Unit 2 After school
Lesson 3 Language in use
教学目标:
1. 能够运用情态动词can / can’t表达能力和能否做某事。
2. 能够运用一般现在时态和一般过去时态承接语言练习。
3. 能够用one, ones代替可数名词和不可数名词中的名词,运用数量短语few, a few, little, a little描述物品的数量、程度以及性质。
教学重点:
1. 能够运用情态动词can / can’t表达能力和能否做某事。
2. 能够运用一般现在时态和一般过去时态承接语言练习。
3. 能够用one, ones代替可数名词和不可数名词中的名词,运用数量短语few, a few, little, a little描述物品的数量、程度以及性质。

PPT、录音机、练习册
教学过程:
Step 1 Warm-up
1. Greetings
T: Good morning, class.
Ss: Good morning, Miss/Mr.
2. Revision
(1) Check homework: Get some students to read out their dialogues in Exercise 2 on page 15.
(2) Ask some students to say what they can and can't do. Encourage them to use the following sentence patterns:
I can/can’t play football. Can you play football?
Yes, I can./ No, I can’t.
Step 2 Presentation
1. Before playing the recording, ask the students in what situations we use can and can’t.
T: When do we use can and can’t?
S1: We use can and can’t to talk about what we are
able or unable to do.
S2: We use can and can’t to ask for permission to do something.
2. Play the recording for the Conversation Part in Language in use, and ask students to follow it in their books.
3. Play the recording again, this time ask students to answer the questions using the prompts.
4. Explain the language points.
5. Encourage some of the students to say what they can and can’t do.
Step 3 Practice
1. Form pairs and ask them to work together.
2. Write a list of ten activities on the blackboard or on a piece of paper and ask the students to make up conversation using can and can't.
T: You are going to work with your partner to make up conversations using can and can't. Use these prompts (point to the blackboard or the piece of paper). You have three minutes to prepare.
3. Ask volunteers in the class to present their conversations to the other students.
Step 4 Presentation
1. Ask the students how to ask about the quantity of an object in English.
T: How do we ask about the quantity of an object in English?
S1: How many --- are there?
S2: How much --- is there?
2. Ask the students what to use instead of the nouns.
T: What do we use instead of the nouns?
S1: We use one or ones.
S2: For countable nouns, we use one or ones.
S3: For uncountable nouns, we use one.
3. Explain the four kinds of quantity words and write them on the blackboard: few; a few; little; a little.
4. Give an example in Chinese for each kind of quantity words and explain their meanings in English.
(1) few: 很少、没有多少。
表示“几乎没有”。
(2) a few: 一些、几个。
表示“至少有一些”。
(3) little: 很少、没有多少。
表示“几乎没有”。
(4) a little: 一点、有一些。
表示“至少有一点”。
Step 5 Practice
1. Working individually, the students complete the exercises in the Language practice. They listen and match.
2. Check the answers with the class.
3. Students work in pairs and ask each other questions about quantities.
Step 6 Summary
1. Demonstrate the use of the modal auxiliary verbs can and can't, and teach the new words few; a few; little; a little.
2. When students talk about the quantity of an object in English, it is important to use the proper word instead of nouns.
3. As students become more comfortable with these concepts, they can try to apply them in more complex situations.
Step 7 Homework
Write a short paragraph about your free time activities or your last weekend, and use the past tense form of the verbs.
