阅读理解:
A
At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I approached the light, it turned red and I braked a halt. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestions of headlights, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction. I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being arrested, because there was obviously no cop around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.
Much later that night, after I’d met with a group in Lewisburg and had climbed into bed near midnight, the question of why I’d stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it’s part of a contract we all have with each other. It’s not only the law, but it’s an arrangement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don’t go through red lights. Like most of us, I’m more apt(善于……的)to be restrained from doing something bad by the social convention that disapproves of it than by any law against it.
It’s amazing that we ever trust each other to do the right thing, isn’t it? And we do, too. Trust is our first tendency. We have to make a deliberate(蓄意的)decision to mistrust someone or to be suspicious or skeptical (疑心的). Those attitudes don’t come naturally to us.
It’s a damn good thing too, because the whole structure of our society depends on mutual trust, not distrust. This whole thing we have gone for us would fall apart if we didn’t trust each other most of the time.
1. The writer first wanted to run the red light because______.
A. the traffic light turned red
B. there was no suggestions of headlights
C. he was not afraid of being arrested
D. there certainly was no sign of danger
2. After the writer went to bed, ________.
A. he regretted going out driving a car at midnight that day
B. he thought owing to the law he did not run the light
C. he believed the public should trust each other to honor the arrangements
D. he realized that he had an contract with the traffic company before
3. The sentence “T rust is our first tendency.〞means_______ .
A. trust is a kind of born nature
B. trust is needed badly in society
C. our first need is trust in society
D. we should not doubt each other
4. The writer really wanted to tell the readers_______.
A. he was unlucky to have met the red light one night along the road
B. the value of trust in the successful structure of our society
C. if there was no sign of danger the driver could run the red light
D. contract didn’t need trust while arrangements called for it
【试题答案】
书面表达:
1.
Dear Li Ming,
I greatly regret to say that I will unable to attend your birthday party this Saturday evening. It happens that very day I am to be arranged by the school to meet a principal from Canada with some other classmates. In the evening I have to take part in the activities held by our school to welcome him. As I have been eager to have a further study in Canada, I hope to have an informal talk about the possibility and opportunities to study there as a Chinese student. I hope you can understand. Nevertheless, thank you very much for your kind invitation.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Lin
2.
We Should Be Honest
As we all know, honesty is very important and it is a virtue of the people in society. But recently some students have formed the bad habits of telling lies to the teacher when they broke the rules of the school, or they try to find excuses for their faults. Some even have cheated in the exams while they have not studied hard. What’s worse, some students have made up some stories to make their parents believe that they need money for their study. In fact they just wasted it, and so on.
Above all, we should get into good habits from childhood, and then we can become useful persons to the society. All of us should be responsible for our relatives, our friends, and our society.
