes it harder to solve problems, explains William Wilmot, author of Relational Communication. “Most of us are relieved when d ifferences are brought out in the open.〞
Apologize when you’re wrong ---even if you’ve also been wronge d. But over the course of a friendship, even the best people make mi stakes. “We don’t think clearly when we’re arguing,〞 says Michae l Lang, a professional mediator in Pittsburgh. Instead, says Lang, a sk: “What’s going on? This doesn’t make sense.〞
See things from your friend’s point of view. Sociologists Rebec ca Adams Rosemary and Blieszner interviewed 53 adults who each had m any friendships lasting decades. “We were curious how these people managed to sustain strong friendships for so long,〞 says Blieszner. Tolerance is key, the researchers learned.〞It’s surp rising how o ften a dispute results from a simple misunderstanding,〞 adds psycho therapist Anne Frenkel.
Accept that friendships change. “Friendships change as our need s and lifestyles change,〞 Wilmot observes.
Making friends can sometimes seem easy, says Yager. The hard par t is keeping the connections strong during the natural ups and down s that affect all relationships. Her suggestion: Consider friendship an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and nurture.

Good afternoon, everyone! In order to make our school life more colorful, the Student Union has decided to set up a Cycling Club.
Our Cycling Club will have a wide range of activities for member s. We have basic training once a week, which will be instructed by t eachers. It will be arranged during the time of after-class physical activities. There will also be an outdoor cycling trip at the last weekend of each month. And we will have some races with other teams if possible.
We are sure it will be an ideal place for you to make more frien ds, to experience the excitement of discovery, and to keep fit. Besi des, if you are suffering the stress from study, it will be a great chance to relax yourself.
So, if you are interested in our club, just call us at 051385550 055, or you can come to our club in Room 602, on the sixth floor, Bu ilding 5. By the way, you have to get the equipment ready by yoursel f, but the charge is free.。
