第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Melbourne, Australia
Melbourne is a hotspot travel destination, and it’s easy to see its beautiful beaches and busy city life.
Why it’s a gr eat choice: Australia as a whole is considered a safe destination for international travel, and because of that, many solo travelers go there. As an English-speaking country, you won’t be faced with any language barriers. Melbourne is easy to get around because you can walk or bike practically anywhere!
Thailand
Thailand is great for solo travelers —perhaps because it is one of the Buddhist mindsets, which promote equality among the sexes.
Why it’s a great choice: Thailand is known for its friendly atmosph ere, and as a travel hotspot, there are plenty of chances to meet other like-minded travelers. Well known for being very cheap, especially in the north. A good choice if you want to get away on a budget. Thailand has a lot to offer, from the party- central Bangkok to beautiful beaches and tropical (热带的) jungle.
Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong is a great place to relax for solo travelers as it is full of “Zen Moments”, such as b eautiful gardens and Tai Chi classes.
Why it’s a great choice: Hong Kong is regarded as one of the safest cities in the world. If you’re not well traveled, or perhaps a bit tired of things like language barriers, Hong Kong is a great place to start, as it mixes both Eastern and Western
at the same time.
Bali, Indonesia
Bali is a spiritual place with yoga, spas, healthy food and beaches. The combination of friendly people and splendid visual culture has made Bali number one tourist attraction.
Why it’s so great: you won’t be the only solo traveler in Bali. Everyone is known for being extremely friendly and you’re sure to meet some ama zing characters along the way. As a Hindu island, Bali is the perfect place for a relaxing and spiritual retreat (静修). The Sacred Monkey Foresting Ubud is fantastic 一 if you like monkeys, anyway.

I log onto a computer at the doctor’s office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room.
There, a robotic nurse directs me onto a device and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later, in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms
and gives me a prescription (处方). I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having met another human being.
When I call my dentist’s office and actually get a human being on the line, I am thrilled. And when I see the introduction of yet more self-service checkout stations at the grocery store, I feel like shouting, “When it comes to cashiers, make mine human, please!”
After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon (优惠券) for items you are buying. Even more than that, real-life cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother’s day. A cashier may also show compassion (同情) for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse.
What technological devi ce would do any of this? I don’t want to go back to the Stone Age, but I’m also worried about a world run by machines. Sometimes when you’re chatting with someone, you discover things you need to know. Maybe a receptionist needs prayers said for a sick child. Maybe a salesperson can offer a bit of encouragement to a customer who is feeling tired.
Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine. But they lack an element so important to everyday life.
Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart. It is something no machine will ever have. It is being human that prompts us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment.
1. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first two paragraphs?
A. To indicate high technology can make our future life very easy.
B. To describe a possible future scene where robots take control of our life.
C. To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors.
D. To predict how technology can affect the way we see a doctoring the future.
2. Why does the author prefer being served by humans rather than by robots?
A. Robots are indifferent and emotionless.
B. Robots can’t provide efficient services.
C. Robots don’t offer to give store coupons.
D. Robots are unable to do a job as well as humans.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards machines?
A. He wishes one day they would come to life.
B. He is absolutely against their existence in his life.
C. He doesn’t like they get involved in his life too much.
D. He is afraid they would take the place of human beings.
C
Are you content with the shape of your nose? If not, the climate may be to blame, not your parents.
This is according to a recent study carried out by scientists from Pennsylvania State University, US. They found that climate played a key role in shaping our noses. The findings were based on an examination of the size and shape of noses of 476 people from four regions---West Africa, East Asia, South Asia and Northern Europe, using 3-D facial imaging technology.
“Peopl e have thought for a long time the difference in nose shape among humans across the world may have arisen as a result of natural selection because of climate,” Arslan Zaidi, one of the lead authors of the study, told The Guardian. But while previous studies were based on measurements from human skulls, Zaidi and his team looked at nose shape itself.
The result showed that wider noses are more common in warm and humid climates, while narrower noses are more common in cold and dry climates. That, Zaidi said, could be because narrower nasal passages help to increase the moisture (潮湿) content of air and warm it,which is easier on our lungs. This, in turn, led to a gradual decrease in nose width in populations living far away from the equator.
More study is still needed to test the link between climate and nose shape, but Zaidi believes the current findings are valuable in understanding potential health issue. “As we become more of a global community, we are going to come across climates that we are not adapt to,”he told the Guardian. This means moving to a very different climate might increase the risk of breathing problems.
However, he added, “This may not be necessarily true for various reasons such
as of modern medicine and the fact that our current climate is very different from what it used to be.”
28. From the passage we know most people from Singapore have ________ noses.
A. wider
B. narrower
C. smaller
D. larger
29. Narrower noses are helpful to ________.
A. cool the air
B. warm the air
C. take in more oxygen
D. dry the air
30. What can be learned about the study?
A. Zaidi’s team measured human skull using 3-D technology.
B. Shapes of our noses are determined by our parents.
C. Nose shape helps people adapt to the environment.
D. It’s certain that p eople will suffer from more breathing problems.
31. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. What factors shape noses?
B. How to make your nose attractive?
C. Nose shapes cause breathing problems
D. Climate shapes noses
D
Robot Surgeon (外科医生) Succeeds without Help from Human Doctors Humans make mistakes. Even surgeons with years of experience are not infallible. But what if these doctors could pool their knowledge and experience together and create a surgical standard of care, to be carried out by machines?
That’s the idea behind surgical robots, which may soon perform most surgeries, from sewing up tiny wounds to performing heart procedures. Many of these operations are, in fact, already completed with the assistance of robots. But a recent test suggests that robots in the operating room may soon go a step further, performing on soft tissue completely on their own, from start to finish.
The Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot (STAR), successfully completed surgeries on pigs. “We're the first group to develop autonomous robotic surgery with soft﹣tissue surgery, and when compared to standard operation, it's better, "says Peter Kim, professor of surgery.”The idea is not to replace surgeons; it will make the surgeons
better and make the procedures safer.”
A recent Mayo Clinic study found that major surgical errors﹣including operating on the wrong site or side of the body, or even leaving tools or objects inside the patient﹣occur every one out of 22, 000procedures. That's rare, but robots like STAR would aim to lower the number even further.
In the da Vinci surgical system, surgeons place their arms inside instruments and use their hands to control the movement of robotic tools on the operating table from afar. The robot's every major move is controlled by surgeons, and thus its results may vary based on the surgeon's training or experience.
STAR, on the other hand, is entirely autonomous. It's not only able to work on its own and perform surgeries with a more flexible “hand”, but it's able to react to the unexpected incidents. Cutting into hard tissue like bones is one thing, but operating on moving soft tissue is far more complex. STAR reacts to a changing environment, similar to how self﹣driving cars are programmed to not only drive on the highway, but also react to another driver making a mistake and getting in your way.
32. The underlined word “infallible” in Paragraph 1probably means ________.
A. always right
B. really creative
C. rather responsible
D. quite smart
33. We can learn from the passage that STAR ________.
A. has been widely used in the operating room
B. can perform the operation on its own
C. can make surgeries much faster
D. will take the place of surgeons
34. In the da Vinci surgical system, ________.
A. robots are trained from afar
B. surgery results depend on surgeons
C. robots always make mistakes
D. surgeons have trouble controlling robots
35. In the last paragraph, the author mentions self﹣driving cars in order to show ________.
A. how bad getting in another driver's way might be
B. how difficult self﹣driving on the highway is
C. how smart an autonomous robot can be
D. how dangerous operating on people is.

Caroline Solomon was on her high school’s swim team. But at times she could not go into the creek(溪流)near her home. It was simply too polluted. “I decided I wanted to do something about it,” she recalls. So she studied environmental science and public policy at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. Later, she went to graduate school. Some of her classes could be challenging, though, since she couldn’t hear. her teachers. “I’ve been deaf since I was 15 months old,” Solomon notes.
Today she teaches biology at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. She has no trouble communicating with her students. They, too, are primarily deaf or hard of hearing. That’s why all classes at Gallaudet are taught in American Sign Language. Solomon also has an active life outside the classroom. She especially enjoys hiking, biking and other activities with her family.
Her research takes her to the Anacostia River. “It is very close to Gallaudet, and I easily bring my students there,” she says. Water running through local forests and marshes drains into this river. So does water running off urban streets, golf courses and industrial sites. “The river’s watershed(集水区)kind of concentrates all the things that happen when humans mess with the natural landscape,” she explains.
