Two NASA astronauts returned to Earth on Sunday, with their capsule getting into the Gulf of Mexico to close out a test flight by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company.
It was the first water landing by U.S. astronauts in 45 years, with the first commercially built and operated spacecraft to carry people to and from space. The return clears the way for another Space flight as early as next month and possible tourist flights next year.
Test pilots Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken arrived back on Earth in their SpaceX Dragon capsule named Endeavour. The capsule got into the calm waters about 40 miles off the coast of Pensacola.
“It’s a little bit hard to take to seeing everybody here considering the things that have gone on the last few months since we’ve been off the planet,” Hurley said after arriving back home in Houston on Sunday evening where they were greeted by a small group of family and officials, including Musk. Musk had rushed to Houston from SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, to welcome them.
The astronauts’ ride back to Earth was fast and hot, at least on the outside. The spacecraft went from a speed of 17, 500 mph to 350 mph, and finally to 15 mph at landing. Highest heating was 3, 500 degrees Fahrenheit. The expected top G forces felt by the astronauts were four to five times the force of Earth’s gravity.
Within a half-hour of the water landing, the 16-foot capsule was pulled onto a recovery ship with a staff of more than 40, including doctors and nurses. The opening of the capsule was held up for half an hour by extra checks for dangerous rocket gases outside the capsule. After medical checkups, the astronauts took a plane to Pensacola and then to Houston.
24.How was SpaceX’s flight this time special?
A. It landed in water.
B. It carried some tourists.
C. It was organized by NASA.
D. It was sent into space from Mexico.
25.What did Elon Musk do?
A. He phoned the astronauts’ family.
B. He greeted the astronauts in person.
C. He waited in Houston for many days.
D. He welcomed the astronauts in California.
26.What do we know about the return flight?
A. The astronauts felt different speed.
B. The astronauts had to swim out of water.
C. The astronauts experienced the low temperature.
D. The astronauts felt six times the G forces of Earth’s gravity.
27.What would the astronauts do after the landing?
A. Get physical checkups.
B. Be sent to the hospital.
C. Help pull the capsule onto a ship.
D. Take a plane to Pensacola immediately.
C
Across the world, language and history are connected. As society and tradition change, new words or phrases are created to show the present cultural understanding. Some old phrases and words simply turn into the accepted usages with their backgrounds forgotten.
One such phrase “grandfathered in” has become a common one now. Although it often makes people think of the image of a gray-haired, older gentleman, who gets out of trouble because of his age, it actually means that one person or a business has the right to refuse the new rules.
A deeper look into the first use of the phrase shows an interesting story in history. It happened in a town in the 1890s. A new law was passed there not to allow illiterates to
participate in the making of rules as they couldn’t read or write and might not help in the
percent of young adults in the town who had little or no education. Being strong and active, they made up an important part of the town’s development.
Considering that, some officers in the town didn’t readily accept the rule. Instead, they carefully gave their advice to the head of the town. At the same time, they encouraged these young adults to pass the literacy (读写能力) tests. Thus a “grandfather clause (条款)” was added to allow illiterates to participate as long as they or their grandfathers had once been participants. The clause no doubt helped remove the unfairness and benefited all.
The phrase “grandfathered in” is of course still widely used today without being limited to a certain field. But even as culture and tradition change, whether we’re aware of it or not, language has the power to hold our history.
28.The phrase “grandfathered in” is used nowadays when __________.
A. an old man dislikes new rules.
B. a person is free from new rules
C. a business has a long history and culture
D. a businessman fails to follow the market
29.What does the underlined word “potent” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Easy.
B. Useless.
C. Powerful.
D. Reasonable.
30.What does the author think of the “grandfather clause” in the story?
A. Funny.
B. Incorrect.
C. Positive.
D. Disappointing.
31.What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Language and history are always connected.
B. The birth of some phrases can be interesting.
C. History plays an important role in communication.
D. Some phrases are created to show the present culture.
D
While looking at an airplane passing thousands of feet overhead, or when you are just about to get on a flight at the airport, have you ever noticed that the vast majority of airplanes are white? Sure, some have decorations and names in different colors, but the basic color behind those add-ons is almost always white. It seems a bit strange, but is there a real reason for it?
The color white is a good reflector of sunlight and reflects almost all the light that falls on it. If the airplane is in a color other than white, it will absorb sunlight and heat up the body of the airplane, which is something airplane companies want to avoid. It’s just like white clothes are suggested for summers. White reflects sunlight and avoids the gradual build-up of heat on the plane. This is a good thing, not only when the airplane is in flight but also when it’s parked on the runway.
A white plane is easier to be noticed in the event of a crash or any other accident, especially at night, or in a big sea. Additionally, airplanes are regularly checked for cracks and any other form of surface damage (for obvious safety reasons). Nothing works better than white when it comes to finding a crack on the surface.
Painting an airplane requires a considerable investment, in terms of money, manpower and time. And white doesn’t fade. A white-colored plane doesn’t appear significantly different, even after spending a considerable amount of time in the bad weather. Therefore, a white airplane is expected to cost a little more than a colored airplane if it is resold.
So, next time someone asks you why airplanes are white, tell them that it doesn’t just have scientific advantages. As it says, white goes with everything, right?
32.According to the author, white can reflect sunlight so as to ___________.
A. reduce the burning of oil
B. make passengers feel calm
C. get airplanes to move smoothly
D. keep airplanes from overheating
33.What is the advantage of white for airplanes mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. It is easy to clean after accidents.
B. It prevents pollution to the environment.
C. It makes decorations on airplanes obvious.
D. It brings safety benefits for being eye-catching.
34.What can be inferred about white airplanes from Paragraph 4?
A. They sell much better.
B. They can keep their color longer.
C. It is a difficult task to paint them.
D. It is easy to fly them even in bad weather.
35.What does the text want to tell us?
A. Rules of painting airplanes.
B. Ways to design good airplanes.
C. Challenges for white airplanes.
D. Reasons for painting airplanes white.
