Oliver Twist is about a boy named Oliver Twist, who escapes from an orphanage (孤儿 院) and meets a gang of pickpockets (扒手) in London. The novel is one of Dickens’s most well-known works, and has been the subject of numerous film and television adaptations (改编).

Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
Charles Dickens is one of England’s most famous novelists. He described life in the middle of the 19th century, a period that is now called Victorian, as it is when Queen Victoria ruled Britain. Many of Dickens’ novels take place in London. His popular works are: David Copperfield, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, and Our Mutual Friend.

Get to know the two authors. Get to know the works of the two authors. Talk about some of the great books you’ve read. Think about the impact literary classics have had on your life.
It’s Dickens’s most popular novels and was his own “favorite child.” The work is semiautobiographical, Dickens related early personal experiences that had meant much to him—his work in a factory, his schooling and reading, and his emergence from parliamentary (议会的) reporting into successful novel writing.
The novel is about a young Latina woman coming of age in Chicago, has sold more than two million copies. Cisneros has received numerous awards for her work, including the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship and the Texas Medal of the Arts. She lives in San Antonio, Texas.

Literature: written artistic works, particularly those with a high and lasting artistic value. Literature is the art that uses language as a medium.
The House on Mango Street
It is comprised of 44 short character sketches, or stories, called vignettes. They are narrated by Esperanza, who just moved with her family to Mango Street, in the barrio. Esperanza hates their house on Mango Street because it is not a “real” house, like the ones she’s seen on TV.
You can never have too much sky. You can fall
asleep and wake up drunk on sky, and sky
can keep you safe when you are sad. Here
there is too much sadness and not enough sky.
Dickens’ works
David Copperfield goes from a happy home until his mother marries again. He’s sent to school. When his mother dies, he runs away to his aunt, who sends him to another. He makes more friends and falls in love, but hard times goes. His aunt and his friends lose their money to a fraud (诈骗). His nanny Peggotty’s family, whom David has loved, is also in trouble. David’s wife dies as well. In the end, everything is resolved. The money is returned; Peggotty’s family sets out on a new adventure; David remarries, to his friend Agnes, and begins his new career as a writer.

Which of the excerpts makes you feel like reading the whole book? Why? The second excerpt makes me feel like reading the whole book because I think the language the author uses is simple but beautiful. I particularly like her description of the sky keeping us safe when we are sad.
